  1. That's exactly what my master supervisor told me. So I didn't bother sending emails to any professors. Even for a few schools that you indeed work for an individual faculty, it is still unnecessary to contact the professor. They will contact you if they are interested in you.
  2. There have already been a couple of people reporting their acceptances, which makes me really nervous now....
  3. Congratulations to your FSU offer! May I ask when did you hear back from Iowa? I submitted my application before the Christmas but still no word from them yet....
  4. Hi, I was accepted by a Canadian university and just received my official offer letter. They ask me to accept / decline the offer within 3 weeks. I really like this program, but I am still waiting for the results from a couple of schools in the US. Would it be better to write an email to programs that I haven't heard back from and ask them about my status, or ask the Canadian program to extend my deadline for accepting the offer? Thanks!
  5. If I were you, I would go with the measure theory. I didn't take it when I was an undergrad, and now I am a master student and had a really bad time with measure theory. I am planning to take it in the first semester of my PhD program. As both my master supervisor and undergrad supervisor told me, 99% of the time you probably won't need the knowledge. However, as my current supervisor added, once or twice in your life, you might need to proof something with measure theory.
  6. Based on what I know, probably Computer Science is more suitable for both "research in machine learning ... developing strategies for automated stock trading" and "engineering with some pure mathematics (background)" than statistics. If you are aiming for a job in private sectors, they would evaluate you more on "what you can do" rather than "what is your major". And if you search positions posted on glassdoor or linkedin, actually employers don't care whether you are stat PhD or cs PhD or ECE PhD (and I know a couple of ECE and physics PhDs working in Wall Street or HF in Boston now). Another practical issue is that most professors in statistics departments are not focusing on financial statistics (which is why I had a hard time searching for potential supervisors). And as far as I know, among these professors, not many of them are implementing machine learning techniques, and vice versa.
  7. Sure they are one of the top programs. By "poor" I mean financially they are not as generous as other programs. As a graduate student, I believe having sufficient funding for myself is more important than how many big names in the department.
  8. I heard a lot of rumors about how poor the Wisconsin's stat department is especially after the financial crisis. I guess that's why every year they will send out so many offers (about 1/4 to 1/3 of all applicants, which is abnormally high) while only a few of people will accept the offer.
  9. If you check the admission profile for UW-Madison's stat department, you will find that for the past few years there were around 250 applicants. They admitted about 80 each year, while only less than a quarter of them will enroll. https://www.gradsch.wisc.edu/webextras/education/academicprograms/profiles/949PHD.pdf So I guess it is quite common for them to send offers without funding?
  10. Michigan is a reach program for me too, and I haven't received any acceptance yet, which makes me really anxious right now. Anyway, good luck to you as well!
  11. And it seems like they send the result for domestic students and international students separately. Although I still haven't heard back from them too....
  12. Well, I won't be surprised since procrastination is a noble tradition in academia.
  13. So we will hear back from the departments probably this week and next week... Now I am even more nervous LOL
  14. Am I too anxious or it's still too early for most schools to return the results? A little bit quiet for me....
