I would try to find programs that only look at your last sixty credit hours to try and offset the lower overall GPA. A word of caution on retaking classes: if the schools you are applying to use CSDCAS, they will not factor in those grade replacements when calculating your GPA. Use a program like Magoosh to get your GRE as high as you can. Write a thoughtful SOP and try to find letter writers who really know you well and whole heartedly recommend you. It's hard to say what anyone's chances are; application cycles are norm-referenced. Best of luck to you!!

3500 was easier for me, but I have an MA in Linguistics. I took two classes last semester and am in three now while working full time. I took 2500 in the fall and am in 3100 now! I have enjoyed them both and have managed A's in both. I think it just requires organization and self-motivation. You can do well taking them simultaneously!

I was accepted but declined before the deadline. I emailed at least three administrators key questions that I needed to know the answer to in order to make an informed decision. Two weeks and several unanswered phone calls, voicemails, and emails later, I officially declined. -
I have kind of been stressing about this myself. I have a heavy load of prereqs this summer, and I feel like I have to make all A's to keep my spot in the program...but I feel uncomfortable asking about the minimum grade. I don't want my program to think I am looking to scrape by instead of trying my best.

I did research on Clinical Methods Courses when I was accepted into UNCO's online program. The program I ended up attending doesn't require it, which I am happy about because I found one with an almost identical title and description at Sacred Heart and they said it wasn't an appropriate equivalent. I sent this for other possible equivalences, but decided not to attend before I heard back. You might find it helpful as a starting point. Although this seems a trickier one to match and I am not sure any of these would work. Utah State University Idaho State Longwood University Unco is on the far left. Describe and implement procedures for evaluation and diagnosis in speech-language pathology as well as psychometric considerations. 2. Develop awareness of the relationship between speech, language and communication. 3. Discuss the implications and utilization of evaluation information for differential diagnosis, determining a prognosis, making referrals, and implementing therapeutic programs. 4. Describe multicultural considerations in the diagnostic and treatment process. 5. Generate professional written work related to the field of speech language pathology. 6. Discuss materials and techniques used in therapy. 7. Understand various ways in which positive reinforcement can be used to encourage appropriate target behavior. 8. Be familiar with types of data collection in tracking outcomes in therapy. 9. Demonstrate understanding of health, safety and confidentiality issues related to work as a speech-language pathologist. Online Pre-reqs !!
SouthernDrawl replied to overthinker101's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I only had one prereq done when I applied. I got into a few schools, but at least half had a leveling track. If you have no interest in a leveling track, I might at least try to finish 4 or 5 before applying. I am in three classes now and take five in the spring. You need to look for programs that are ok with you finishing before you begin the program, not at time of application. If I could have finished more before applying, I would have! -
Hi there, I don't really have any advice on the appeal situation. I haven't heard of anyone doing it, and am not sure how it might affect a program's perceptions of a candidate. However, I will say that I was an out-of-fielder who asked very specific questions about prerequisite restrictions before applying. I will have finished 4 by the semester's end and have 4-5 left to take this summer. I emailed programs and directly asked if they would consider someone with that amount of prereqs finished. Some said no (i.e. told me they would only consider me if I had 1 or 2 left to take, very cut and dry). I applied to ones that seemed flexible or offered a leveling track. I got into each program I applied to (although I did not apply to some schools that I thought could be a good fit because of the aforementioned prerequisite limitations). I will be attending a program that does not offer a leveling track, but will let me finish 15 CSD hours over the summer. I guess what I would say is, revisit the sites and see if they have any language that very specifically limits candidates with several prereqs left. I would think this language would mean the programs have black-and-white restrictions here that are just as steadfast as their GRE or GPA cutoffs. I might then email programs who do not explicitly preclude students without most prereqs completed, but would not use the word "appeal," and just express my continued interest, academic progress, and hope that one day I can be a part of their program. I don't know about unfilled spots, but maybe you can be placed on the waitlist? Sorry if this isn't helpful. Best of luck!

