  1. Those are actually pretty common. We have at least three of them where I live, and I actually worked at one for a while, along with three other people with art degree/getting their degree. We never tried to pass them off as actual painting lessons though, more of a fun girls night out activity where you learn how to paint something you didn't think you could while drinking. It was a pretty fun job and I got paid really well too. We were a franchise though, so we actually did supply them with canvases and paint and stuff, then would guide them step by step through the painting.
  2. I think it kind of varies depending on the situation. I've been at my current job for about a year and a half now. They know that I've applied to schools, and I told them I would let them know as soon as I found out for sure I was accepted so that they would definitely have months of time to prepare and hire someone new. I don't think it's necessarily important to let them know beforehand that you've applied places. But once you know for sure that you're in, I'd say let them know as soon as you know you're accepted, and tell them exactly when your last day will be. Though I'm reading the response above mine and I see people saying two weeks notice is plenty. I guess it really depends on how close you are with the people at the place you work. I'm in a very small, tight knit group, so we know and care a lot about each other's lives.
  3. Have you thought about using a crowdfunding website like indiegogo or kickstarter? If a guy can raise $55,000 to make potato salad, I'm sure you can use it. Just share your story and show some of your work, you never know what might happen. Also, have you looked into joining AIGA. I'm sure they have a lot of resources for graphic designers there. In regards to the portfolio site, I think the free ones shouldn't really be a turn off to employers as long as the work on them is good. Can I ask where this tiny place you live is?
  4. Oh, another suggestion. Why not try your hand at opening an etsy store? You can design posters and things like that and sell them there. There's a big market for things like wedding invitations, etc. It may not make you a ton of money, but it could certainly give you a little extra cash.
  5. There's a site called lynda.com that has a plethora of tutorials on it for so so many things. It does cost money, I don't think it's a lot though. However, if you have a LinkedIn profile, they send out emails all the time for a free week of Lynda access. YouTube is actually a really great resource too, people post tutorials on there all the time. There is also another similar site called Skillshare that hosts a library of videos too. For both of these sites you can find basics on all Adobe products, info about coding, flash, html, c++, etc. And there's even specialized things like hand lettering and stuff like that. Also, if you're still trying to make a portfolio site, there are many free ones like carbonmade or behance. You could even just make a tumblr or wordpress with your work. And I fully agree with what Relm said about the contracts. Google is your friend, you can definitely find some contract examples there. Good luck!
  6. I am in the same boat. I've gotten a flat out rejection from one and wasn't asked to interview for two others. I really really hope I hear something good from one of my other two soon. Where all did you apply/in what area?
  7. Oh I hope so! I do at least feel better knowing that no one seems to have heard from those two yet. I just need figure out how to stop driving myself nuts worrying.
  8. I saw that post about Delaware. I have very mixed feelings about living in New York, but maybe I'll still look into them. Thanks guys!
  9. I did add it to my site. I actually forgot I did that though until you just mentioned it. I'll have to look through it and see if I can analyze the results. I had no idea those schools didn't interview though, but that's mostly because I have no idea which schools do or don't. I didn't realize ASU would be so late. I saw that on the CAA page for them but for some reason didn't think that meant acceptances were going out that late. I thought it just meant that was the absolute latest they would notify someone. I don't know if my anxiety can handle waiting all the way until the middle of April. -__-
  10. Hey everyone, Does anyone know of any schools that still have open applications right now? My lack of responses recently has me thinking I maybe should have applied to more schools.
  11. You guys send some good luck vibes my way. I would really like to hear from UNM or ASU soon. Pretty sure I'm rejected from everywhere else I've applied even though I've only gotten one officially.
  12. Just noticed a few of you talking about FAFSA. I've been out of school for a few years now, so I kind of forgot that thing existed. Should I have already filled that out even though I don't know that I got in anywhere? I haven't even done my taxes yet this year.
  13. I also applied to ASU and Oregon. Haven't heard anything yet. And I think I've only seen one person mention interviewing with Oregon.
  14. Thanks! At least it wasn't my top choice. Hopefully I'll hear from the others soon.
  15. Oh yay, my first response is a rejection...
  16. What do you use to track visits to your site? I've been meaning to look into that. Congrats on your Austin interview btw, saw that in the other forum.
  17. Yay photo! I applied to ASU, UNM, UT Austin, University of Arizona, and University of Oregon. Has anyone gotten any results yet? Still waiting over here.
  18. Ugh, as if I wasn't anxious enough, now I'm having to deal with transcript issues. 3 of my schools wanted the transcript mailed to them. I'm not sure whether one of them got it because they don't have a site that shows that, but my last two apps that were due on January 15 allow me to check the status of my application and they both say they haven't been received. My undergrad university says they sent them on January 5, but I've spoken on the phone with the other schools and they say they have not received them. (Though ASU did tell me that it hasn't finished matching transcripts received in late December/early January to the applications) So I spoke to my undergrad university today to have them just resend them all. Thankfully they were very prompt in responding and even let me know that two of the schools use the same digital service they use and they could actually send those electronically and they would get them today. Sadly, ASU does not do this, and it has to be mailed to them. I really hope that works out because ASU is my top choice. And I'm just freaking out because they all say the application can't be processed until they have the transcript. Ugh. Okay, end rant.
  19. Congrats! That's great. I guess I should take that as a rejection for myself though.
  20. Oh, okay, that's interesting. Definitely good to know then. I'm in photo, and I haven't really been able to find any info about whether or not they interview or anything like that. And you're the first person I've seen post about them. I've just been hoping to hear something soon. And no, I haven't. I guess since we just reached the 2 week mark for UNM and ASU perhaps next week they'll start contacting people. Keeping my fingers crossed! Good luck with everything!
  21. @straightlines I see we're applying to a few of the same places. When did UA contact you to schedule your interview? And have you heard from any of the others? Also, what is your area of study within the arts?
  22. I finally spoke with an actual person today. And now I'm super frustrated. My application was due January 15, but I sent everything in around the 5th and had my transcript sent around then too. The girl I spoke to said they still haven't finished matching transcripts they received in late December/early January with the corresponding application, and that they can't send the application to the department until then. So it's possible they just haven't gotten to mine yet, but she said I should speak to my undergrad school to just make sure it was sent (which I'm about 98% sure it was since all the other schools I applied to have received them) This was a school that used slideroom to submit the portfolio and statements though, so do you guys think maybe the art department is at least able to look at that, even without the actual application?
  23. Ughhh, When I check the status of my application for the school I really want to go to, it says Pending Items, and when you hover over that, it says 'This application requires receipt of outstanding items in order to process.' The pending item is my undergrad transcript, which I requested from my undergrad university about three weeks ago. I also requested my transcript be sent to a few other schools, but none of those say it's missing, so I assume it must have been sent. Last week, I emailed the school I'm applying to asking if they had my transcript and just hadn't updated my status page yet or if they needed me to try sending it again, but no one has responded to me. Should I just ask my undergrad university to send it again? This is so dumb. I'm pretty sure I had to upload a PDF of the transcript during my application anyways. I really want to go to this school. I don't understand why they can't even process my application without this document.
  24. Just saw on the results database page that someone who applied to UT Austin for photo was sent an email for an interview. Whoever that was, congrats! Hoping I hear something today as well...
  25. For the sake of all of our sanity, I really hope we all start hearing things this week. I'm ready to cry, especially since it's already been 3 weeks since the deadline of two of my applications.
