The Netflix/Marvel TV series have the best villains; I highly recommend Jessica Jones and Daredevil. Supernatural is my go-to binge watching show and one of my all time favorites.

No invitation for the recruitment weekend means a rejection?
SAH replied to JellyPaPaPa's topic in Waiting it Out
Unfortunately, it is unlikely that you will receive an offer of admission from a school that didn't invite you to the interview/recruitment day. However, some schools will hold a few applications "in reserve" or on a wait list and will contact these applicants if space opens up. -
All snark aside, it means that you will probably get an interview. That is, you have a higher probability of getting an interview now than you did at the start of the process, but are not guaranteed one. PIs have a lot of say in who gets interviewed/admitted, but they usually can't bypass the admissions committee/graduate school. Best case scenario, your POI says "I want this one", the admissions committee/graduate school checks to ensure that you meet minimum requirements and you are invited to interview.

School: University of Michigan Area: Cognitive and Cognitive Neuroscience Rationalization: Too many applicants, etc., etc. Comment: I saw rejections go out the last few days and thought i might get lucky, no dice. Coping tactics: I'm extremely fortunate to have been invited to three interviews before I got my first rejection, so I'm concentrating on that instead of agonizing over this rejection.

Hi there! I've applied to 14 programs in cognitive or cog/cogneuro. I'm doing pretty alright now that I have a few interviews, something to prepare for instead of just sitting around having a meltdown

Fall 2016 Cognitive Neuroscience (Psychology Departments)
SAH replied to Gvh's topic in Psychology Forum
Congrats on your invitations!! I heard from my POI at Princeton the beginning of December and received the official department invite around the 22nd. I'm currently an undergrad at UCSD and I'm pretty sure that my thesis advisor said that the department has sent all of their invites. Berkeley sent all of their invitations around the 23rd of December, I didn't get one either *shrugs* -

Anyone heard from UC Davis Psychology PhD Program?
SAH replied to h0ping4phd's topic in Waiting it Out
I am also waiting on UCD and would love to know if anyone has heard from them! -
Hello my snow/very cold place dwelling friends! I have a silly question, but am honestly befuddled and need your help. What on earth do you do with coats/hats/etc. when you get to class? I mean, your buildings are heated right? I keep imagining rows and rows of students, all clad those little knit hats with pompoms on top, diligently taking notes while sweating like they’re running a marathon. Maybe there’s a coat rack? Is in-class coat shopping covered in your syllabi? "Any student found to be exchanging coats in class is subject to a zero on one assignment and referral to the ethics committee." Come to think of it, do you grocery shop in wool coats and scarves? How the Fudge Unicycles Circling Kmart does this work? Thankfully yours, A Californian

I've had two phone conversations with potential PI's. These conversations were completed before applications were submitted and both POIs have invited me to interview at their campus. Prof1 conducted this phone call as a fairly hard-core interview. He obviously had a list of questions prepared and expected fairly detailed answers (i.e. he asked follow-up questions if I was brief or didn't go into detail). Most of his questions centered around my previous research; the methods, theories, and rational thereof (I applied to experimental PhD programs in Cognitive Psychology, not sure if a clinical psych prof would care about other things). He also had the usual questions: why do I want to work in Prof1's lab in particular? What are my career goals? He also asked if there were any other profs at his institution that I was also interested in working with. At the end of the interview, Prof1 asked if I had any questions for him. The whole thing lasted about 1.5 hours. Side note: he was unendingly polite and kind, even if I didn't quite answer the question the way that he was expecting. This really made me what to work under/with him! I got the impression that he's a fantastic advisor by how he asked questions and guided my responses, as well as by how he answered my questions. Prof2 started the conversation by asking what I wanted to talk about. Luckily I had a list of questions prepared! He periodically asked me questions, similar to those of Prof1, but integrated them as follow-ups to his answers to my questions. Whole thing lasted about half an hour. Side note: I thought this was a great way to put the interviewee at ease. He gave the impression of having done this a thousand times. Side, side note: I ask for phone instead of Skype interviews if given the choice. My main reason for this is that my internet is spotty and Skype doesn't work super well, but it has the benefit of allowing me to have notes in front of me without giving the impression that I'm not engaged in the conversation. Hope this helps!

Many schools state explicitly on their website whether or not applicants not receiving interviews are eligible for admission. I'm sure that you've already scoured that source, but if not it's a great place to start. I would be extremely hesitant to contact the department this early. Administrative staff often has a say in who gets admitted and they may not look favorably on being "bugged" (imagine if you were the fifth or sixth person who called them that day!).

This is the sort of thing that I hope I will have to worry about In all seriousness, if I do get an interview at UCLA the airfare cost will be a significant hinderance. Fingers crossed that they are like Princeton, where the department comps a large portion of the airfare. -

@Tahlain I wouldn't worry if you haven't heard. According to the UCLA psychology department website "Applicants that are invited to an interview event will be notified at least two weeks before the event." I suspect this means that they don't finalize invitations until relatively late. -

Interview invitation from Princeton, phone call from POI. He said to expect official invitation by email on the 21st. Visiting days are February 4th-6th. Congrats to everyone who has already received an invitation! -
I finally finished all 14 apps! Application season for me ended at the same time as the quarter, and I'm having a really hard time now that I suddenly have nothing to do. I'm lucky because a few of the school that I applied to are supposed to send out interview notifications this month. I don't know what I'd do if I had to wait until Jan/Feb for any news.
