Social Psychology Fall 2017 Applicants
Blackwater replied to MyDogHasAPhD's topic in Psychology Forum
From what I've seen on the results page penn state has done phone screening and it looks like UMich has selected their applicants. -
I am wondering if an outfit like the one in the link below would be appropriate for a social with the grad students? Is it too casual? https://goo.gl/images/RF9os5
-
I think a short cardigan and a scarf could look nice but still dress it down.

I could definitely see why you are concerned. However, a lot of these profs are married and may not hold that bias. As well, many people get married in graduate school or before they attend, so it's really not that uncommon. I don't think any program/prof expects you to put your entire life on hold for the next 5-6 years. if they have an issue with it now, even if you are admitted it may be more frustrating to work with someone who holds that bias and underestimates you.
-
I could see why you might be concerned about profs having certain assumptions since you're married. I think the questions is really do you want to work with someone who would factor your marital status into their admissions decisions? Is their a specific negative way you think it will influence their decisions?

Just to jump in here, I am also going to an interview on the east coast and purchased similar boots to wear since it will most likely be raining/snowing/very cold. I think flats just have too much exposure, and you could end up being uncomfortable/cold.
-
I would recommend not missing it. I imagine the event will not go too late, and you could leave when you feel is appropriate, since they know you have an interview the next day. You have the possibility to get some great insight at the social in a more casual environment.

I emailed my POI from UChicago, and they let me know that they have reviewed applications already. I am not sure if they contacted these applicants or not, but I felt that was the implication. -

I have had a few phone interviews and most of the questions have been pretty similar. Examples below: Why do you specifically want to work with the POI Why do you want to attend that specific program Describe your most important research experience and the main things you learned from it Why do you want to pursue a PhD in social psych Is there a specific line of research you want to pursue Typical strengths and weakness questions Also, be sure you have a few questions to ask them concerning the program and/or their research. -

Does anyone have good resources they're using to prepare for interviews in social psych? -
I would say it is more formal than what most men wear, but not so formal that is socially awkward. Since you feel really comfortable wearing it I say that is the best option!

I have seen some fairly petite suits in the junior's (not women's) section at Macy's, they were also reasonably priced! If you are in a bind you can consider buying the closest fit and then having it tailored.

I actually have a question about interview attire myself now. I am a California native currently living there and have just been invited to an interview weekend in January in New York. I have a nice thick coat, hat, and gloves to wear. The only think I am concerned about is shoes. If it is going to be cold and snowing and I will be taking a campus tour and traveling from event to event outside I have no idea what to wear on my feet; normally in this type of weather I would wear boots. I of course planned on wearing nice flats with a suit, but now I am concerned that my feet will not be warm enough. Does anyone have any suggestions?
-
I would second everyone's statement about wearing flats. Purchasing a full suit can be very expensive ($100+), but you can purchase a nice business dress and tights for significantly less (JCPenny, TJMaxx). Just thought I would mention it in case you needed to take finances into consideration.

If you have time I would recommend retaking the GRE, especially if you are applying to PhD programs and also because the schools you listed are highly competitive. You probably should aim to score north of the 70th percentile at a minimum.
-
I would like to second this statement. Although everyone may have a different opinion I do not think it is wise to take out money for a Master's program that would not increase your employability or annual average salary. A Master's program can serve as a good transition, especially if you are unsure of your research interests or have a poor undergraduate GPA. However, unless you already have the ability to pay for one out of pocket I would not recommend paying for a degree which will not earn you more money. There are many paths to a PhD, and I would avoid the more costly route if at all possible. As state before, getting a lab manager or RA position has the potential to be just as beneficial.

This is a tough question. I think the answer may be that it depends on how you communicate the information. I do agree that you have to be tactful when discussing your own mental health issues in a statement. That being said, a lot of diversity prompts specifically ask what barriers you have overcome in the pursuit of your education. I think that this could be something you discuss in your statement if it was done in a way that focuses more on your resilience, drive, and commitment to your education. So I would focus less on the situation itself and focus more on your ability to overcome obstacles. As always, I would recommend having a prof/mentor review the statement so they can give you feedback on how it might be received.

Not Happy With Graduate School Program
Blackwater replied to firehawkocean's topic in Psychology Forum
APU does have a very good MFT program with smaller cohorts and small student to prof ratio. There is a significant amount of faith integration, as it is a Christian based school. If you can afford the cost and would prefer going to a Christian school this would be an excellent choice. -
I would not worry too much about it. Given that it is the beginning of the semester a lot of profs are at their busiest. If there are any questions you still have I think it would be fine a few weeks (4ish) after you sent the last email to follow up with them. That being said, I would only contact them if there was important information you need to know before deciding whether or not to apply to that school.

Hi everyone, I will be applying to PhD programs for social psychology this season. I am primarily interested in working with PIs who study gender discrimination in the workplace, but am pretty open to working with anyone who is interested in gender discrimination. I am hopping that some of you may be able to recommend schools/POIs that, based on my qualifications, you think I have a shot of getting into. I have a BA in Psychology from a small liberal arts school (GPA 3.9) About 5 full years of research experience, in about four different labs. I worked in each lab for about two years (at least). Three of the PIs will be writing me a letter of recommendation. Only one of these labs was a social psychology lab. I have two published papers (second and third author). When I apply it is very likely that I will have a third paper published as first author (currently in peer review). I also will have three other papers (two as first author) in review when I apply. One of which was from an experiment I developed and wrote up from undergrad that concerned gender discrimination in the workplace. I have 7 poster presentations, and was first author on three- all at major conferences (SPSP, SFN,APS) I was a paid teaching assistant for two years GRE: V-160, Q-156, AW-4.5 I will be taking the GRE again at the end of September. This is my third time taking it this year, and am not confident my score will go up much. If anyone could recommend programs that I might have a realistic shot of getting into that would be much appreciated!
