Hey everyone. I'm a first-year MPH student at Queen's. If you have any questions about the program feel free to message me!

No I haven't. How were you provided with your Queens email?
-
It was 5:13 PM. Also, everyone on the email that I was sent was accidentally CC'd, not BCC'd. The director just followed up with a message saying that she accidentally sent the email to the entire group of applicants on the waiting list.

Just waitlisted for U of T Health Promotion

Nope not at all! It really depends on the type of position you're applying to, for example many government epidemiologists have MSc's.

I think it's important to keep in mind your end goals and the type of degree - thesis vs course based. If you're looking to get in to research, then school reputation might matter more. However, if you want to work for the federal government (Health Canada, PHAC etc.) or a local public health unit, then I don't think reputation matters as much. I worked for the government and they could really care less about where you did your degree. My managers said that they just look for someone who has an MPH and has taken a core group of courses (e.g. social determinants of health, program evaluation etc.). Also, SFU has a highly regarded MPH program, Queen's is well known for cancer epidemiology, and Waterloo is well known for their public health research, especially tobacco control. While McMaster and Western are highly regarded schools, their MPH programs are also quite new, so I would be wary of the "kinks" that need sorting out in these programs. So, I also think that it's important to consider the strengths of each individual school/program as well. That's just my perspective!

Also just an FYI - in the Portal it says that I'm rejected, but on Bear Tracks it still says that an admission decision is pending.

I was just rejected from U of A MPH Health Promotion (Distance). I'm a bit surprised since I have an 87.5 average in my last two years of undergrad and paid work experience in the health promotion field. However, based on stats on the U of A website, the majority of accepted students are from Alberta and I'm from out of province, so that may have contributed to their decision. Not too disappointed though since it was my last choice and I've already accepted an offer at Queen's!

Thank you!

Where did you see the public health rankings for QRRanking? I can't seem to fit it. Thanks!

When I accepted my offer online it said they needed a: "Successful completion of honours undergraduate degree (or equivalent) with upper second class standing, and receipt by Queen's University of an official transcript showing the awarding of the degree." At Queens an upper second class standing is equal to a 75%.

For Queen's I have to maintain an overall 75% average, which is the minimum requirement for applying to the program. For Guelph (which I just declined), they did not specify a particular average, they just wanted me to send in my transcript with my final semester grades once it is available. However, my average upon application to Guelph was well above the minimum requirement of a B+ within the final two years of undergrad, so I'm not sure if that had anything to do with the vague conditional acceptance. I have yet to hear from U of A, so unfortunately I can't comment on that, though I imagine that most programs just want you to meet the minimum requirements.

They did for me. I didn't receive an email.

I was admitted to Guelph today! I will be declining the offer though.

I got accepted to the 16 month program.
