man, i'm sitting here reading all the talk about apartments and moving and it's getting me all kinds of anxious..
-
sorry for the double post but! living in amherst is really nice. the city and surrounding areas are extremely liberal, and there's a ton of people around since there's like 4-5 colleges/universities pretty close together. i never felt unsafe in the area (would frequently study in town and head back to campus around 11ish, both alone and with friends), and everyone is really friendly too. if you don't like the cold, you're going to really suffer during the winter because january-february are b r u t a l. spring and fall are gorgeous, but summers are very humid and can get quite hot. a lot of people talk shit about the pvta but i used it quite frequently to get around from amherst college to various places for class, leisure, etc. as long as you don't have a strict schedule, it's okay. buses tend to be late quite a bit..so keep that in mind when planning to get around. a perk is that it's free for students if you show your ID, so that's nice! there's some things to do in northampton..lots of restaurants, some bars, a kinda meh club (diva's) but overall i liked noho a lot too! sometimes there were cool shows that came to northampton (i think people went and saw vampire weekend in my freshman year). a pretty popular tattoo/piercing studio is there that i frequented quite a bit, too. but yeah, boston is 2hrs way and it's easy to hop on a peter pan and get there. new york is about 4 hours and i have no clue about rhode island. since i lived on campus, i have no idea about rent prices though, sorry!

i went to amherst college for undergrad and got around without a car. the bus system is pretty okay from what i've experienced, so it's easy to get around via that but I imagine as a grad student you'd be doing more cooking/running for groceries etc than I did (since I was on a meal plan), and that might be annoying. in regards to supermarkets though, there's a stop and shop, target (with groceries), and trader joes along the bus route and about 10ish minutes away from the UMass campus. it's not awful to travel with groceries on the public transportation either as long as you time things nicely to avoid the rush of undergrads. you can go straight to NoHo via bus too..takes about 30-40 minutes, so it's really nice if you want to go somewhere else for food, bars, etc.

congratulations @hippyscientist!!!! finally after a month of waiting, the vandy weekend is here!!! i'm really excited (but really nervous) to meet people from the program but i've only heard great things, so it can't be that awful, i suppose.

interviewing to be accepted (hopefully)!! it's a top choice for me and everyone that's gone has really loved the program, so i'm extremely excited but also extremely nervous.
-
congrats!!!

happy thursday, all! it's gonna hit 80 in the dmv area today..my walk to work was so pleasant, this weather is great! in a week, i'll be at vanderbilt. i'm really nervous.
-
i love your name and avatar...
-
yay! so exciting!

awesome! the only thing kinda worrying me about UVA is the timing..i end my current position in mid-June and they start beginning of July so it's very little time to transition. yeah, that's kinda weird that it's taking so long for vandy to get back to you..i hope you hear back soon! everyone seems to love vandy so I'm feeling pretty positive about the program already based on others' experiences and what I've been reading.
-
yeah, i went back in january and have an offer from UVA too! i loved the program, but vandy is another one of my top choices so i'm waiting to see how i like it down in nashville.
-
how did you like UVA? also i've been looking at results for vandy (i'm going next week and freaking out cause that seems so late) and it seems they gave out offers to people that interviewed after that big weekend, which is really weird.
-
congrats!!!!
-
congrats!!! everyone says wonderful things about vandy so i'm crossing my fingers that I love the visit and get an offer from them.
-
yeah that was my issue too. i was happy with the offer but my other top choice is still 3 weeks away from interview. :|
-
freaking out cause i'm going to the last interview weekend for vandy and they do rolling admissions so i'm afraid i won't get an offerrrrrrrr
-
nope, there's an interview weekend on 3/4 and 3/18 as well. i'm going to the latter and it seems so far awayyyyyy
-
3 weeks to vandy...
-
I'm sorry to hear that. That's so odd. :/

Did Vanderbilt get back to people from the unusually large second interview weekend?
-
yeah, that makes a lot of sense. thanks! i also wear makeup everyday and was a bit hesitant about it during my first interview weekend. i like to go a bit daring with my lip colors, but i'll definitely tone it down for my next interview weekend.

omg i'm loving the makeup talk. i love liquid eyeliner..for some reason, i can't get down with gel eyeliner. i bought a gel eyeliner and brush from BH cosmetics and i tried to apply it..no luck at all. i think it's just a matter of sitting down and figuring it out one day. i recently went on a journey to find a buildable coverage natural powder foundation since i have some scars and stuff to cover, and fell in love with tarte amazonian clay powder! it's amazing. i just love makeup so much, ahhh. which brings me to a question: how do you all feel about makeup and interviews? what's too much?