I have a spreadsheet I made a long time ago, and it shows the cost at 45,000. It isn't itemized, and I may have included the cost of my prerequisites, but still good to know we were in the same ball park! -
Getting A Master's Degree in a Related Field
SouthernDrawl replied to edardi1's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
MA in Writing and Linguistics here. I 100% agree. Do I think it really boosted my app? Not specifically. But it did get me a job (three years of relevant experience) which I think did a lot for an out-of-field candidate. I would not have gotten the degree if my sole motivation had been to directly apply for another degree though. When you say academic boost, do you mean your GPA? My program was around 36 hours, while my BA was close to 130. Mathematically, it may not have as much of an effect unless you are looking at a last 60 program? -
Options if I don't get in?
SouthernDrawl replied to courtney1's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Are you wanting to REtake coursework you didn't perform well in the first time around? Someone should correct me if I misunderstood this, but doesn't CSDCAS overlook repeated courses in it's GPA calculation? If you aren't trying to do replacents, I agree with others. Only take any classes that are missing prereqs for you (if there are any). -

Yea, I feel like more people will start cropping up as the deadline draws nigh! Feel free to join up until the part-time group is established if you find it will be at all helpful! -

Yes, this would be the class of 2018. I thought since we will be doing different things at different times, the part time folks might want their own group? -

I mean, I guess I can't provide any insight that isn't available on the website, but the course sequence I attached might help. Also, this is from a blog post Infound from a student in 2012: " Did you work while you were in the program? How did you fit it in? I did stay employed throughout graduate school. This only worked because my job was as an SLP Assistant. In the first year, many of my classmates stayed employed in other careers. However, in order to complete the externships, one must either be an Assistant in a district with enough flexibility to provide for 2 placements, or work part-time outside of the hours when the externship will be completed. Even though it was possible, it wasn’t easy! I worked until 4pm most days, came home and cooked dinner, spent time with the family, and managed bedtime for the younger two most days. Starting at 8pm, I turned on “student mode”, and spent the next 3-5 hours in class and completing reading, assignments, and projects. Depending on the workload and the time in the semester, I went to bed between 11pm-1am. On the weekends, I would spend at least 5 hours a day on work, up to 8 or even 10 when there were several projects due or right before finals." I remember the website advised that working full time wouldn't be feasible, but I don't remember it advising against part time. One last thing might be to consider time zone differences: if classes stream live in the evenings, what time might that be for you, etc.? Sorry if this isn't all that helpful! -

I am encouraged by this response. The website made the process seem very independent, but this seems quite collaborative! Do you think it is too soon to start putting feelers out about possible placements? Since she said they start helping at the start of the program, I am wondering if I should start reaching out to folks. If it makes you feel any better, I am from a rural area of Tennessee, light years smaller and more sparsely populated than your area. I still remain fairly confident I will be able to wrangle placements within a reasonable driving distance! I have already applied to WKU as a UG non degree seeking student to finish up all the classes through WKU that I can. In hindsight, I wish I had done them all here. They're so reasonably priced. -

Man, I wish there was something like that! If there is, they haven't notified us yet. Even a virtual one would be so amazing. I have many questions! -

If you get a response about that, could you let me know what he says? I am operating under the same belief, just want to be sure! Another good thing about Chem 1010 at USU is that you can take this self paced version where it is soooo flexible and you can start/finish at your own pace (within the semester timeframe obviously). -

No lab at Utah State. At least the section I took. All of your exams must be proctored though. For me, they were killers, but I managed an A. The professor is so wonderful and responsive; it was as good of an experience as it could've been! Only 4 dollars to send the transcript! They do it through a third party. I'm still worried about that "by July 31st" provision. No way my final grades will post by then. It will be the first or 2nd week in August. -

Basic Sciences (additional requirements for admission to the graduate program) The 2014 ASHA certification guidelines require applicants to have 3 college credits in each of the following areas: biological sciences, physical sciences, social/behavioral sciences, and statistics. If you need coursework in these areas, Western Kentucky University will work with you to identify appropriate online general education courses that will fulfill these requirements. Please note that many graduate programs now require that the Physical Science course be a Chemistry or Physics course. You are encouraged to look specifically at the requirements of graduate programs you will apply to determine their requirements for both basic sciences and CSD prerequisites. This is from their site! It says 3 hours each, which would mean a lab is not required. My biology class had a lab, but my Chem did not. -

I don't see any course on the prerequisite list called diagnostic procedures. Am I missing it? I I want to make sure I have all my bases covered so nothing prevents me from starting graduate coursework in the fall! I did Chemistry last semester through Utah State. Tough course, but pretty reasonably priced! -

I spoke with Dr. Shackleford today, and WKU does let admitted grad students take courses in their program! There are 2 classes offered this summer: Assessment of Communication Disorders and Audiology. I'll be taking both!! -
