  1. I hope you can stay in touch with any friends you made there hopefully?
  2. Oh yes, it was while I was at school, and the repairs are being paid for and I'm being given a rental car while mine is in the shop. Fortunately it all turned out okay so it's just a funny story!
  3. So some electrician repairing a light pole at the mall today dropped a screwdriver and it went through the roof of my car. Seriously, what are the odds?!
  4. I'm confused. What is a misdemeanor? To the best of my knowledge, simply driving with an out of state license - there's nothing wrong with that.
  5. If you set up gas/electric online, definitely call and confirm before you move in. I did not appreciate having no electric service when I first moved in all because I set up gas/electric but so did my landlord without telling me!
  6. I loooove when people ask me physicsy questions because people always ask about the interesting stuff. Y'know, they ask about gravitational waves, the Higgs boson, time travel, and other interesting pop sci topics.
  7. I'm curious, why is it cheaper for your parents to have fewer individuals on their plan? I'm not questioning that, just wondering why since it may also be true for my family.
  8. I quite agree, I'm usually in bed by 10. This was, in fact, the first bar I had ever been to, and quite hopefully the last
  9. I have nothing to add to all of the relationship talk. I was in State College for the past few days, for all of you moving there, you need to go to the Saloon and order a monkey boy. It's the best way to not remember your entire weekend.
  10. I'm curious, why are you considering registering your car? At least for me, insurance is far cheaper on my parents' plan, and to the best of my knowledge you do not need to have your car registered in the same state in which you claim residency.
  11. I totally need to learn to cook... I looked at the budgetbytes site and it all still seems so complicated. I have a crockpot that I've never even used hahaha
  12. Taking solid state and quantum mechanics. I'm also in a new subfield @eternallyephemeral, so we can definitely commiserate!
  13. I'm not sure I understand. If you are going to be walking from your bus stop and that does not defeat the purpose, why would driving defeat the purpose? It seems like a little "silliness" might be in order if you are concerned for your personal safety.
  14. I drive to the nearest bus station and then take the bus from there. For me, it's a mall. Is that an option for you, at least in the winter?
  15. Yes, I did that! I moved about two and a half months ago (WHOA... it sounds like so long ago now...) I really think it was a good decision at least for me. It's been great to meet grad students outside of my cohort, to get used to the town without hordes of undergrads everywhere, and to get paid It's nice to be able to begin the stress of graduate work without also the stress of being in a new town!
  16. My mom was also in denial... and then somewhere around the 3-month mark she accepted it, sent me cookies, and turned my old bedroom into a cat room
  17. Are you the youngest? Oldest? In the middle? Only child? I found that the relationship between me and my parents improved drastically when I moved out.
  18. Are you sure that your new POI will not ask your current one for a recommendation?
  19. I swear, I went to the right place by choosing Cornell. I haven't seen my mom since she was diagnosed with cancer but she has been referred to Memorial Sloan Kettering, which is a hospital in NYC, about 4 hours from me (as opposed to 13 hours home). Yay!!! The downside is that she spent a good chunk of this last week in the ICU and I can't really leave work and go home. I really moved at a crappy time!!
  20. Yeah, I definitely got lucky - I don't have to do research or TA my first year, so I'll be able to focus on my courses. And only two
  21. I'm so glad I won't be TAing, it sucked up so much of my time in undergrad, I can't imagine the stress it would bring upon me in grad school!
  22. I wouldn't advise asking the Internet about gifts for your significant other. However, I think that's a super cool watch
  23. No acceptance letter until July? Are you going to grad school outside the US? I noticed you're in physics so this seems strange
  24. @easybreezy Sorry, I meant doing research! Thus it is school itself
  25. That's good to hear. I was surprised at how cheap it is! When driving home in August I thought about staying overnight in a hotel but it would run me like $70 for a cheap one, OR I could stay with airbnb for $25... what kind of a decision is that
