  1. Hahahahah! That's great though I feel better now!
  2. I don't know how you all have mastered the art of public transit. Tonight I sat in the back of the bus with my headphones in just chilling, when suddenly I was at the bus garage and the driver turned the lights off on the bus! He said he didn't see me. So I had to walk back to campus... my Fitbit said it was 5.5 miles. And THEN take another bus to my car. AND THEN drive home. Ah well, now I know
  3. I was in the same predicament as you, and I chose to live alone. Your first year you will be very stressed, you need to consider that a roommate may add to that.
  4. I laughed so hard at this, and that's exactly what I needed to hear Thank you guys for the encouragement... and on the bright side, when you guys start doing research in August and have these moments, I'll be hopefully on the other side to encourage you as well
  5. I'm only three weeks into "graduate school" and not doing so well... I feel I'm wasting my fellow grad students' time. Every time they turn around I'm either there watching them, or breaking something, or asking a dumbass question ("Are these sheets of copper the same thickness?" "Look at the label."). I just... agh! And I'm getting paid so well and I'm in a top-notch research group - literally the PI is a leading expert (and literally wrote the book) on nanostructures, yet I can't even put a tube into a furnace without breaking it. I know I came from a theory background so not knowing how to do experiments is sort of expected but at the same time, frustrating.
  6. Oh yes, I've been using Mint to budget, but a real frustration is a lack of being able to budget annual expenses. I pay something like $2k a year on things that don't come up every month (especially now that I have to factor in travel money!). I've tried exhaustively to find something that is better but with no luck.
  7. LOL, I do suppose that would work. It was a nice couple of hours between when I got my paychecks and when rent was automatically deducted from my account . Apparently the way that Cornell disperses the NSF fellowship is they give it all to you in one lump sum per semester. It's going to be a real test of my self-discipline.
  8. I got my last paycheck from my old university and my first paycheck from Cornell on the same day... *throws money everywhere*
  9. I have a friend that used one but she always had problems rolling it across grass/uneven pavement, and up stairs. Plus they're loud rolling across the floor.
  10. I'm so glad there are others who don't watch movies! I also love TV shows, so not all hope is lost As far as cinema movies, I either wait until they are on Netflix to stream (I'm mooching off my sister's Netflix, it's the best!) or just torrent them. I also hate movie theaters.. too many loud people! But surely I'm not alone there
  11. Nah, at some point it's just because I'm lazy. I hate watching movies so I keep putting it off
  12. I've never heard of it but I just googled it and it looks great! I'll have to add it to my list
  13. I'm 22 and have never seen Star Wars or Star Trek. Or Lord of the Rings, or Harry Potter. Am I banned?
  14. Try not to judge a show by its fans! Some of my favorite shows are ones that I avoided for years because of their fans
  15. I felt the same way about Doctor Who. There's only one episode I like (the Van Gogh one) but the rest of them are just meh. As a side note, I tried to make lasagna.. I was so proud of myself since I never cook. And now I remember why
  16. Oh yes I'm the same way. I need to do some more looking into it, but I... I hope I would have a shower?
  17. Hahaha the floppy hair. I'm trying to remember Marty... I remember Rory saying his name but I don't remember him
  18. Yeah, and honestly I liked Jess more than... didn't she date someone who was less of an asshole? I don't remember. Jess was a good guy deep down though. What are your feelings about Paris? I kind of loved her towards the end, she's hilarious
  19. I FORGOT ABOUT MICHELE. HE IS ALSO MY FAVORITE. I can't wait to hear his sarcastic comments again... and Jess was pretty great too although kind of an asswipe at first. And I forgot about that actor dying, it really is a shame.
  20. No apartment spiders coming your way. I didn't really care for Sookie either, I found her character a bit annoying. To be honest if they would've just cast Lorelai, Rory, and Luke, that would've been sufficient for me
  21. @Neist I do wish that I could have your, as Cat said, poise and purpose. Had I gotten an e-mail saying that it was a mistake, I would've been incredibly passive aggressive about it and complained to anyone who would listen. You are the person that I strive to be. Also, this is a weird question... but has anyone considered joining the Peace Corps after getting their PhD?
  22. @sjoh197 I know, I normally don't kill spiders or bugs. I just scooch them onto a sheet of paper or something and put them outside. I tried to put that guy under a huge Tupperware container or garbage can and then do the same, but he just moved too fast and jumped really high. I'm sorry, but having a wolf spider that large when I have a small kitten is just too dangerous, and given the choice of spider vs. kitten, the decision was obvious. Wolf spiders are venomous, so I wasn't taking the chance. @Neist Nooooo!!!! That's really rough... I would be furious, and like others have said,, you're being amazingly calm about it!
