  1. Why not take courses this fall and spring semesters that may transfer to your new school? Talk to your advisor about what classes may transfer.
  2. I do the same thing as spectastic, to an extent. I say that I only have one cat when I actually have two - it saves me $50 a month. Plus, they look alike, and one hides when someone enters the apartment Seriously though, I cannot advocate enough for adopting a cat (or two). Without my cats, I'd be depressed and lonely.
  3. I adopted two cats the summer before my program started. I just got back from a week-long trip. I do have an automatic feeder, but I hired a cat-sitter to play with them, clean the litterboxes, and refill the water fountain. It's absolutely doable. However, I would recommend getting two so they entertain each other while you're gone, or get an older cat.
  4. Unfortunately if you get an iPhone 4, it won't be able to upgrade to the last few iOS versions which is required by many apps. As long as you hold off on updating apps and are okay with the (I think small) loss of functionality, I totally agree that the iPhone 4 is great since it's probably free (or maybe even the 5 is free now.)
  5. Ughhhh... I was so excited to go home for fall break this weekend, but I caught a cold, and while my mom is on chemo getting a cold could send her to the hospital, so I'm stuck here
  6. If you live on the same floor with a bunch of people, stuff like that is bound to happen. it'll be a funny memory at some point, I promise! Also, I'd like to make a shout-out to hamburger helper.
  7. I'm glad ot hear that you're doing well in courses... can I borrow some of that? Doing well in one of mine, but the other one is killing me
  8. Oh I haven't had one yet! A couple of weeks to go Congrats! Also, how did you solve your dry erase board dilemma???
  9. Right??? I like to pretend I can do my homework while watching some new shows that just returned for the fall, but it's a lieee.....
  10. Right?? It's hard to believe that 6 months ago we were still waiting to hear back from schools and starting to make decisions. I feel like I've been here forever! Also that's a lot to take on your first year. I applaud you.
  11. Same here! I just wish I got to spend more time with them! I don't know how people have free time!
  12. That's actually super interesting! For some reason I and the other girl in the class never ask questions but to each other, for that reason.
  13. My quantum class uses Piazza, which is an online forum where classmates can ask questions and other students and the professor can answer them. Fortunately you can post anonymously, but I've recently been adapting the writing style of each question so that no one thinks the dumb questions are all coming from the same person
  14. If I don't fail my first exam next week it will be: 1) a miracle, and 2) a huge cause for celebration
  15. I'm going to agree with you. I made a huge jump, going from a university that's ranked >250th to one that's ranked in the top 5. My problem is 15% impostor syndrome, and 85% being severely underprepared. I'm with you... I hope it gets better for both of us.
  16. @janetjanejune Yay! I'm glad things are going well for you. And setting up a new place is half the fun
  17. I mean, my prescription is pretty high but it's not crazy. I was just wanting to pay less. I totally didn't know that Sears and JCP sold prescription eyeglasses, I'll have to check them out! I did know that Costco does them but they aren't able to get my prescription either. Sigh.
  18. Gah! I thought I had finally found an eyeglasses retailer online that carries my prescription (Zenni), but it turns out that they only have 3-6 frames online that do, and they're all pretty tacky-looking. I was so excited after having ordered frames until I got that call
  19. Here's an obvious question: what would you do instead, if you left your internship?
  20. YEAH SERIOUSLY!!! And the ones that are huuuuge and go on the wall are so heavy they can't be held up by Command strips (unless you use 6 packs, like I did ) Whatever you do, don't get that peel-and-stick white board stuff or the whiteboard paint, no matter HOW easy or cheap you think it looks.
  21. h see I guess I maybe work about the same as most of you... I do work 12-14 hours a day but only spend maybe 4-6 hours at school on the weekends so it all balances out. Though I do need to stop working on homework at home...
  22. Same, we also got assigned to mentors. I responded to the first few emails ("when will you arrive in Ithaca?" "about three months ago") but I'm not entirely sure of their purpose. Fortunately not nearly as many meetings here, just a weekly group one. Don't you hate when a meeting can just be accomplished with a single e-mail?
  23. I really need to working on knowing when to give up and go home. I was at school for 15 hours yesterday and though I did that regularly in undergrad for some reason it's really wearing on me now. I also had to sleep in the office last weekend, but not due to work. My car had broken down (a mouse ate some cables in the engine?? Seriously?!) in Ithaca, and since I live out of town I was screwed. Eventually a friend came to get me but not for 4-5 hours or so. Gah!
  24. From what I hear, I don't think 10-12 hours is too much for a first year, especially if you count time spent studying at home.
