  1. @Juneoh you 're not alone! I too am an international student for English lit, going through the same feelings of excitement and nervousness! I found your post especilly comforting - it was good to know Im not the only one having mixed feelings! At first I thought that getting an offer is all that takes to make me completely happy for the rest of my life! wasnt prepared for these post-offer nerves!
  2. Hi Im womdering if anybody's interested in being a roommate? Im hoping to get a 2/2..Im a female grad student so Im very quiet, tidy and not really a party person...I'll be spending most of my time in my room reading and typing..I love animals so Im ok totally ok with pets (a moderate number and well-trained ones!) but I dont have any pets on my own...Im just starting out at UF..Im posting this request here because I prefer to room with a grad student who is quiet and clean.. I would like to keep the monthly rent below $ 600 all utilities included...If anybody's interested, plz reply! We can chat and see if we hit it off before making a decision..
  3. Congrats again! Good things happen to good people!
  4. Congrats @sarabethke! Very happy for you! Guess you can make proper plans now...
  5. You might want to check out University of Florida..Terry Harpold has sci fi interests..Guess there are few others as well; you can check out the faculty profiles...
  6. Its indeed getting tougher and tougher....I know that Purdue still couldnt send the Masters notifications because of funding issues...such a nice school! Too bad!
  7. I also finished other sections early so when I started speaking, noone else was speaking! My center gave us noise cancelling headphones, so when Others started speaking, I couldnt really hear what they were saying, just a slow hum... For anyone who is scared of having to speak to a mike: I was very apprehensive about how weird it would be, but it was totally ok...dont worry!
  8. Well, I emailed the school I was waiting to hear from and got a very warm reply..Their delay was only because of funding complications..If the wait is driving you nuts, its perfectly ok to email and ask..Schools should have notified their applicants by now..As an applicant you have the right to ask..I guess the worst they could do is not to reply..
  9. Congratulations! I too have followed your posts with interest and was really happy to hear you got in...Gives me hope that the waitlist could work out...
  10. Thanks guys! Appreciate your help!
  11. You're not alone Sarabethke! Goodluck with everything!
  12. Check the results board...I think Northwestern decisions went up weeks ago, sometime in Feb I think...
  13. PoliticalOrder, Neist and TakerUk, thank you soo much for your prompt replies! You guys are nice! I do like the look of Macbooks but its bit expensive...so I think I'll save my money since I already have a perfectly good, bought-only-last-year Windows laptop!
  14. Hi, I have been accepted to grad school in States...I'm wondering whether most American grad students use Mac laptops or windows laptops? I have a regular Windows laptop because that is what is generally used in my country..But when coming to States, I would like to have the type of computer generally used by most grad students in States so as to avoid compatibility issues...I know this is not a major question but I really would appreciate any help you guys could give me!
  15. Hey Cat,erburyTales, got some good news! Did you apply to Purdue for Masters or Phd? They have notified the Phd applicants but they havent sent out any English Masters offers yet..They are having funding complications and they expect to send out the Masters acceptances by the end of the month..Got all this from the DGS...If you're an English Masters applicant theres still hope!
  16. It means you are on the wait list - if an accepted student refuses the offer, you might get called in..However, your chances depend on the number of people the school has put on the wait list. Some schools rank the wait list so people in top positions gets called first..some schools dont rank the list and have their own mysterious ways of offering spots to students...But to answer your question, yes, you definitely do have a shot at this school! But nothing is guranteed...It's basically in the hands of your lucky stars! Whether you take this shot or not is entirely upto you..I guess it depends on how badly you want to go to this school...If you really want to take this chance, you might want to write to the DGS expressing your interest; you can also politely inquire about your rank in the waitlist, the cohort size...Then, pray that the right stars will align for you! Goodluck!
  17. Well, I wrote to the Purdue DGS and received no reply...This does not bode well coz during the application season they were very prompt with their replies..Guess the calamity that has befallen them is pretty serious...I dont know much about it though...however I dont think they should ignore their applicants like this - especially after getting us to pay a fee! People need some sort of closure...
  18. Hi everyone! Just wanted to start a forum to discuss UF, connect with other UF acceptances..This is specifically for English and MFA but other gators and prospective gators are also welcome! Are you guys considering attending UF? What are your impressions? Any body going to the visit weekend? For me, their admin side seems kinda chaotic but the courses seem interesting and the dept kinda seem nice enough..what I'm most interested in knowing is the "vibe" of the UF dept? Are they generally supportive? How is Gainesville? I guess it differs from person to person but would love to hear your thoughts and impressions...
  19. Most of the schools have given out their decisions...There are few thats still keeping us hanging though...e.g: I, along with few others, stll didnt hear from Purdue...The best way out of your misery is emailing the DGS asking when you can receive an admission decision...Since this is the end of March, I think it is a reasonable move...
  20. Ypink thank you for voicing this! The same thoughts have been on my mind regarding my waitlist but I wasnt brave enough to articulate them...I'm also glad to know that I'm not the only one who is haunted by the same thoughts...I simply thought I was exceptionally paranoid! Wyatt's Terps, thank you for the reassuring answer...just what I wanted to hear!
  21. Thank you very much for the news MedFemAglaeca! So good of you to share it..I know you declining the offer won't necessarily gurantee a spot for me, but after hearing your news my desperate hopes have brightened up a bit! During this anxious time, it means a lot! I hope your dream school will come knocking on your door with an offer of a very generous stipend!
  22. Hang in there Juneoh! You'll get your chance...hope you saw bhr's infomation about the Purdue situation...You still stand a chance! Keep your hopes up and try not to take rejections personally (although its easier said than done! I know!)..After a point, this whole process comes down to sheer dumb luck!
  23. Hi Anghellix, I took the horrid test last year...I only had the Norton anthologies to study from..I read them dilligently (if you're an compulsive reader, you'll actually enjoy studying for the test! Answering the paper is a nightmare! It's basically a race against time!)..I also used internet resources; read lots of summaries, so that I can get an idea about the characters and settings...The test passages give you certain clues so sometimes you can make an educated guess... During the test,I gave up most of the identification questions but answered the interpretation ones. Even if you cant identify the passage and its author, you can still answer many of the other questions on the passage just by reading the passage..The questions I hated were the Middle english ones ( time consuming to read), the anglo saxon ones ( cant read anglo saxon at all!) and the horrible grammar questions ( for some reason ETS is very fond of grammar/linguistics related questions!)... Just give up the questions you dont know and focus on the ones you do know...Most people cant answer every question in that paper; so it's not only you... Also most of the mid tier unis don't require the test...so before you waste your money on this, plz check if the schools you like require this test... The GRE general is basically a pressure test..You need to keep your cool at all times...keep calm and be focused or it'll be a train wreck! I used the free stuff available in the internet and scored in the 90s...(magoosh is pretty great! But I couldnt afford the paid help..However they have great free resources...Get your hands on the 5lb practice question book if you can..The best help come from the ETS free practice tests..You need some practice for this but always trust in your own abilities...you're an english major so your language skills are already quite good! Good luck!
  24. Congrats on your acceptances! I'm also on one waitlist, its my top choice! But no saying how it'll go..So I'm trying to moderate my wild, frantic, desperate hopes...Anyway, hope you'll get into the school you love best!
  25. Thanks sarabethke! I didn't ask any questions in my first mail..was just too happy to know there was still hope! Yeah, I think I will write to them in few days...I think someone here said it's too early to expect movement in waitlist... By the way, good luck to you with the Davis wait list!
