  1. Oh yikes, I should clarify Cornell is NOT like that (hallelujah!), but many other top schools are unfortunately. It's one of the many reasons I decided to go to Cornell.
  2. For what it's worth, I was explicitly told by every advisor I've spoken to that graduate students should rent instead of buy. At least in my program, 2/3 of students will be kicked out, and you don't want to be stuck with a mortgage, so consider that.
  3. You guys work much faster than I do... Feelings of inadequacy yay! I sort of need to be micromanaged slightly, or nothing will get done. I'll spend a week trying to numerically solve an equation when my PI knows of a trivial method to do so.
  4. @hippyscientist Seems strange... I mean, there will always be lots of work to be done, sometimes you just need a day off! Sheesh!
  5. YES, THIS. I haven't even moved yet and I'm already homesick! I'm so glad this forum exists <3
  6. YES!!! I'm totally going to do things weirdly at first... You and I together
  7. Woohoo! Picking out a place is kind of fun, right? Are you going to have roommates? I'm moving in 2.5 weeks and the thought of packing everything up is so sad... plus, I found out that my advisor won't be at my graduation since he'll be in Germany. I'm much more sad than I care to admit... normally, the professors for your department line up and you shake their hand after getting your diploma, I was going to give him a big bear hug. Fortunately I have two advisors, maybe the other will be there I'm kind of worried about adjusting to a different professor-student dynamic. One of the students who graduated from here a few years ago gave me an exhaustive list of all the things he tried to do that apparently weren't normal at the new place. Do most students usually not grab drinks with their professor after an exam? Or call them for a ride to the airport?
  8. Happy April 15th, folks. One of my friends has been rejected from all places but one where he was put on a waitlist. Had he been accepted he would've heard back by the end of today... he didn't.
  9. The number of times I have sent AND received emails like this are so high that I hardly notice anymore. No shame
  10. Nice!! It sounds like you're ready for PhD work
  11. I know! But the blue had faded to a pukey green, so I decided to dye it back. And I had this idea on a Thursday, and since I have the patience of a toddler I of course had to do it RIGHT THEN. Aaaaand now it's pitch black for some reason!
  12. So I'm dying my hair back to brown... I have to teach a class in 7 hours, this is my second attempt, and I just found out that the hair dye I have on my hair right now has coconut oil in it, and guess who's allergic to coconut oil? So my whole head is red and burning, but I'm leaving the dye on just so that my hair isn't a pukey green in a few hours... Someone kill me!
  13. Yeah, here it's freshman-junior year, and to live with your parents they have to live within a 40-mile radius. And, of course, my parents live 42 miles away by their standards... ugh!
  14. I wish I were that lucky... went to an in-state "state school", got my tuition mostly paid for by scholarships (and everything paid for this year), but because my darn university required underclassmen to stay in the dorms (and buy a meal plan), I racked up >$30k in loans.
  15. Oh man, that sounds like a horrible situation... Sorry!
  16. Why not? There are plenty of sedatives available for pets for exactly this purpose.
  17. Well, the silly thing is, I don't pay it month-by-month, I pay a lump sum at the beginning of the year, so I didn't really "forget", I just paid for the wrong number of months, which is even more embarrassing!
  18. I thought I was doing so well financially... reserved a U-Haul, bought a cat tree (for the cats I don't even have yet, hahaha), took a long trip to use my telescope, etc. etc. etc.... and then today I got an email saying I forgot to pay rent. Seriously, I can't believe they let people like me be adults??
  19. My professors just told me that when I feel like killing myself while I'm in grad school, I can call them. I simultaneously feel loved and depressed.
  20. That's neat @Neist, a community garden plot is a brilliant idea. I just have a 2'x2' area filled with concrete that they call a patio
  21. YES. HOW DID I ACQUIRE THIS MANY CLOTHES?! And why is it whenever I purge my closet none of it seems to leave? A lot of it is really cute, too, but I just opt for tshirts usually
  22. HP's Instant Ink program has saved my butt... it's $3 a month to print 50 pages (that can roll over) a month, and after that it's $1 per set of 15 pages (or you can buy a bigger plan), and they mail you unlimited ink. It's the best.
  23. I just realized that in 4 weeks I'll officially have moved to Ithaca! I'M TERRIFIED
