We've wined, we've waited, now it's time to celebrate 2016

yeah! i think it's pretty different. my roommate mentioned that the pressure typing on a mechanical keyboard is a lot different than using a normal keyboard, and i definitely agree. but yeah, it's super clickety clackety lol. i'm trying to take it day by day for sure! like the scientist i am, i've been reading up on a lot of stuff..and getting the diagnosis really put a lot of things of the past into a better perspective. i really want to get a dopamine and serotonin molecule most likely on my ankle! it's something i've wanted for a while as i've dealt with clinical depression since my teens, so it means quite a lot to me. yeah!! there are a ton of people in my program with tats and it makes me super happy. good luck to you with your grant!! -

oh my gosh, my PC parts came a day early and I love it!!! Had some flubs after building..ie not checking if my gfx card was VGA compatible (which it wasn't) so I had to run out and buy an HDMI cable. theeen i bent the wifi adapter, so I sped to best buy at 8:45 when they closed at 9 to get a new one. but overall I'm in loooooooooove. And the mechanical keyboard is so clickety clackety and I wonder if I'm driving my roommate crazy lol! we had the first official day of bio class (even though stats has been going on for 5 days already lol..) and the lecturer is awesome! 2 hours of biochemistry and I was engaged and paying attention for the whole thing. a few girls and I are going to a piercing parlor this weekend for piercings and I want a consultation for another tattoo, so that's cool. what's not cool tho is that i was diagnosed with bipolar II about a week and a half ago..still trying to process that. -

awesome! what kind are you building? i'm not building anything too fancy (i say as my wallet groans)..i5-4690K, started with a 256gb ssd as I have a 1TB external, 8gb RAM to start off and a GTX 960 that a friend had given me. the real feat will be fitting all of that and having great cable management into a micro ATX mini case. I'll upgrade as time goes on, but I think this is a pretty nice start..my old setup had two monitors but my current desk isn't big enough, so maybe in the future I'll have my dual setup again just wanted something to be able to play games when I wanna, and depending on the lab I join I might be doing some computational work (eek). i'm really excited for my new mechanical keyboard honestly, lol... thank you! -

i bought parts to build a pc! they should be here by wednesday the latest. emailing PIs that I'm interested in was intimidating, but a lot of them are really sweet which I'm relieved about. also tomorrow I'm going to meet with my program mentor who's the year above me, and she is so sweet. i'm super excited. -

wow, only on second day of orientation and i'm exhausted!! yesterday was an all-day from 8 am to 9 pm sorta thing. today was safety/animal training in the morning, and lunch and poster session/mixer in the evening. and that poster session is only one of 11. surprisingly, i thought i wouldn't like the molecular physio and biophysics department, but some people there do really neat stuff. i think i'm going to rotate in a few of those labs. -

it's so cool that there's so many PSU students here. orientation starts on tuesday for me, and i'm kind of freaking out! just what kind of impression i'll make, if i'll fit in with my cohort, etc etc. also my roommate hasn't made any progress in unpacking since i've been here..and i've been here since Monday. I'm getting kind of anxious at the state of unrest in our place, and I can't really do anything about it.. -

i feel you. my room is the only place i can get some escape from the sea of unpacked boxes. i really want to unpack them, but they're my roommate's and I don't wanna touch her stuff. -

this is my first time living with cats and i love it!!! one of my roommate's cats loves looking out of my window, so i adjusted my blinds to cat height just for him. i also think i'm going to dye my hair before orientation starts, wish me luck! -

yay, furniture! glad it worked out in the end. my room is kinda nearly done? still missing my nighstand and desk which should be delivered tomorrow. for now the things that should be in them are strewn on the floor, though. -
I'm a new driver (well, have had license for ~6 years now but lived in cities with good public transport) and am on my parent's insurance/car is registered under my dad's name for a grace period while I kinda adjust to driving in a new city. But I foresee that I will eventually establish residency in Tennessee and thus surrender my NY license, transfer ownership of the car to myself, and get TN car insurance. New York is so strict with inspection laws, and I'm not driving 14h to get my car inspected again next year. I'm going to wait for a couple of months though..maybe change all of that early next year.

haha, it wasn't without some bumps though! when we got to the apartment complex, the leasing office was closed...at 2 pm..when posted hours are 9-5. My roommate was at orientation so we had to wait until she got home at around 4:30. But everything's kinda okay now! -

Started the journey to Nashville with my dad this morning! We're in nowhere Virginia for the night, with 6 hours left to go. I drove part of the way, which was actually pretty fun! I can't wait to get to my new place, though. Yay for finally arriving, @hippyscientist! I too need a toolkit...gonna put together lots of furniture as well.. -
What courses are you taking your first semester/quarter?
Effloresce replied to lovekilledinos's topic in Officially Grads
First years in our program have to take a comprehensive bio course to bring everyone up to speed, along with a mentoring course and a weekly smaller group meeting. I think that translates to 8 hours + lab rotations. -

she didn't end up renegotiating anything, actually. her concerns were solved with a simple conversation with the leasing office which i'm really happy about because there was nothing in the lease that i felt needed negotiation.. also hmm..my life was pretty bad in january, i think. but that's clinical depression for ya.. -

this is so exciting! everyone's moving and starting their programs, ahhh. my roommate moved into the apartment, and she says it's awesome! i'm so much more excited to move in now. my dad has mapped out our trip, and we're leaving out sunday at 10 AM and should be in nashville by monday afternoon (with stops along the way and an overnight stay in nowhere, virginia). -
nope, it's not worth taking it imo. i had this same thought when i was applying. for comparison, my stats were ~3.1 GPA, 158V 160Q GRE, 4.5 years research experience (2 at NIH, 2.5 at my college including an honors' thesis + a summer internship), and a second author paper in cell reports. I assume that my LORs were pretty good, and I wrote a solid SOP. i fared pretty well in my application cycle, and my only regret is not applying to more top tier schools. honestly, research experience, LORs and a great SOP can heavily offset a lower GPA. good luck!

@MarineBluePsy is there any way to switch labs at this point? i'm sorry you're in this sucky situation. sooo my roommate is moving into our apartment tomorrow, and has made some changes to the lease to negotiate w/ the landlord which means i guess i'll be signing that when i actually move in next week? hmm -

thanks, you too! yeah, the bus route is pretty convenient. on days i dont feel like driving, or days i know i wont be leaving really late, i might use the bus. i'm just worried about if they run on time etc. -

first day of orientation is august 16th! my roommate made a good point..there's a bus that runs to campus directly from our apartment complex which is free for students. but for me, it's a trek across campus cause the med center is all the way to the back, and since i'm uh..slow at getting ready cause I neeeed my makeup, I can foresee issues with getting to campus on time. but at the same time, the parking pass is $50 a month... also, driving used to make me SO anxious, but i actually love it
