  1. I’ve been mentally prepared to wait til early 2019 so today is my last day of mental freedom before I start freaking out too ?
  2. Why is that? What subfields are you looking at? We all have a little bit of imposter syndrome I’m sure
  3. UC Santa Barbara... and OMG Grey's hahahaha I would be sooo into it too! Did you finish applying to all your schools? I just have Boston left and will do that first thing in the New Year since the deadline isn't until January 7th and my bank account needs a break. Good luck to you!
  4. Nice! I like the Denver area more than Seattle, but liked Washington's program more...
  5. We have a very similar focus and quite some overlap in our schools too :) I'm looking to do sociolinguistics and applying to Georgetown, NYU, UPenn, Stanford, U Washington, McGill, Boston U and Michigan. Thanks for starting this thread! I'll be interested to see how everyone's doing and how the apps turned out. Are you pretty squared away on the apps at this point? My first deadline is December 1 (a week from today!) and last one is January 7.
  6. I'm a prospective applicant for Fall 2019. I'm researching programs and assembling application info now. My request to meet with staff at a department I'm interested in was accepted and meeting arranged. What can I do to best prepare for this? Are there specific questions I should (or shouldn't) ask?
  7. I'm 30, and haven't been really maintaining word in academia or research, although I have been involved. I'm especially nervous because I'm really clueless as to how competitive I am, but one of my recommenders (who is very strong and notable in the field) said it wasn't uncommon to be applying for my PhD at this age and knew my application and still encouraged it. I'm lucky because my partner and I are both willing and able to move depending on if/where I get in, although I couldn't really imagine making such a transition if our circumstances were much different, it's both a good time for us. That being said, it's been frustrating to not be able to plan our future since we're waiting to see how this pans out and what it will mean for us. And then of course the sheer anxiety I might not get in anywhere... you know how it is.
  8. Hey, everyone who heard from Berkeley so far... could you let us know your concentration or the POI (if that is kosher)?
  9. Yep, Georgetown is great for socio, but no guaranteed funding, which is such a shame!
  10. Yep- same boat! Where all are you applying to? And good luck!!
  11. As I told fuzzylogician, Tnot many programs have this information readily available, although Yale does, and their 55% completion rate was sobering, especially as it was a top tier school! When I saw that, I did research to find the national average was about 56%, so Yale was below that! Naturally there are a variable of reasons, but I was curious to investigate and/or hear any firsthand accounts.
  12. Totally understandable, and I certainly agree. I should say though, that not many programs have this information readily available, although Yale does, and their 55% completion rate was sobering. When I saw that, I did research to find the national average was about 56%, so Yale was below that! Individual programs probably say a lot though, as you suggested.
  13. I have been aiming to apply for a PhD program for a few years now and am sending off quite a few applications for Fall 2017. Only now have I come across the dismal PhD completion stats nationwide, hovering around 55-56%. Has this worried anyone else? Has anyone dropped out of a PhD program that could comment? Are the programs just that difficult and taxing? I understand some of these numbers will be due to not qualifying, possibly funding, etc, but with barely half completing, it would be hard to say that that's not at least a little worrisome. Any comments?
  14. Oh I was just kidding about Harvard since it seemed like no one was applying anywhere, that I might get in everywhere. I am looking more into language documentation and contact, change, variation etc. When are your applications due? Have you started working on them yet?
  15. Welcome! I agree, it's great to collaborate. Just FYI I am not a guy - I am a woman. What schools are you looking into?
  16. Did any of your programs require interviews as part of the admissions process?
  17. Thanks so much for the offer of help, @vonham ! Just curious how it's going for people, where they're applying, if/when they hear back, etc. So it might be a little early for that. I started on my applications over the summer, however, already submitted one, and the others are pretty much ready to go, awaiting a few minor tweaks. From what I see, most applications are due starting the beginning of December, so still time for people to report.
  18. Soooo seems kinda quiet around here with the fall 2017 PhD application to Linguistics. Is no one applying this year?? Tell me now so I can apply to Harvard lololol just kiddinggggg. But seriously - anyone submit any applications yet?? How's it going...???
  19. A lot of it could depend on the department itself and its averages and current student body scores, etc. Where are you thinking of applying to?
  20. Perhaps you've already addressed this before, but I'm relatively new. I see you are successfully attending a grad school and curious about your background prior to and/or during applying to a PhD program?

PS I LOVE the little ratty in your picture!

  21. Thanks for your suggestion. I already graduated with my BA in Linguistics and I did do the thesis option. This was a few years ago though, so I'm trying ot get back in the game and also try to gain focus on what I'd really like my thesis to be in
  22. I am looking into a PhD in Linguistics, likely for Fall 2017. I want more experience/research prior to applying for both my own sake (to help narrow and focus my PhD thesis interests) and the sake of my application. Any suggestions/ideas for how to make this happen? How to find projects or research or get involved, short of enrolling in a terminal masters program (which I do not want to do)?
