  1. Yeah! I know quite a few instruments at the middle school level (trombone, trumpet, sax), and some that I'm pretty proficient at (piano, clarinet, xylophone, guitar) But my personal favorite is the ukulele. I play around town whenever I can, I like to sit on a bench in our little downtown area and play (not for tips or anything) especially around the holidays.
  2. You totally should... as a grad student, I feel like it's probably pretty important to be a person OUTSIDE of academia, you know? As long as the schedule is flexible, that's the gist I got...
  3. I mean, mullets have gotta come back sometime, right? Letting the bleach sit in my hair now... color stripper smells NASTY.
  4. You guys have so much more skill than I do... but my friend has assured me that while I'm in New York and half of my hair is dark brown (natural) and half of it is still bleached, I could probably dye it brown on my own We'll see!
  5. Is your natural hair color pretty light? I think that's my problem... I have to bleach it first Also... mad props to you for doing it yourself!
  6. No kidding! I'm actually having a friend do mine (twice, haha), and I'm SO glad... walking into a beauty supply store was overwhelming. Volume 10 or 20 or 30 or 40 developer? What brand of dye? Cream lightener or bleach? Soft or hard brush and how large? This color will go nicely on your hair but this other color which LOOKS EXACTLY THE SAME won't really work. If you use Saran wrap the colors blend more than with tin foil, Washing your hair with conditioner it will mix them more, you're using the wrong shampoo, you have to sleep on a towel, this color bleeds more than the rest, AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
  7. I didn't bleach it first, so instead of "galaxy hair" there are just awkward blue streaks...
  8. And my hair dye adventure yesterday turned out horribly... so now it's another 10 hours of adventure.
  9. Ugh... does anyone else have programs whose offers they've declined keep e-mailing them? Berkeley just e-mailed me for the sixth time... I declined their offer over a month ago...
  10. Yep! Moreover, if you vacate it before "leasing season", you still have to pay for the remaining months. That's why subleasing (a person "taking over someone else's" rent") is common.
  11. I actually begin my lease six days before I graduate So I'm graduating at 7PM on Friday, May 6th, then I'm driving all night (14 hours) to Ithaca to pick up my keys on Saturday. In regards to your circumstance, you might not have a choice for when you move in... some apartments require you to move in during a certain month since that's the beginning of their "leasing season". It's silly... but if you do have a choice, why not split the difference and move in in June?
  12. Best of luck! You should definitely relax before a big day... papers will still be there afterwards
  13. That's fantastic!!
  14. If it weren't for the Internet, I would not be applying to graduate school. Period. I wouldn't have known about REUs, or the GRE, or the many scholarships/fellowships I've had the privilege of receiving, because my school doesn't tell people about these things. Although I am working to change that... organizing an annual seminar just to say words, and stuff.
  15. Are you sure you aren't just thinking that because it's your one yes? What about all the other places? What was your top choice when you were applying?
  16. LOL! Parents COME ON, WHY DIDN'T YOU GET BETTER THAN 100%?!?!?!
  17. I'm sure your grandfather would be so proud! Yeah, every time I apply for something and say "I probably won't get it" my parents just say "you say that about a lot of things that you get!" Like, NO MOM. NINE HUNDRED PEOPLE APPLIED TO THIS GRADUATE PROGRAM. THEY PICK 20.
  18. I'm so surprised they haven't made a backpack that is ACTUALLY made to be used as a pillow yet... the "gradpack", or something.
  19. Yes, so much this! People make it sound like getting into graduate school is guaranteed - like I had just as much of a chance of getting into Cornell as I did getting into my local community college right after high school. My parents didn't go to college so I know they're proud but I don't think they realize just how much work it was... my professors here on the other hand were literally jumping up and down with me when I got into Cornell! I bet that if you're telling people who have gone through the process, you will be gazed at in awe! That's part of the reason why I love this community so much. You get it! The happiness I get from hearing that some of you got into your top choices is much larger than I would ever expect to feel about Internet strangers
  20. I actually am designing a short little seminar for my school to tell people about REUs, fellowships, GREs (things people at my school don't know about), and I'll be including your post in a hand-out more than likely.... but I'll include the disclaimer and won't identify you at all (not that I could anyway). Thanks so much
  21. OMG I'm so glad to hear this! I also travel with one of my teddies that I can't sleep without... they sure don't handle them gently, do they?
  22. Pro tip for everyone looking for cheap used furniture... Habitat for Humanity Restore. Nuff said.
