  1. if you search for vanderbilt classifieds on google, there's a page where current students/people in the area are listing potential houses/apartments for rent. that's what i've been following.
  2. i'm not sure you'll get any better deals especially if you're looking to live close to campus. most of the grad students said somewhere around 1k is the average for a one bedroom apartment. personally, i'm looking into having roommates to cut rent costs.
  3. i'm thinking of going super dark too! i always feel weird dying my hair though because it's really short and curly so it feels like a waste..
  4. happy friday everyone! also welcome @janetjanejune and congrats! my nose ring is back and i impulsively got my conch pierced too! sooo shiny. just gotta get through today and then it's (unofficial) celebration time with friends!
  5. glad you got it! and oh nooooooo, get those anti-histamines ready. i made a little facebook post about where i'm going to grad school!..well actually I just updated my info and facebook shared it so..now everyone knows!
  6. Like, trying to make sure things are in layman's terms?
  7. Don't wanna hijack the thread, but I will bump it to say that I'm going to Vandy's IGP program this summer/fall too! I visited Nashville for my interview, but only got a small feel for it. From what I saw, there's a lot of apartment complexes both close and a bit farther out from Vandy, as well as house shares etc in many different parts of the city. The grad students all said the stipend was fairly comfortable to live on, and looking at rent prices that seems to be pretty true!
  8. yay, it's wednesday! happy hump day everyone! i'm so exhausted..i'm going to try to leave the lab early today.
  9. I just realized I can get my nose repierced since interview season is over. Yaaaaaaaaaay
  10. in regards to introvertedness, @pterosaur I live with three people currently, and most of our interactions are: "Effloresce! Hey, I haven't seen you in ages! I thought you weren't here!" "Yeah...I've been here the whole time..." I really need to work on interacting more.
  11. congrats!!! i am nervous too even after being out of the house for almost 6 years (undergrad + two years working). there's a blog for vandy students, and an undergrad to PhD student said they had the same issue, but ended up rooming with someone else who had been out of school for a bit already and was used to "adulting". when i moved from undergrad to DC (i had two weeks in between graduation and moving), i did a TON of research beforehand for apartments, living in the area etc..and the transition wasn't too awful. it also helped that there was a listserv for other fellows in the area listing available housing, furniture for sale, and people looking for roommates.
  12. I grew up with a Yorkie..the cutest little 11 lb thing, but she sure was sassy! I can't wait to move..I know I won't be able to handle a puppy so I'm thinking about getting a cat for grad school. Where I live now didn't allow animals, so I'm suuuuper excited.
  13. Wow, all these Penn State-ees! Happy Monday everyone!
  14. Yeah, I feel what everyone's saying so hard on the friend front. I thought after graduating undergrad and moving to a big city that I'd find my niche really easily, but between working full-time and being an introvert (who plays video games more often than she should) it's been hard to find that sorta core group. I'm so excited to move and have a fresh start, ya know? And the entering class is projected to be from 60-65..so I'm sure there are going to be a lot of people I'll get along with.
  15. i am so so happy for you. congrats!
  16. I got the official acceptance from Vandy's grad school, and I'm hesitant about putting in my acceptance. I'm weird...also still sick. But the weekend is soon, yaaaaaaaay.
  17. it's okay! it's funny, I was sick the week before my Vanderbilt interview, well for the interview, and now sick the week after haha. unfortunately, I have a lot of stuff to do in lab still..but I've been falling asleep very shortly after getting home.
  18. i'm sick...again. ugh.
  19. so heading to Vanderbilt in the summer..anyone have any insight on LGBT life in Nashville?
  20. honestly, from this application cycle, i've realized that while GPA/GRE scores are very important, research experience and glowing LORs seem to be seen as just as or even more important. in your case, you have a lot of experience and assuming you've been an awesome researcher at these places, you'll get great LORs. you may feel that you aren't qualified, but you most likely are!
  21. true! i went through this after undergrad but this time, i'm a little bit more nervous. but i know once i get settled, everything will be just fine. i'm sooo excited to move to nashville! you're right. i end my current position mid-june, so i'll have a month and a halfish til i move which will be awesome!
  22. I think i've made up my mind but now I need to let down Virginia...and I'm not looking forward to writing that email at all.. Also now freaking out about moving costs, finding a place etc etc. Oooooh dear.
  23. just got an offer, 98% sure i'm going to go!!!!
  24. I was at Vandy this weekend, and @biochemgirl67, I can see why you fell in love with it!!! Although I will admit, I could tell that everyone was exhausted from interview season, especially since I was on the last interview weekend. I know their turn around is really quick, so I'm suuuuper nervous to hear back (hopefully) today.
