Admission on the west coast?
steveshooman replied to Gabby's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I agree with the above; in fact, many CSUs and even private universities will straight up tell you that a certain number of spots are reserved for their own undergrads. I've heard as high as 60%. -
Speech Language Pathology graduate course requirements
steveshooman replied to nichole's question in Questions and Answers
I would second the recommendation to check the websites of individual programs you are interested in attending. All of the California schools I was interested in included classes in their undergraduate programs that USU did not; therefore, to be a competitive applicant I had to take additional courses outside of USU. I ended up needing to take three additional classes to be a strong applicant against California students: Voice and Resonance Disorders Fluency Disorders Neuroanatomy/Neurophysiology -
Waitlist/Rejections. ADVICE PLEASE

Both of these things are true, but I got into Sac State as a first-time grad applicant and an outside student. It's worth a shot! -
Waitlist/Rejections. ADVICE PLEASE

I just wanted to mention that if GRE scores are really the sticking point, there are school that either don't require them at all or don't pay attention to them if your GPA is above a certain point. I'm in California, and I know of at least two programs that work like this: CSU East Bay and CSU Sacramento. It might be worth a try to focus on applying to schools that don't use GRE as the determining factor. -
Requirements vary from state to state, because ASHA doesn't license SLPAs. Some states require a license, some don't, and some don't have SLPAs at all. California basically requires either a Bachelor's Degree in SLP/CommDis + 70 SLPA fieldwork hours or graduation from an accredited Associate's Degree program for SLPA (of which there are only a few). I'm currently completing an accredited SLPA program, which has fieldwork as the last class and requires a minimum of 162 fieldwork hours for graduation. California SLPAs generally make upwards of $18/hour, depending on location and whether it's private practice or school districts.

SLP California Applicants Fall 2016
steveshooman replied to SLPBethany's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Just declined my offer to Sacramento State, as I've accepted my admission to University of the Pacific/UOP. Good luck to those on the waitlist at Sac State, and congratulations to those who will be accepting their offers! -
I can only imagine that people: 1) Buy things they don't really need and never get around to wearing them, 2) Are given clothing that is not their taste/size and don't have a way to return the items, or 3) Some other option that I haven't considered that would explain new clothing going into a donation bin. Either way, I'm the beneficiary and am happy to see this phenomenon continue!

I know that the topic has kind of moved on, but I've found a lot of high-quality women's business casual and professional clothing at thrift stores. Things still with tags on, in like-new condition, from brands like Ann Taylor, designers carried at Anthropologie, Banana Republic, J. Crew, etc. Most of my nicest clothing (the kind that gets compliments) was purchased for under $10 an item by careful searching of the racks in periods when I had more time than money. Just a suggestion for those finding this thread now, like me!

Anyone else commit already??
steveshooman replied to Lexy_21's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I committed immediately after attending the accepted students' open house at my #1 choice (University of the Pacific/UOP); this was an easy decision, because I'm in a state where funding is non-existent for this field. I also wanted to give someone a chance to get off the waitlist at the other school I got into (SFSU), so I let that school know immediately that I had accepted another admission. The grad school application process is so nerve-wracking that I feel like we should acknowledge and respect the emotional/gut feeling part of making an admissions decision. -

@LauraV CSUS is in East Sacramento, which is the area of Sacramento I would live in if I moved to the City proper (I live in a suburb). I'm sure students who attend there can speak to the rental situation better than I, but it's a nice area and still fairly walkable, depending on which part you live in.

SLP California Applicants Fall 2016
steveshooman replied to SLPBethany's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
@kkasza Thanks so much! I'm so excited and know how much it means to get in. I'll be hoping on your behalf that there are four other people who decline SFSU after me! Yes, I posted on the results page as well. I spent so much time there myself that I figure it's the least I could do for others applying this year and those to come. -

@kkasza I just declined my conditional offer of admission from SFSU, as I've accepted and enrolled at UOP. I'm sure there are others doing likewise--best of luck to you! -

@Jkc25 I'm sure we saw each other, too (it was a pretty small group!). I am on Facebook and that's a great idea, @SLPBethany. I also received a rejection from East Bay, as did another student I spoke to at the Open House on Friday. -
USU Post-Bach (Canadian Student)
steveshooman replied to hopetobeSLP's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Just wanted to chime in and say that I completed USU's 2nd Bachelor program in August 2015 and was accepted to a brick-and-mortar grad school for Fall 2016. I not only feel well-prepared, but an admissions committee thought so, too :). I had students in my classes from Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, etc. International students are definitely welcome. -

@Jkc25I just accepted yesterday. I haven't heard back from all the schools I applied to, but Pacific was my top choice to begin with. I attended the open house session on 3/18, and my decision was made. Can't wait for August! Pretty much everyone else I spoke to at the open house said they hadn't decided yet whether to accept or not. I honestly have no idea who my cohort is going to be! -
Utah State Online Post-Bach and Acceptance
steveshooman replied to caligirl88's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Posting this here for anyone searching later: I graduated from USU in 2015 with my 2nd bachelor's (4.0 GPA) and was accepted to University of the Pacific today for the Fall 2016 admission cycle. I received a rejection from CSU Chico and haven't heard yet from the three other schools I applied to (SFSU, CSU East Bay, CSU Sacramento). The CSU Chico rejection wasn't a surprise, as I was told by two other USU applicants that advisors there indicated they don't even consider USU applicants. SFSU actually mentions online leveling/2nd bachelor's courses in its graduate admission information, so it seems pretty open to USU's program. I had a low cumulative GPA (still over 3.0) based on the fact that CSDCAS doesn't allow replacement grades for repeated courses, but I had significant volunteer experience with English language learners, refugees, and an education nonprofit. GRE scores were slightly above what was required for quant, well above the requirement for verbal, and at the requirement for analytical. I'm also completing a certified SLPA program through a community college right now. I'm very excited and happy to have been admitted and just wanted to put it out there that an online program isn't necessarily going to prevent you from getting into grad school--most schools seem to look at the "whole package," so just make sure that the big picture is a good one :).
