I think I'm just going to go to bed soon... totally not setting an alarm, though. My thought is that if I wake up when I'm normally supposed to wake up, it'll be an easy wake-up because I'll be so eager to check the results.

Beginning with the 2017 application, graduate students can only apply once, as either a first year or a second year student. This rule only applies if you are not a first-year grad student right now. Hey, me too! Broader impacts, shmoader impacts!
-
I'm a little sad that they aren't coming out until 6 instead of 3... I was hoping for a late-night tinychat session or something so we could wait together, but I'm sure most people won't be staying up until 6!
-
Interesting, interesting.... So two years from now would be better in theory... but I wonder how the NSF's funding will change based on this new rule. I.e., if they will accept more or fewer people. I'm with you, @Neist. I feel like I know you all so well from this thread and the Wine, Wait, and Whine thread from before... I would be thrilled if some of you got it <3
-
Because only half as many grad students will be applying, probably.
-
I haven't the slightest clue! What is everyone else planning on doing?
-
Yeah, I guess that's one way to get you out of bed And I highly doubt I'll get it. I made a lot of crucial errors in my application and ended up submitting it the day of the deadline anyway, just so I can say I applied. Which is fine with me... I'm attending a well-funded program, so I'd rather see the award go to someone who needs it financially, y'know? You're probably saying that because I had such good luck with admissions, but I put my everything into grad school apps, but not the NSF... Anyway, best of luck to you

Wow, long time no see! The maintenance notification went up today, says it will be down between 11PM tonight and 6AM tomorrow morning. In previous years, it's always been down between 11PM and 3AM from Monday-Tuesday or Thursday-Friday, so we're pretty sure that it's tonight.

I agree - number of publications is mostly about luck, and corresponds very little to the potential of a student. I have more publications than most because my university doesn't have graduate students, so the undergrads hitch rides on the research projects performed by the professors themselves - I was mostly a code monkey who produced figures until I learned enough to be able to help with theoretical calculations, so the brainpower behind all publications on my resume is about 1% me, and 99% my professors. It simply isn't fair that this carries as much weight on my resume as a publication that was spearheaded by a student.

If they would've had one, I totally would've

Also, today I bought a giant Easter bunny on clearance at the store for me to hug when I don't get the GRFP...
-
Maybe email professors you're interested in working with to ask if they take research students over the summer?
-
So here's a question to you all: do you prefer waiting for admissions when you don't know when results are coming out, or for the GRFP (for at least the past 24 hours), when you do know when it's coming out?
-
SO much this. This time tomorrow, what will I have to look forward to???

Ghirardelli (don't know how to spell either) is my spirit animal, hippy... those caramel ones though :'( A puppy is a lot of work...the tricky part is being able to let it out when you're at work (surely you won't take it with you all day everyday), because puppies need to pee ridiculously often. I'm hesitating to get a cat (or two ) although I've been wanting to get one for years, because I don't think I'll be home all that much... just saying, you may want to try out grad school for awhile and see what your schedule is like. But then again, I don't know
-
That's my thought, too. My proposal was also unrelated to my undergrad research and more to what I want to do as a grad student, though I did base it off of an REU I did last summer. But I do have a strong research background so writing the relevant background is my only hope... that, and being a female in physics
-
Yeah, plus I applied to the wrong subfield (physics, instead of biological physics, which is what my proposal was for). I swear if I get this award, I will really question the judgement of the NSF...
-
Troll theory is that whoever posts that their NSF application is listed as "reviewed" and not "received" is just trolling
-
My research proposal was complete and utter bullshit, and they'll know it. Woo!
-
I'm glad others do this... tomorrow I'll be all like "yeah, I knew I wasn't going to win anyway, but just applied for the hell of it... I didn't even know when they were sending out results! haha! " Yes. I know the university near me (University of Illinois) usually has a couple of winners in pure physics some years... no worries! Also, I'm with the group who is just going to hear in the morning. I'll wake up a few hours early though, check my e-mail, and then when I'm rejected I can just go back to sleep for a few depressing more hours.
-
Or maybe someone has a song that isn't so... gross?
-
I'm going to laugh so hard if we're all just staying up and/or waking up early for normal maintenance that isn't even the release... like, they end up changing the fonts of one of the tiny links at the bottom, or something
-
Judging by your username... guess you're pulling an all-nighter
-
Thanks @Neist, for some reason I really needed that
