Thanks so much for the feedback, everyone! I think I'm feeling confident enough to just apply everywhere I was intending to apply and see how things shake out.

Hi All, I am MA student finishing up my degree at a top 3 Canadian university. Currently, I am preparing my applications to PhD programs with a focus in political theory. I just wrote the GRE and, unfortunately, I choked. 154Q and 167V. Don't have my writing scores back yet. In hindsight, I've realized that, owing to a number of factors, I did not spend nearly enough time preparing. To make matters worse, I have terrible anxiety and just froze up for significant portions of the exam. My plan is (or was) to apply to the following schools: Harvard, Michigan, Minnesota, U of Toronto, Johns Hopkins, NYU, Northwestern and Chicago. Now that I have written the GRE, though, I am not so sure if I should even bother applying to those schools in the top 10. Some additional information: my UGPA is a 4.0 and my MGPA is a 4.0. I have three very enthusiastic LORs from three very well-known and well-respected tenured professors. Two of these referees have informed me that they will be describing me as one of the best students they have ever had. As an undergrad I wrote an honours thesis that ended up being the top thesis for my year. I have four years of research experience under a famous professor and have been a TA for four courses. My writing sample is strong, I suppose. It was the top research paper in the seminar for which I wrote it and I am currently working with another professor in the department to get it submitted to a high impact journal. Still working on my SOP. Any advice is much appreciated!

Hi all, lurker here. Accepted by Queen's (back in Feb) and Toronto (on March 3) for MA. Queen's is offering full funding; no funding at Toronto as far as I can tell (wasn't shortlisted for the SSHRC CGS-M). Still waiting on McGill and UBC. Good luck to everyone! P.S. Has anyone applying to UBC heard from Dr. Quirk a second time concerning the status of their CGS-M? I heard from him back in Feb, but nothing since.

Hi everyone, I'm a domestic student aiming to apply for Political Science MA programs in Canada this cycle. I was initially planning to apply directly into PhD programs, but circumstances have dictated that I take the MA route first (this is probably for the best). For what it's worth, I am currently finishing my application for the CGS-M. Any and all feedback/advice is very much appreciated! PROFILE: Type of Undergrad Institution: Top 3 Canadian University Major(s)/Minor(s): Political Science (Major)/English (Major) Undergrad GPA: CGPA: 3.95/ final two years: 4.0 GRE: N/A. Will be taking shortly. Any Special Courses: Several graduate-level seminars (democratic theory, IR, critical theory), two Honours theses Letters of Recommendation: All extremely enthusiastic about writing for me and all advocates of my pursuing a PhD. 1) Well known and well-respected senior professor with whom I am currently RAing. Co-supervised my Honours thesis. 2) Established IR scholar and full professor. I have taken two courses with them, including one graduate seminar. 3) AP who taught another graduate seminar I took. Currently Graduate Chair at one of the schools I am applying to. Research Experience: ~1 year of RAing, two Honours theses (I was the top student in my Political Science Honours thesis seminar) Teaching Experience: None Subfield/Research Interests: Political behaviour/psychology (comparative focus), political communication, democratic theory, experimental political science Other stuff: Was the Editor-in-Chief of the IR undergraduate student journal, received a major department scholarship, Dean's List for three years, miscellaneous student/community leadership work that probably doesn't factor in.
