  1. hahaha you're telling me. I'm sitting at a Panera Bread in Ithaca and my visiting weekend starts in 4.5 hours. Totally didn't even bring anything other than jeans and sneakers. YOLO
  2. I'd say that's great. It's not childish... what would be childish is to reject their money just to save your own ego.
  3. YAY!!!!!!!! That's awesome!!
  4. I feel bad for the abuse that I'm sure your refresh button is experiencing right now.
  5. Knowing our luck it's probably down for maintenance
  6. @The Interdisciplinarian Play music loud and proud with the windows down (bonus if it's under 40 degrees!), drink plenty of energy drinks, stop often, etc. etc. Listen to an audiobook if you want. I prefer to drive overnight for long trips just because there's less traffic, calmer and easier to think, but to each their own.
  7. @sjoh197 that story is a real keeper I'm not too worried about the drive. I've driven over night to Boulder, Ithaca and a few other places before (about 14-15 hours). Driving during the day is so ANNOYING though!
  8. Dang, that's a lot of time in the air! Hope you like flying I'm wishing Ithaca, New York weren't such a pain in the arse to get to. I'm leaving tomorrow for the visiting weekend and totally not looking forward to that 13+ hour drive.
  9. Dang... nice!!! Caltech has better weather anyway
  10. I'm moving to Ithaca and would like to commute (I already signed a lease about 5 miles off-campus and the route isn't bike-friendly at all... no bike lane or anything). The TCAT runs to my apartment complex about 4 times a day but I don't want to be stuck on campus after 5:00, and that $750 commuter permit makes my wallet scream in fear. What do?
  11. *applauds* This is beautiful.
  12. I feel kind of torn right now because two years ago I broke up with my ex when he went to grad school at the University of Nebraska (well, a few months afterward anyway). We were planning on getting back together when I went there, but now Cornell... Seriously, these things happen. Life happens. There's no saying that even if you stuck close by for graduate school, that you wouldn't have to move away from him for another reason eventually anyway. *hug*
  13. Aw... hippy... I'm so sorry. I wish that I could make you some tea and cookies right now.
  14. I just reserved a hotel room for my trip to Cornell this week and never has a phrase so clearly summarized my poor student status: "Your luxurious hotel room offers the following amenities at no charge to you: toilet, shower, bed"
  15. Finally Leo won an Oscar.
  16. I concur. Shoutout to my parents for teaching me how to pinch a penny, definitely going to come in handy for the next few years.
  17. ONWARDS WE MARCH INTO MARCH.
  18. Glad to hear that my "spam" folder in my e-mail is not the only one getting a few visits!
  19. Don't forget the matching pedicure. It's not spring break without a matching pedicure.
  20. Aw, thanks guys I love reading your stories so much...
  21. I'm sorry for the slightly-tipsy 3AM rambling, but going through this experience and watching so many people go through an admissions cycle without a single acceptance has actually made me realize a lot about myself. My professors applaud me for my perseverance and say that that's how I'm going to make it through grad school, but in reality I haven't had to persevere through anything. I'm a white, middle-class American in my early 20's with a functional and supportive family. In addition, I'm a complete wuss. Had I not received a single acceptance, I would not be the one saying "oh well, there's always next year". I would've been the one bad-mouthing each department that rejected me, with the maturity of a five-year-old (but at least I'd be famous in the "Favorite Rejection Quotes" topic!) I'm prepared for graduate school in a lot of ways, but one of those ways is not knowing how to deal with failure, because I've never had to. But in a few months, I'll be going from a school that is ranked 280th in my field to a school that is ranked in the top 10, and I'm going to be failing all over the place. That school is going to wish they had hired an underwater basketweaving major instead of a physics major, for all the good I'm going to do that department. The only time I will succeed is when I fail out of Cornell and write a comedy about how some white girl who doesn't know how to tie her own shoes (yes... seriously) tried to get her PhD in physics from Cornell. People will watch the shit out of that because my failing is going to be HILARIOUS. I don't even know where this was going. But the season I'm in the middle of for "How I Met Your Mother" is one of the best seasons of any show I've ever seen.
  22. I 100% support this notion!!
  23. I leave this coming Wednesday to go to Ithaca and sign for an apartment... The very thought makes me nauseous.
  24. I'm SO psyched for that Gilmore Girls reboot. I fell for the original SO hard.
