Does what? You mean syncing the folder? Yeah, it puts a folder on your machine called "Google Drive" and whatever is in that folder automatically syncs to your Drive. So in my Google Drive folder, for instance, I have a folder for "Classes Spring 2016", and then in that a folder for each class, blah blah blah. What do you mean you work exclusively on Drive, if it's not that? You use Google Docs and such?

Maybe use Google Drive? If you have it on your computer, it automatically syncs folders to the Drive. I use Google Drive for all of my documents, photos, everything... so I can go to work and have it instantly appear in the matching folder on my work computer, and if my computer goes kaput I've lost nothing. Also, DAMN YOU ILLINOIS. The state is so poor that you can't even mail in your registration to get a new license plate sticker, you have to actually go to the DMV. Which would be great, if I weren't 1000 miles away!

@Neist I got most of my emails switched over using your advice. Thanks a bunch Although Google is still being stubborn on the last ~2000 emails, but that's a bug from what I can tell. In other news, I really need to start working next Monday so I can stop buying things for my new apartment. I just bought a bird feeder...

Wow!! There really is no time for you. I know some of that stuff can be sorted out on weekends but not the DMV! And UGH, INSURANCE. Regarding driving... I'm not sure what the process is for international students, but be sure to pick up a "Rules of the Road" book for whatever state you'll be in. Just memorize the statistics/numbers in there, that's exactly what's on the test. Frankly, a short turnaround was probably best, at least for me. A week ago I was just starting on my last exams, and now I've been here in Ithaca for 4 days. I left directly from graduation for New York, but I have a week here to get settled before I begin working on research. That's the way to do it, I think... no time to think about how nervous I am to move or how sad I am to say good-bye (because I thought I'd be an emotional wreck!), only time to do, not think. Also, on a side note, why are international students not allowed to be in the US (from what I understand) before August 1? Wouldn't they need the most time to get oriented and get things together?

Ha, same situation. I also had cats as a child but developed allergies when I moved away. Still getting one this weekend though. Who needs to be able to breathe anyway

I just moved for graduate school this past weekend and will be getting a cat soon. Like you, the cat will motivate me to be at home more often, and I hear often that graduate students need a furry critter to love on to keep them sane! I'm the opposite of you - not a dog person, and fortunately cats are fine with being left alone for long periods of time. If you were living alone and wanted to get a dog, I might advise against it due to lack of time to properly care for it, but if your partner is home more often (e.g., if he works a normal 9-5 job or something) then it sounds like a great idea! Just be sure you've thought out details such as how the dog will be let outside during the day; this is easy if you have a fenced yard, but non-trivial if you don't. Also, your title says puppy... that might be pushing it unless you or your partner will be home for a majority of the day to properly housetrain it. But in the end, it's your decision. Another factor to consider is the cost of having a puppy... and not just the cost of food/toys/materials. We had a black lab puppy who completely tore through all of our kitchen chairs, sofa, curtains, etc. Some of this was due to lack of training (see above) but some of it just comes with having a puppy. But all of this is just advice from someone who has owned a dog. Best of luck!!

I couldn't imagine moving my mattress/couch/table by myself! It quite simply wouldn't have been possible. Plus, my parents are packing pros, so most of my furniture wouldn't have even made it here without them. Yep, one go. I left right after graduation (actually, I got my diploma, acted like I was sitting back down for the rest of the ceremony then stealthily snuck out ) which was at 7PM, so I drove all night and ended up getting here about noon on Saturday. I love long drives (especially at night!) and with enough caffeine to fuel the world I was okay. Also... here's Murphy! He's a bit sneezy so the shelter is keeping him for another couple of days to make sure he's healthy, but I should have him this weekend!

The excitement will return I'm sure! I thought I'd have the same issue since my parents helped me move as well, and by the time they left I was ready for them to be gone (though I love them dearly), but you have no idea how useful it is to have someone else around to help! Even just small things like "hold the end of this table while I screw the legs in" or "stay here in case my landlord drops by while I go get groceries" make the move 100x easier. Yes, he may comment on the quality/cost of things you buy or the way you choose to do things, but even though I don't know your dad I'm sure he'll be thinking the whole time about how proud he is of you, so keep that in mind. And with all of the travelling adventures you've had, it might be fun to share them with him I didn't feel excited to move before I did so... I was just sad to leave my old apartment as well as my friends/family/professors in Illinois. Getting in the car to leave was hard. I didn't get excited until I was about 12 hours into my 14-hour drive to New York. And if you were excited before, just wait until you touch down on the tarmac in the US!!

Well... it's all over now. I said good-bye to my professors/friends, graduated (and just found out I officially have a 4.0!), drove to Ithaca and got all moved in, and my parents just left a few minutes ago to return home after helping me move. Everything went smoothly - on a scale from 1 to 10 in apartment niceness, mine is like a 12, DEFINITELY an upgrade from my previous place! I got a washer/dryer, Internet hooked up, and insurance/license all figured out, and even picked out a cat yesterday (though he's a bit sneezy, so it will be a few days before he is medically cleared). Honestly, I really hope that moving goes as well for the rest of you as it did for me! It definitely helped ease the homesickness which is what I was most worried about. Cheers to all of you!
