  1. Thanks, I hope so too! Some places can really suck if you're fat--so its nice to know which spots are you can easily get around and to be yourself.
  2. First of all, this is truly an exercise in semantics. Is someone an 'athlete' if she is in high school sports? What about a rec soccer team? What about pick up soccer? I haven't played competitively in years, does that mean I am not one? Or take business, for example. Which persons are "businesspersons"? The CEO? What if the only thing she does is wine and dine clients? What about the President who relies on the CFO for actual understanding of financial performance and the COO to execute her business 'ideas'? In the same way that all of these people are in some way 'businesspersons', I think that in the realm of science--especially given the sophistication and diversity of the field today--it can only be for the sake of vanity to decide who is "not" a scientist.
  3. I gained a lot of weight in school, but I didn't let it get me down!!! Good luck you guys, and stay true to yourselves!!!
  4. I agree with other posters that it might not be good to jump into your academic career with a particular political label self-assigned. Letting your understanding of 'the Classics' be clouded by a particular political identity may be unnecessary and perhaps an unhelpful practice in many regards. Be honest and truthful and rational, and most of all don't mix politics into work that doesn't require it. On a further note, academe is more diverse than you seem to be willing to admit. Careful not to go down the 'victim' road to early.
  5. Wow, that's awesome! Congrats! Any advice for future applicants??
  6. This is just my two cents, but I think you need to love your body as you are, even if you do gain a few sizes in school. You are beautiful!!
  7. Texas Women's University is really good for us bigger girls I would say. It's coed even though it has 'Womens' in the name. Most of the staff and professors are bigger, so they get it. The campus is pretty tight layout so you don't have to walk TOO much, and there are plenty of good spots to nom within driving distance. Not sure if you're big enough to need a scooter, but its pretty accommodating if you need it. Hope that helps!!!
