Took myself off the waitlist for UVA. I believe I was pretty high on it as well, so hopefully that helps someone!

Fabulous, thanks for sharing! Historically I've been interested in food ethics (mostly pet food tbh), epistemic injustice at the intersection of feminism/bioethics/Phil race, and philosophy of liberation (social movements, solidarity, respect for alterity).

Yup, I do mean Seattle.  My AOI's are Egalitarianism, Structural Oppression, and Philosophy of Language as it relates to politics, oppression, and power.  What are your's?

I just declined my acceptance to the University of Houston yesterday and I'm about to do the same with Virginia Tech. Hopefully, this will be helpful for someone.

In case anyone is interested: I have just accepted my offer from UW-Milwaukee and will be soon declining offers from NIU, VT, and WMU--hopefully this means that someone else will be able to take my place in any of these wonderful programs!! Good luck, everyone!!

I got into UW off the waitlist and accepted the offer.  This is such a relief.

I've accepted University of Washington Seattle. I've also removed myself from the waitlists for UC-Davis and UVA. Don't know if that will help folks, but at least if I would have gotten an offer they can go straight on to the next person without delay.

Congrats! Just so you know, a number of people who are initially waitlisted for funding end up receiving it. I think that for my year over half of the people originally had no funding and I know that a few of the first years were originally on the waitlist (we tend to shuffle through a few people on the waitlist every year).
If you're really interested in VT (or anyone else who was waitlisted for funding) I can send along other funding options that I know about. The DGS also sometimes tries to help people find things.

Current VT student here-- a couple grad students talked about this yesterday. Our DGS is currently away at a conference so we think that may be part of the delay. This was also a hiring year for us and last time that happened nothing went out until after the 20th (of March...so we're still later than even that) so that's also part of the delay possibly.

That is a super cool subfield of ethics (one that I think is becoming more and more important), and I respect you for conducting research in it.

Hi, MtnDuck. Thank you for offering your advice. VT is the one school I'm largely in the dark with. How do you feel about VT's department when it comes to political/social/moral philosophy? I noticed you had an assistant professor working there who specializes in virtue ethics, which is a major focus of mine right now. Do you think the department is generally strong in these areas? Also, I have to admit that Blacksburg, at least initially, strikes me as the least appealing location among the others. I do like Appalachia though. How do you feel about Blacksburg?

@MtnDuck Hey! Yeah, please! It's pretty unlikely that I will be able to visit VT if I'm admitted since I live about 700 miles away, so please do message me and tell me all about it. Departmental climate is pretty important to me, and, of course, it's tough to gather much about that without chatting with, like, an actual person lol.

Very interesting. Have you checked out the UC Press food studies journal Gastronomica? I had a short-lived subscription to it which ended only because I didn’t have the money to continue. It had really fascinating papers and discussed issues about food that intersected with politics, ethics, international relations, and everything else under the sun that I never would have thought about before I read it.

I'm currently at VT so if you have any questions feel free to let me know! We just hired someone who is phil sci but I don't think we've made an official announcement yet (but I can PM you more about that if you want).

Usually, there is a UNC grad student who roams the boards during this time, but I noticed there wasn't any. Sorry to everyone waiting on UNC! I am not sure what's taking so long other than us having lots of faculty on leave at various points this year. That plus having some new faculty that may not be put on committees yet would be my guess for the holdup. Based on my best available evidence, decisions had not been made as of Tuesday. Since the prospective weekend will be taking place in a little over a month, I'm guessing that decisions will be made soon and emails will be sent quickly after.

I'd apologize for the delay, but this is not my responsibility at all.

OMG I was staring at the wrong place:
I was hoping to talk to you on the phone, but since you might not be in the US, I wasn’t sure when would be the best time to call.
So let me start by attaching the following letter, which I hope you find to be of interest.
Once you’ve read the letter, let me say: CONGRATULATIONS!
If you’d like to to talk about our offer — terms can be confusing, but this is our typical package — I’d be happy to do so. Just let me know when would be good and what number I should try to reach you at.   I look forward to talking to you soon.   Best, Eric Watkins
