  1. That's what I like to hear! Congrats on being accepted!! Combined with Chicago & Toronto you're having an incredible cycle!
  2. Wow! Congrats!!!
  3. Good luck!
  4. Coming to vent about UCLA. After naïvely generating some false hope when I did not receive a rejection with the others today, it turns out the UC system has huge problems funding internationals, and UCLA is only able to fund one international student this year. So: we pay more than other applicants to be considered and then are not even considered on an equal footing. I know this is true for many Canadian schools too and that I'm not alone in this frustration, but it's frustrating nonetheless. UCLA would be an almost perfect fit and I was already admitted to their JD program last month. Kind of whish I had done more research on international student funding before applying now. OK, I will go eat a piece of my rejection cake now (lol, baked it yesterday, beats cookies ).
  5. I called them back after missing a call around 12:15 today. They said I should also have received an email but I've still not gotten that message, so don't lose hope if you haven't heard yet!
  6. Ah, of course, thanks! Well that's frustrating.
  7. That's disappointing, was just getting a sliver of hope after not receiving a rejection. Maybe this just reveals my ignorance of the system, but why do international students cost more than out of state Americans to fund?
  8. Only one international? Dang :(. I wonder why?
  9. Wow congrats!! Reallllly hope I'm next in line, lol
  10. I see there's some UCLA posts on the board - anybody able to claim the one acceptance? EDIT: Nvm, the acceptance was claimed in the contacting admissions thread.
  11. Thanks a lot for letting us know! That's the clearest indication of what's going on at UCLA we've had so far.. I guess at least hope is not entirely lost yet!
  12. I'm in the same boat - have you been accepted to any good, PGR Ph.D. programs? Ph.D. admissions are extremely unpredictable...If you've got something now I'm not so sure it's for the best to give it up in favor of Stanford Law. After all, if you get into top law programs now, you're virtually certain to get in after doing the PhD - but there's definitely no such guarantee the other way around: to the contrary. Less importantly, but still a consideration: you will probably not need to borrow anything for the Ph.D., but you'll likely need to borrow at least something for the JD, since stipends in a T14 are basically out of the question. If you do the JD first and then apply to the PhD later, this means you'll be stuck with that loan for a longer duration and without being able to find employment to make payments (since you'll still be doing the PhD). If, on the other hand, you finish the Ph.D. first, you'll be ready for the job market directly after the JD. So, if you decide to do one degree before the other, it seems to me you are financially better off doing the Ph.D. first. Of course, you could apply to Stanford Phil again - should you get rejected this time around - next cycle. Yet, no matter how strong your application, statistically your odds of admission would remain very slim, since the number of qualified applicants really does greatly outweigh the available spots in the program. So, going to SLS and hoping for a PhD admission next round seems risky to me. This, at least, represents some of my own thinking in the likely case that I do not get into the JD/PhD programs to which I applied. In any case: do you plan to find work in philosophy or law? Your acceptance to Georgetown - particularly its JD/PhD, to which I have no doubt you'll be accepted given your admission to SLS - should already take you quite far in either field, it seems to me, but will surely provide you with excellent credentials in the latter.
  13. Not sure about this but note that fellowship nominees are almost always notified ahead of other admits, so there is definitely no reason to presume rejection yet! Also: Michigan is on the board...anybody able to claim it?
  14. That's awesome, congrats!! Sounds like you have a very enviable choice to make . As to your question: this depends very heavily on your areas of interest and the people you'd like to work with, especially since their general ranking is identical. What area of philosophy would you like most to work in? Also, the fact that Austin is providing you with a fellowship is worth some consideration too - it will presumably allow you some more financial freedom and time to do academic work.
  15. For you people waiting on UC-Riverside - it looks like there's a post up on the board! Not sure if it's genuine, since it's a Sunday afternoon, but you never know. Admissions committees, after all, work in mysterious ways.
  16. Thanks! And - I'm in I think I have the same music for the Rhapsody and it's great! I'm glad to hear!
  17. @DontGetMeSartred @bechkafish It sounds like I may be in for an unpleasant surprise going into my grad program. Having for long been surrounded by students who had very little interest in philosophy I was kind of hoping for a more congenial atmosphere - among others with a similar passion for philosophy. I didn't realize the competitiveness would be so strong/negative even within one's own department. On the other hand, I presume the same observations about the unpleasant importance of pedigree, rankings, and so forth would hold true for most humanities departments if not for academia in general. On a brighter note, @bechkafish I noticed you updated your signature: glad to meet another philosopher-pianist!
  18. I think I've posted this elsewhere already, but I've declined my Illinois-Urbana offer and withdrawn my application to NIU's MA program. I'm afraid I don't have any more to offer at the moment! @torpedofish Declined Cornell and Notre Dame! I wish you would've sent me one of those admits
  19. I don't have the stomach to watch any Republicans on TV anymore, lol. I used to watch every debate on both sides: but I can't deal with the fifty shades of insanity into which the Republican race has descended On the bright side: this election has got to be an easy win for the Democrats
  20. I daresay this applies to all admissions generally! Our philosophy departments are analogous to Das Schloss
  21. Dutch pronunciation is tricky, lol. I very rarely hear anyone say anything correctly (poor, poor Van Gogh!), so do not worry I forgot to say the v is just a v sound btw, not an f. Sometimes it's simpler than you think Good luck on the presentation!!
  22. Not a JH admit , but Dutch does happen to be my native language. Gughok is right about the r sound, but keep in mind the s in de Vries is not silent, nor pronounced as a z, but rather like the 's' in 'snake'. Hope that helps
  23. Okay, Bernie. I'm all for a political revolution. But: please don't keep e-mailing me about it while I'm waiting for grad school admissions
  24. Just got the official rejection from Harvard. Also presumably rejected from Cornell, Notre Dame & Yale. Inevitable but no less disappointing... Had especially held out a little hope for ND since a POI told me my sample was "excellent" and that I should apply with confidence.
