  1. Thanks Neist xD I needed that I think this is the first time in awhile that I've intentionally turned in homework that was incomplete. But I don't have the 235923852935 hours to figure out this problem!
  2. This. In fact, I would venture to say that most people in my program have always been so focused on "intellectual pursuits" that they also feel "behind" socially. I know I do.
  3. Mine is too, which is great! I've never really been a part of a group before - in undergrad it was just myself and two professors generally, and in REUs I was usually pretty separated from the grad students. I love that in my lab we talk about everything from physics-y things to kittens to death metal to cheesecake.
  4. Yeah pretty much! I told my labmates my revelation yesterday and they looked at me like "...yeah?"
  5. You know, there is an awful lot of advice given in this forum about the importance of having a hobby you enjoy, of being social every once in a while, of sometimes not finishing homework so that you can maintain your sanity, etc. I never understood this... until now. If you try to do everything to the best of your ability, you will fizz out pretty quickly, I'm sure.
  6. I agree. I have sold my soul to the gods of Google, but if they could just make Drive and Calendar work better....
  7. On the computer with the Drive folder, in the system tray (assuming it's a PC) you should see the Drive symbol. Hover over that with your mouse and you should see either "files synced" or "1 out of 29 files syncing" or something. That will help diagnose the problem
  8. YES. This! I'm paying twice as much as I would with a roommate, but I get to come home and just... be.
  9. Minimally! There's ONE bus that goes from my apartment complex (only one within like 3 miles) to campus in the morning (6:45am), and ONE that goes from campus to my complex at night (at around 5). If I need to go anywhere else or travel on the weekends, I'm toast! And I'm about 20 miles and a pretty rough hill from campus, so biking isn't really super ideal. @sjoh197 I know that feeling! They're always like "ay, let's go to (insert Asian restaurant here)!!!" but having a pretty severe airborne peanut allergy I can't even go into some of those restaurants. Can you at least go and get soda or something??
  10. New development, it is not toast! I had a cylinder misfire that happened to be at the exact same time as an oil leak I don't know how I'm going to be commuting in the next week.... sigh.
  11. I'm stealing this quote, sorry what a day! I live about 20 miles from school which has never been a huge issue, until today. My car has an oil leak which I didn't know about until I had driven about 30 miles on it... with no oil. RIP engine. RIP wallet. RIP car. And RIP my soul when I almost had to walk 20 miles home... fortunately a labmate came to pick me up about halfway there.
  12. YES. The people who set like five billion alarms like 5 minutes apart. Seriously, are you less tired after the tenth one than you are after the first one?
  13. I'm guilty of this... but my alarm is a light alarm and not a noise alarm, so if I just lay there for a few minutes while the light is on the brightest setting it helps me be more awake.
  14. Oh mine definitely still isn't done. 25 hours and counting! @MarineBluePsy If... if you've never used Command hooks, did you never have anything hanging on your walls in rental places? I have millions of 'em. I used 50 just to hang up a really heavy whiteboard in my living room (if they ever fail, I'm gonna have a bad time!)
  15. First homework assignment and I'm already needing some serious alcohol therapy
  16. Meeting up with a girl today to finish up some homework - hard homework that we're both totally clueless on. And she wants to meet in coffee shops, Asian restaurants, bars... like, can we meet in a library?!?!?!
  17. Eventually your standards for thoroughness will drop. This usually corresponds to your students' grades approaching a Gaussian distribution and your time spent grading dropping significantly
  18. Awesome!! How long are rotations there?
  19. It does feel nice to get into the groove of things, doesn't it? For instance, there's a certain peace around staying up until 5am doing quantum homework. I guess it's all in what we get used to, but I feel like being an eternal student is just the route for me
  20. I kind of regret getting involved in research so early. All of the other first years are going hiking on Monday, but I'll be stuck in the lab all day
  21. Y'all are so dedicated... a year ago I was preparing for the physics GRE but was too lazy to start working on grad school applications until November
  22. Seriously! I can't believe that six months ago I wasn't really even sure where I was going.
  23. I'm really liking the atmosphere here among the grad students. I've had some really great conversations with people here, though I don't really spend time with my cohort. That being said, today the "omgsomuchwork" truck hit me with full force. Yay!
  24. Have you tried going to the social events, or striking up conversation with new people?
