  1. Hi everyone! Wow, I was so happy to find some people with the same problem and questions here! I will be starting a PhD in the fall and my school doesn't cover health insurance for my partner (on a J-2 visa).. My school also referred to this "marketplace" plan. When you were considering this, did you find out whether this type of plan would be approved/enough for J-2 insurance (since the requirements for that are a bit stricter)? Thank you so much for sharing your experiences (in this post and in general)

Thanks for your reply! I hope I can make it work Have you already been looking at neighbourhoods and nearby towns? You are also starting this Fall, right?

Hi! I'm also planning to start a PhD in Boulder next semester. However, I'm still a little bit worried about finances.. My funding consists of (smaller or bigger) TA-ships (and possibly RA-ships and fellowships in the future) and would - in case of a small TA-ship - be around 13k. I was wondering if any current Boulderites on here can say something about whether it would be possible to live on that? Thank you
  4. Hi! Does anyone know anything about rejections from University of Washington Seattle? I have seen two acceptances on the results page in the beginning of February and I know I (and some others) have been waitlisted. But I'm wondering whether maybe they haven't rejected anyone yet, which would make the (sort of) waitlist very long (and my chances very low!)...
  5. Hi! I see you're also waiting for Boulder.. From the results-page it seems that in previous years they did an Open House/interviews in the beginning of March. In that case I would really think that they start inviting people soon; they can't really expect people to travel with only one week notice? I hope we'll hear something soon!
  6. Hi everyone! I have also applied for the DAAD master program funding and really hope to hear something soon (although their email said the answer could come - at the latest - in August..). I have no idea of my chances for the DAAD scholarship, but fortunately I have already been accepted to the master program last year (I deferred). Good luck everyone !
  7. Hi Puffer Fish, I'm definitely not an expert, but reading your post only one big question comes to my mind: why computational linguistics? Did you take a course, do you have programming experience? From what I know the UW's program is not easy to get into and they expect you to have taken (at least) some courses in programming, statistics, etc. Maybe you could look at some MOOC's and see if you can find a computational linguistics course (for example, this general introduction to NLP: https://www.coursera.org/learn/natural-language-processing)? That way you cant test whether you like it *and* whether you think you'll be able to do it. Also - if you decide to apply next year - it might help to show that you are motivated Good luck!
