Advice for a lost first-year MA student
Pink Fuzzy Bunny replied to franc109's topic in Officially Grads
Yes, in fact this is me right now. I am attending graduate school in the fall for physics (and actually started about a month ago already) and now I am thinking that maybe physics isn't for me and perhaps I would prefer to go to medical school. Since I'd need to go back and take several undergrad courses to do med school, I'm hoping the feeling passes. Seriously though, that's what life is all about. You try something, realize it's not for you, and then switch. It is never too late to switch, especially if you are (as I presume you are) in your 20s or early 30s. Maybe give it a go, and then decide. -
It may be covered by your dad's home insurance! Mine was covered under my parents' when I was in undergrad, but as a grad student I had to buy my own. I think this is because the insurance company my parents use is local only, so they don't have coverage out here in New York. Definitely look into it.

How did you travel to grad school?

I chose to drive the 16 hours in one go, while my parents followed me the following day with a U-Haul. IMO you will probably want to split yours into two days of driving... do you have anyone helping you move who would be willing to tow a trailer? -
Thanks! She has a skin problem that she's being treated for so it'll be a few weeks, but I'm excited! Honestly, the best thing you can do is try, y'know? Some cats are made better with another cat present. Worst case scenario, most shelters will let you bring back a cat if things don't work out within 30 days or so.

@MarineBluePsy Wow! No wonder you are overwhelmed.. the accident alone with nothing else piled on top of it is a seriously traumatic experience that will take awhile to recover from. I'm very glad that you are okay. @rhombusbombus Man... that sucks. Hopefully she isn't too messy so that you can just keep your own space and share common areas by necessity and mostly keep to yourself?

@MarineBluePsy Your computer would likely be fine in the trunk, but like sjoh said, I'd keep your hard drive up with you (unless it's a laptop, then it's fine). I like to take my computerized telescope out into the middle of the desert, sometimes in the middle of the day for solar viewing, so I did a lot of research on the safety of electronics in that sort of environment. I think the general consensus is that unless you're leaving it sit out in the sun for days at a time, you'll be okay. Also, bubble wrap the hell out of everything! I'm glad I didn't have to ship anything but I've seen how they treat packages at shipping centers... *shudders* And no matter WHAT you do, do NOT mark a box as fragile. That means that instead of the conveyer belt, they'll have people carrying your boxes. Conveyer belt vs. careless worker, guess which one drops boxes and kicks them around more frequently?

Hahahaha! Okay I laughed out loud at this. And thanks for the encouragement @janetjanejune. I removed the post that I made (mom was diagnosed with cancer) since posting that stuf fon an anonymous Internet forum is a bit weird. Also, @Effloresce try using Mint! It's an app that I use that tracks your expenses and also is used to make budgets. That's about the extent of my budgeting skills though Sjoh posted some great tips a few pages back though.
