My intro probability course used "A First Course in Probability" by Sheldon Ross. Has solutions in the back, and you can find pdfs of it online. Maybe also khan academy.

If you are even thinking of pursuing a research job I think it would be a mistake to pass up the opportunity to go to a place like NCSU where their students not only consistently end up at top companies in industry but also find great positions in academia. At worst you decide a research job isn't for you and either finish your PhD at a great program or you drop with a masters depending on how far along you are.
Check out the placement of NCSU and Minnesota PhDs, it's impressive.
    Just my two cents.

I'm intrigued, what field is this in? Everything I ever read/heard (particularly thinking of Berkeley planning and Harvard economics, which are two fields I can think of where both verbal and quant are probably meaningful, and, (sadly, for what it says about my capacity for procrastination) a couple of peer-reviewed papers on the role of the GRE in PhD admissions) has described GRE scores as an initial straining mechanism, if that, or just maybe as a final tie-breaker. What program has either a 169 internal cutoff, or hordes of precisely similarly highly attractive candidates seperable only by 1 point on the GRE?

I approve of the nerdery, don't get me wrong (and I think you're spot-on in terms of analysis of the test, particularly that the various paid services are overrated. ETS has most of everything you really need out there for free) but you're seriously going to retake it? Forget the money,* I'd resent the further hours of my life gone, that could be spent reading good books or fighting with my mother or having crushing attacks of self loathing. You know, nice things. The marginal value of these two points as an actual admissions criteria - remember, the reason for the thing? - is negligible to zero, surely. I mean, I (sort of) get it - I was in a slightly similar boat with the TOEFL and, yes, there was a brief moment of irritation at missing that perfect score by 2 points, but, goodness, not nearly enough to actually want to retake it.
    *Don't forget the money

This doesn't sound like a red flag to me. Real Analysis is usually a much harder course than discrete math. Is this stated on your transcript? If it isn't I don't think you have anything to worry about. I think for many schools academic probation is an internal matter and not an external one.
For a CS masters at non-top 10 schools (possibly non top 20 schools, or just non funded masters) they really just want to make sure that you aren't going to fail. The math minor gives you points there. If you can also demonstrate that you can write working code (github account, some experience, courses) then you would be very low risk.

Backpack or messenger bag? For pete's sake, this is grad school, not high school! Who cares what I bring my stuff to school in, as long as it gets there? If all I have on hand is a paper bag, then that's what it'll be. No one will notice or care, and if they do that's they're problem, not mine.

Robbentheking reacted to eyeshadow in Late LOR
My impression is that he hasn't forgotten, he will hopefully submit it on time for you--it just seems like one of the inertias that professors have, doing whatever that is not on the top of their list in the last minute. This is obviously a very annoying situation for all of us grad students. I also reminded one of my professors today the deadline for LOR (one of the deadlines is day after tomorrow for me as well and he had not submitted yet) and he was really pissed off about it, rolling his eyes and going "I know. It's not like I forgot."  I was kind of taken aback by this since I did talk to him in a friendly tone, and regretted mentioning it for a while, but now I'm thinking whatever. I mean, he isn't going to be responsible for all the time + money I spent and most importantly, my future. Although possibility exists that some schools may wait for late LORs, it is indeed case-by-case, as some others may shut down everything after the deadline. So my advice for you is just go for it, call him and do everything to make sure he doesn't miss it. I'd rather just have an uncomfortable moment of confrontation than spend few days waiting in anxiety + have my future plans possibly torn apart.

Robbentheking reacted to zxmkn in In Germany, which math/stats departments are strongest in probability/mathematical stats?
    Hi all,
I'd like to know which German universities' mathematics or statistics departments have the strongest reputation in the area of probability theory and mathematical statistics.
I'm currently applying to a variety of German master's programs in mathematics, applied mathematics, and statistics, but -- not having been immersed in research myself -- I don't know which of these has the best reputation (particularly internationally) for research in the areas that I'd like to pursue.
If anyone out there has a bit of insight, I'd really appreciate your feedback.

does anyone in stats really care at all about complex analysis? I could imagine some of the techniques for integration might pop up in some proof somewhere, but otherwise it doesn't seem too applicable.

The passages are as much about what the text doesn't say as what it does. They want you to confuse an intimation for an implication. Think of it this way: if you developed amnesia before the test, and knew literally nothing besides how to read & reason, would you be able to surmise that inference? The test loves for you to make leaps towards commonly held beliefs based on the tone of the passage and something it hints at.
Another way of looking at it is thinking of yourself as a prosecutor, every passage as a confession, and every question as asked by a judge in the trial...you can make inferences only what is stated explicitly or implied in the passage, not on anything else, even if it is tempting to generalize. You must be able to infer, based on the text, beyond a reasonable it. The defense would love for you to read too far into it and make unsubstantiated claims based on preexisting beliefs that you hold, but that are not necessarily supported by the limited evidence admitted to the court.
Also, if two choices each share a logical implication, but one requires the shared logical implication plus something else to be true, it will always be the simpler of the two choices. That's the only way ETS could have only one right answer: if a choice that imply "x and y" and a choice that implies "x" are both options, and it is a multiple choice question requiring you to choose one answer, the only way to have only one true statement would be for "x" alone to be the answer.

I'm a US international, went to school in the US and will be applying to US schools; I'm just working in Germany currently. I actually intend to ask the head of the German department back home to write a rec for me, but I was thinking of making this a fourth rec. It should actually be a very good rec because she really likes me and has openly pushed for me to get somewhat undeserved department awards in the past, but because I'm applying to a quanitative field, I want to make sure I fill my required recs with people that actually have an understanding of what it takes to do grad level work in a quanitative field.
I'm in Berlin. I would consider staying here, but to be honest I sort of miss the US and speaking English all the time. It's just a bit easier haha

Robbentheking reacted to MathCat in How bad is a C during senior year going to look on my transcript?
I'll preface this by saying I'm not in statistics. Getting a C in an upper division math course could definitely hurt you. Given that it's linear algebra, it's an even bigger deal: I know linear algebra is very important for (most, anyway) statistics programs. If you got a C in abstract algebra, it would probably not hurt you anywhere near as much as a C in linear algebra. I know you say it's because of proofs and you won't be doing proofs in the masters program, but I'm not sure how much that would matter to an adcomm. You would somehow have to explain that it's just the proofs part giving you difficulty, and I think this would just come off as a weak excuse at best. So I would recommend taking it in the spring if you are certain you will not do very well.
