So, I'm getting interviewed for being the first from my school to win the GRFP. Which would be great, if there weren't a color photo being taken. Which would be great, if my hair weren't just dyed a crazy color. Which would be great, if my parents weren't going to kill me if they find out. WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOPS

The lack of caps lock in your post means that you are handling that much well than I would've. I would've been FUMING!

I am going to defer it for one year because Cornell offered me a first-year fellowship.

Yeah WTF? That's pretty BS.

Also... real talk though. One of my friends is really trying to get into grad school... he applied to 16 places and got rejected from all but one, where he was put on a waitlist. It looks like he isn't going to get in there. He's so much more passionate than I am and I know that grad school is his one dream... anyone have any clues for what I can say to make the road a little less rough for him? He's older (mid 30's) and so I know his timeline is constantly on his mind. I just don't know what to say... it's gone from "hang in there" to "maybe look for backup plans". Help?

Can't hurt to tell them, I guess? I was really looking forward to telling my professors that I got the GRFP today, but apparently someone at the university got notified and spilled the beans all over the department before I even got to school. FU!!

Of all the ones I read, that was the one that made me burst out laughing in the middle of class.

Yeah, I didn't have any "broader impacts" in my research proposal... I barely gave a motivation for the research itself. For my broader impacts reviews, they looked only at my personal statement and commented about things like my community service (which there isn't that much of). So I guess the proposal isn't taken as seriously as I was afraid it was.

Aw... whoops! I don't understand why you even have to put one when applying as an undergrad.

Yes I'll be rooting for you again next year, Neist!

I got really lucky with my reviewers, that's for sure. None of them said a single thing about my research proposal (which was a total trainwreck). So I got 3 E/E's.

The site always goes down for maintenance around 11PM EST the night before results are posted. It's 11PM EST and the site just went down (and the maintenance notification came out earlier today, or yesterday). ANd it's always on a Tuesday or Friday.
