  1. My sister (finishing up her PhD in atmospheric science) just sent me this: http://legogradstudent.tumblr.com/ You NEED to check out that tumblr as a grad student. You will laugh, you will cry...
  2. @janetjanejune This is a dumb question and I don't mean to be offensive but I'm genuinely curious... what's a non-confirming committee?
  3. I feel like in that job, you won't be overweight for too long
  4. An excellent point. Have you considered getting something like a smart lock? It's a mechanical device that goes onto a deadbolt lock, and can be controlled from your smartphone.
  5. Have you considered getting a magnetic box to go underneath your car? Maybe keep a spare key in there.
  6. Why do undergrads take up the entire damn sidewalk?
  7. @MarineBluePsy Definitely done those too! Paid for gas in all change yesterday, in fact. Had to fill up a rental car before returning it and lost my wallet though I totally thought I was the only one who has done the Tupperware thing... it's still a running joke in my family But I have to ask... what is your Craigslist adventure?? Never had a problem there.
  8. The gym here doesn't even have a running track ????
  9. I mean... I was too prepared. I had printed out my schedule in early June, not realizing that classes would switch rooms several times over the following few months. I sat in an algebra class instead of Calc II for two weeks because neither the professor nor the syllabus had said the course name on the first day of class, and the rooms had been switched. Life lessons! Although I'm a stereotypical millennial I'm going to agree with @Neist. You haven't really lived until you've had your laundry scattered all over a major road because the garbage bag tore while crossing the street to carry it between car and dorm. Although I now think back and laugh at the memory of a car driving by and running over my bath towel, it sure would've been nice to be coddled a bit
  10. I have the opposite problem - I also get on at the very start of the route but no one else gets on with me. And by the time the bus gets to school, there's so many people on the bus that I can't get off! But coming home, I understand you - and I've also learned that I'm not balanced enough to stay upright if there's nothing to hold onto on the bus So I've started parking near school and walking in. My fitbit tells me that it's about a mile and that I gain 600 feet of elevation. Can't wait for winter
  11. I'm so glad that I'm not the only one who feels this way. The busses are so jam-packed with undergrads and it annoys me to no end!
  12. @hippyscientist For a second, I thought you meant that you got the number 4 tattooed on yourself I agree though - I've been seeing a lot of tattoos but they're all pretty lame (though I shouldn't judge, maybe there is a good reason for some of them). A lot of wrist infinity symbols, kinda-cheesy motivational one-liners on the arm, etc.
  13. @rhombusbombus It's like the satisfying clickety clack of a keyboard... times A MILLION.
  14. Today I learned that this week I'll be getting my entire stipend for the semester in one check. Can't wait to set aside 30% for taxes!!
  15. They're really good at making Prime so convenient too. I think this semester I am going to save up for an Amazon Echo, which means that I'll be able to lay in bed and say "Alexa, order scrunchy cat toys!" and they'll show up at my door two days later. SO DANGEROUS
  16. Yes! Getting Prime was the worst mistake of my life. Cat toys? Textbooks? A wake-up light (which, BTW, HIIIIIGHLY recommend)? They sell everything! The downside is apparent if you read stories from the people who work in their warehouses. Miserable.
  17. You had mentioned something a few pages back about getting a car, right? Is that a thing?
  18. @Neist I'm sure you'll be a fine TA. If you actually care, it's pretty hard to flub it up!
  19. Well... start of the semester means staying late, staying late means no evening jogs which means... now I have to run in the morning! Did it for the first time this morning, and let me tell ya... it's gonna be a long 6-10 years!
  20. Yes. Very, very flat. Even living in Illinois my entire life did nothing to prepare me for how flat our damn country was.
  21. I wish that were an option, but I'll be building my own. I really like being able to pick and choose graphics cards, processors, SSDs, etc.
  22. I'm really jealous of you guys. I've been saving up for a new computer and hope to get one in time to put it together over winter break. My PC Part Picker list looks a lot like Danger_Zone's, but no mechanical keyboard - my cats walking on it would drive me up the wall. Fortunately No Man's Sky has been running okay on my current PC so that satiates me for now!
  23. Also having a barbecue today! I'm pretty excited. I've met a few people in my cohort and they're pretty awesome (MarineBluePsy worried me).
  24. Wow @sjoh197 that's the complete opposite of ours! SO much food (and most of it was REALLY GOOD).
  25. Doing random roommates during first year of grad school? That's a bold move, Cotton.
