I don't know how you all have mastered the art of public transit. Tonight I sat in the back of the bus with my headphones in just chilling, when suddenly I was at the bus garage and the driver turned the lights off on the bus! He said he didn't see me. So I had to walk back to campus... my Fitbit said it was 5.5 miles. And THEN take another bus to my car. AND THEN drive home. Ah well, now I know

To live alone or not to...that is the question
Pink Fuzzy Bunny replied to bioarch_fan's topic in Officially Grads
I was in the same predicament as you, and I chose to live alone. Your first year you will be very stressed, you need to consider that a roommate may add to that. -
I'm only three weeks into "graduate school" and not doing so well... I feel I'm wasting my fellow grad students' time. Every time they turn around I'm either there watching them, or breaking something, or asking a dumbass question ("Are these sheets of copper the same thickness?" "Look at the label."). I just... agh! And I'm getting paid so well and I'm in a top-notch research group - literally the PI is a leading expert (and literally wrote the book) on nanostructures, yet I can't even put a tube into a furnace without breaking it. I know I came from a theory background so not knowing how to do experiments is sort of expected but at the same time, frustrating.

Oh yes, I've been using Mint to budget, but a real frustration is a lack of being able to budget annual expenses. I pay something like $2k a year on things that don't come up every month (especially now that I have to factor in travel money!). I've tried exhaustively to find something that is better but with no luck.

LOL, I do suppose that would work. It was a nice couple of hours between when I got my paychecks and when rent was automatically deducted from my account . Apparently the way that Cornell disperses the NSF fellowship is they give it all to you in one lump sum per semester. It's going to be a real test of my self-discipline.

I'm so glad there are others who don't watch movies! I also love TV shows, so not all hope is lost As far as cinema movies, I either wait until they are on Netflix to stream (I'm mooching off my sister's Netflix, it's the best!) or just torrent them. I also hate movie theaters.. too many loud people! But surely I'm not alone there

@Neist I do wish that I could have your, as Cat said, poise and purpose. Had I gotten an e-mail saying that it was a mistake, I would've been incredibly passive aggressive about it and complained to anyone who would listen. You are the person that I strive to be. Also, this is a weird question... but has anyone considered joining the Peace Corps after getting their PhD?

@sjoh197 I know, I normally don't kill spiders or bugs. I just scooch them onto a sheet of paper or something and put them outside. I tried to put that guy under a huge Tupperware container or garbage can and then do the same, but he just moved too fast and jumped really high. I'm sorry, but having a wolf spider that large when I have a small kitten is just too dangerous, and given the choice of spider vs. kitten, the decision was obvious. Wolf spiders are venomous, so I wasn't taking the chance. @Neist Nooooo!!!! That's really rough... I would be furious, and like others have said,, you're being amazingly calm about it!
