  1. I made a scrapbook of sentimental photos/pictures/letters, etc. I'm not the creative type so it isn't very "cutesy", but I can look through it and see kind letters written to me from past professors, or knickknacks given to me by people, or pictures with people I love... it always cheers me up on a sad day. Someone suggested keeping a "happy folder" as well, where they keep all of their "admissions good news". I'm thinking of making a page where I paste in all of the "Congratulations, you've been admitted to X" sentences.
  2. I do something similar... I use Google Drive as "my documents". It has the benefit of everything always being backed up, plus I can go back and forth between computers without having to e-mail myself anything. It's just a folder on my computer, like My Documents - there's no difference.
  3. Wow, you really got lucky in the PI department!! That's super nice!
  4. I did this, but during the visiting weekend (since I knew I was going to go there). The professor said he would talk to the group, and after a few of them ganged up on me at a bar that night, the professor e-mailed me to let me know that "consultations were complete" and that he'd love to let me work with him over the summer The worst they can do is say no, you might as well ask!
  5. Also, a humidity tip from Illinois... if its humid but not hot, your (automatic) air conditioner won't turn on automatically - so you might be dying but your AC's sitting there like "naww".... get a dehumidifier
  6. My parents just gave me their old desk chair that apparently had been used by their cats as a scratching post. Pros: SUPER comfy. Cons: Chair pieces all over my apartment
  7. Holy CRAP! It's a miracle anyone ever goes anywhere out of the country!
  8. Real talk though, when should I expect to hear back from grad schools? I accepted their offer over a month ago and I've heard from a professor congratulating me and making arrangements to work with him this summer, but nothing official. Nothing about enrollment, registering for classes, requests for final transcripts... nothing!
  9. I'm jealous! I wish so much that I were a morning person! They've just always seemed like the productive types to me... but then again, their whole day is finished before I'm out of bed, so that's probably why
  10. Really? I guess it depends on what a person enjoys... I'd rather spend the night at school with friends than sit at home questioning my life
  11. It's just one of those nights where work sort of sneaks up on you... fortunately there are others in this situation, so that makes late nights that much more fun
  12. Sigh... it's one of those nights where I really wonder if I want to do this for the next 6-8 years! At school until 3AM, and have to be back at 8...
  13. I'm starting a grad program in the fall, but I managed to hop into a professor's lab starting mid-May... I actually graduate on May 6, drive overnight and arrive in Ithaca May 7, and then start on May 16
  14. Anyone else thinking of getting a huge industrial-sized whiteboard to cover a wall of their apartment?
  15. I'm sitting on about 40k in loans right now... damn right it scares me!
  16. Fortunately all the physics majors who don't take their work seriously fail out after sophomore year, so after that it's smooth sailing But most of them don't give a damn about doing anything after graduation so I do look forward to grad school, where people care... Eeeee!
  17. Oh man! I wouldn't have made it this far without some camaraderie, working with other physics majors on homework and things, I don't know how you do it! Do you think it'll be strange being in a program with only your HOS people?
  18. This, too. I'm going to miss most of them, but some of them... sigh.
  19. But also realize that 90% of that opinion is just my hopes and prayers
  20. My guess is as long as you don't fail classes... who cares?
  21. I've never seen a post that so clearly reflects my every thought right now.
