  1. I will be attending Northwestern!
  2. I have declined: Rutgers
  3. Unsolicited W&M comment from someone who declined: they have a great program and some awesome people, but to me it was a very niche fit. I'm not interested in early American, so the program just doesn't work for me even though they have some really great faculty. Also, the cohort this year is so small (6-8).
  4. I have also declined: University of North Carolina-Greensboro, MA And I sent the letter today to decline: The College of William & Mary, PhD
  5. I have officially declined: University of Delaware, PhD University of North Carolina-Charlotte, MA
  6. If it will help I'll also post once I notify the respective schools
  7. I got an acceptance from Rutgers about a week ago from DGS as well as a letter in the mail. Not sure if they're finished or not though.
  8. I know this question has probably been asked multiple times, but what's more important fit or rank?
  9. Hi. I got an email from the DGS for History that I had been recommended for admission along with funding info and their invitation weekend. It said the formal admissions letters for the university would be coming "next week or so." Hope that helps!
  10. From any school in particular? I heard from Northwestern on a Saturday (website), the graduate coordinator (Monday), and my POI (Wednesday). And from W&M, I got a call from the graduate coordinator the week before I received an email from my POI. So I wouldn't lose hope just yet.
  11. Congrats to the Michigan, Yale, and Princeton admits!!!! (Also, any other schools I forgot to mention). Turns out my school's email server is down, so I guess it's a good thing I wasn't expecting to hear from any grad school today.
  12. Did anyone apply to Rutgers? If so, have you heard anything.
  13. @emiliajulia: I've already bought one ticket. I know it's early, but the ticket was ridiculously cheap. I'm giving precedence to whoever contacts me first, but that works for me because i'm not actually supposed to hear from one school until after my invitation weekends anyway. I do have one on 2/27 though and the price is already climbing. If the school is a top choice I'd recommend booking. If you're not sure about it then you could wait. Or by airline insurance?
  14. I'm not sure which schools' recruitments you're going to. The two I have gave me a set amount they're willing to reimburse. For ex: Northwestern is $300 for travel expenses and they provide lodging. However, they also have a skype option, so maybe see if your school will do that?
  15. I know it's early, and if this is the wrong place for this feel free to remove it. I was wondering if anyone who has been admitted had started to get invites to open houses, and how you're deciding about which ones to attend. Is it better to go to each invitation weekend (since the price is being reimbursed) and make a decision after, or only go to the one you're most sure you want to go to? Also, what sorts of questions are good to ask at these events? And dress code?
  16. Congrats to the Berkely admit and the Wisconsin-Madison admits!!!! does anyone know how important it is to attend an open house after admission? I'm supposed to go to one to (meet the cohort and find out more about the program) but it's the same day as a research conference I've signed up to do. I've spoken to the coordinator about getting in touch with faculty and grad students, but I'm wondering if it would be better to simply pull out of the conference and attend the open house.
  17. Thanks!!! The person I spoke to said they were sending their recommendations to the grad school today. The official emails will be arriving this week. He didn't say anything about if I was the first or the last call, so I'm not sure but the impression he gave was that they had only concluded their final meeting recently. So there's still hope!!!!! Good luck and hope this helps
  18. I had an interview like that. I was contacted by a POI but there was a 2nd person sitting in the call. Most of the questions were directed towards my research (it sort of felt like a defense), and also about my interests in the field. A couple of odd questions: what challenges do you foresee in pursuing a job in academic history considering the current climate/job market? What types of sources do you think would be useful in your studies if you couldn't rely on formal essays and newspapers? They didn't take any notes and they didn't ask me any questions about the university. That said you can't be sure what to expect of what questions they'll ask. They will ask you if you have questions so I had 7 written down. They also might accidentally answer some of your questions so have more than one
  19. Someone got accepted at UC Berkeley. Congrats! Congrats to all the Northwestern admits!
  20. @JTE - Fellow Emory applicant: was told by the department that they might be another 6 weeks in coming out with decisions. Also, congrats to the NYU admit (didn't see that earlier)!!!!!!!!!!!
  21. My plan for the coming weeks: delete all of my passwords from my computer's memory that way I can't constantly check to see if decisions have come in!
  22. @DGrayson: THANKS! Had interview today. They asked lots of questions about the current research I'm doing. One of the things I have going against me (I think), and something they were hinting at is my pursuing a PhD directly out of undergrad without a Master's degree. Has anyone else noticed this?
  23. I have a Skype interview tomorrow. I was told it would be 20 minutes. Is this what I should focus on more than trying to explain why their school is a good fit?
  24. Hey! I know I'm a bit late to this whole process. I've been reading this forum (and the admissions page) religiously for the past few days, but I just waited until now to introduce myself. This is my first time applying, and I've applied to 3 MA programs and 4 PhD programs.
