  1. Hey @jacbarcan - is there any reason in particular you picked today for Michigan? I looked through the results page and it looks like they released March the last two years, right?
  2. First of all, thanks for the smile . I could use it: when I just got a call from Notre Dame's area code and, excitedly answering it, was greeted by a telemarketer, I realllly wanted to violently defenestrate my phone. And probably some classmates as well. Honestly, I still might. Second of all, do not allow the protracted suffering of this process to make you lose faith in the strength of your abilities. I haven't read it yet (hint) but your writing sample looks fascinating - and so does your MA thesis, for that matter. And don't be embarrassed about your undergrad - lol, mine employs a total of one professional philosophers. When I fly into the US and tell customs where I'm studying they respond that that school doesn't exist (this has seriously happened twice, I had to show them the website). I know we philosophers excel at talking ourselves down, but take a page out of Wagner/Schopenhauer's (considerably large) books and have some self-confidence. I'm rooting for you to get into Columbia. Also, I just started The World as Will and Representation: I paused in the second preface to respond to you but loved his suggestion to those who, disliking all his demands, don't want to read his book, to review it instead :D.
  3. Hang in there! You still have more than half of your applications open and you seem to have a really impressive application... The unpredictability of this process makes it really cruel - but it also means the first responses you get are in no way predictive or representative of the others. Don't lose hope!
  4. Congrats!! What opera were you attending?
  5. Do you guys think Notre Dame is finished yet? I only see 5 posts today (they said they'd admit 15-20) but the other one's might just not be on here?
  6. That's awesome, congrats!! Was it a personalized message or a generic one?
  7. I really hope you're wrong...but it does look that way. Although, there are only three posts, none of them claimed, so we should try and stay hopeful.
  8. I foresee a long week of protracted disappointment and repeated rejections... Applied to many high-ranked schools because of the "you never know" factor (and because my advisers thought I should), but now I don't look forward to the continued stress about a bunch of mostly hopeless applications. On another note, @metaphysician I completely agree with your complaint about schools not sending out rejections, or sending them out weeks after decisions have been made. It takes five minutes to write a courteous and timely note to rejected applicants. Perhaps the GradCafe community should start polling about this and mentioning/ranking/awarding schools/departments that treat their applicants with the greatest/least degree of respect.
  9. Two Cornell posts! Anybody here able to claim them?
  10. Don't forget Harvard!
  11. Congrats to all of you Yale waitlists! Kantian without one here! Though... Kant say I expected otherwise.
  12. Yale waitlist, anyone?
  13. Our resident expert @jacbarcan's prediction for St. Louis is tomorrow, so hopefully you'll hear very soon! Congrats on your Knoxville admit!
  14. Thanks so much for this, Nat!! Been hoping anxiously for news from all three of these, so I'll be very interested!
  15. Just around the corner, I hope!
  16. Such an awfully quiet day! And I was really hoping to finally hear from Notre Dame...
  17. Congrats!!!
  18. Another Yale post? Not sure about this one...
  19. What do you guys think about contacting UCLA? I'd be interested to hear whether all offers and waitlists have been sent out yet or not and they have a terrible record with sending rejections (last year they came April 15th, apparently).
  20. I hope so, let us know! I went to visit there before I applied and met several of the faculty - everything made a good impression on me and it seems like a good program. Best of luck!
  21. If it is any comfort to you (what is, in this craziness), for a number of reasons I was restricted in my choice of undergraduate institution and am currently the only philosophy major on a campus with one professional philosopher. All the while, my fellow students remain confident I will be admitted into the entire Ivy League. So: I see where you're coming from, lol. Also @jacbarcan did you apply to Yale? If so, good luck!
  22. Thanks for letting us know! I wonder why they're spreading these out so long (cough, two days is long for anxious applicants) this year.
  23. I was just coming to the forum to post this same message, then I saw your name and thought: finally, he must've gotten his e-mail! Sorry to see you're still waiting, too. These protracted Yale posts are really drawing this out to painful lengths. I find the admissions process to be increasingly similar to Tantalus' torment.
  24. Thanks - it sounds like a good program and it's a great place to live! Congrats on Georgetown, that's awesome! You applied to their law school, right? If you got into UT-Austin you stand a great chance of getting into Georgetown too, I think. Law admissions are a lot more predictable than PhD programs, since they're focused so much on your numerical credentials in relation to the school's medians. Getting wait listed at UCLA (top 10 PGR!) means you must be very well qualified, so I would not be worried about the need to apply to MA's!
  25. Good luck! I also applied to many programs, but it's hard to find a school with a good philosophy program that also has a top law department. For law, I really don't want to go much below the T14 (except UCLA/Notre Dame), but for philosophy those same schools are mostly hopelessly out of reach. Unless by some miracle I end up being accepted at one of my remaining applications, I think I will go to Colorado's Ph.D. program and move on to law school afterwards. Have you had any luck with a dual program admission so far?
