  1. That's exactly what my master supervisor told me. So I didn't bother sending emails to any professors. Even for a few schools that you indeed work for an individual faculty, it is still unnecessary to contact the professor. They will contact you if they are interested in you.
  2. There have already been a couple of people reporting their acceptances, which makes me really nervous now....
  3. Congratulations to your FSU offer! May I ask when did you hear back from Iowa? I submitted my application before the Christmas but still no word from them yet....
  4. Hi, I was accepted by a Canadian university and just received my official offer letter. They ask me to accept / decline the offer within 3 weeks. I really like this program, but I am still waiting for the results from a couple of schools in the US. Would it be better to write an email to programs that I haven't heard back from and ask them about my status, or ask the Canadian program to extend my deadline for accepting the offer? Thanks!
  5. If I were you, I would go with the measure theory. I didn't take it when I was an undergrad, and now I am a master student and had a really bad time with measure theory. I am planning to take it in the first semester of my PhD program. As both my master supervisor and undergrad supervisor told me, 99% of the time you probably won't need the knowledge. However, as my current supervisor added, once or twice in your life, you might need to proof something with measure theory.
  6. Based on what I know, probably Computer Science is more suitable for both "research in machine learning ... developing strategies for automated stock trading" and "engineering with some pure mathematics (background)" than statistics. If you are aiming for a job in private sectors, they would evaluate you more on "what you can do" rather than "what is your major". And if you search positions posted on glassdoor or linkedin, actually employers don't care whether you are stat PhD or cs PhD or ECE PhD (and I know a couple of ECE and physics PhDs working in Wall Street or HF in Boston now). Another practical issue is that most professors in statistics departments are not focusing on financial statistics (which is why I had a hard time searching for potential supervisors). And as far as I know, among these professors, not many of them are implementing machine learning techniques, and vice versa.
  7. Sure they are one of the top programs. By "poor" I mean financially they are not as generous as other programs. As a graduate student, I believe having sufficient funding for myself is more important than how many big names in the department.
  8. I heard a lot of rumors about how poor the Wisconsin's stat department is especially after the financial crisis. I guess that's why every year they will send out so many offers (about 1/4 to 1/3 of all applicants, which is abnormally high) while only a few of people will accept the offer.
  9. If you check the admission profile for UW-Madison's stat department, you will find that for the past few years there were around 250 applicants. They admitted about 80 each year, while only less than a quarter of them will enroll. https://www.gradsch.wisc.edu/webextras/education/academicprograms/profiles/949PHD.pdf So I guess it is quite common for them to send offers without funding?
  10. Michigan is a reach program for me too, and I haven't received any acceptance yet, which makes me really anxious right now. Anyway, good luck to you as well!
  11. And it seems like they send the result for domestic students and international students separately. Although I still haven't heard back from them too....
  12. Well, I won't be surprised since procrastination is a noble tradition in academia.
  13. So we will hear back from the departments probably this week and next week... Now I am even more nervous LOL
  14. Am I too anxious or it's still too early for most schools to return the results? A little bit quiet for me....
  15. I saw an NCSU acceptance in the results search. That makes me more nervous now.
  16. Hi deus-ex, I am in a similar situation. I have a B.S. in applied math and currently working on my master's degree in statistics, and my thesis is somehow related to computational finance. I applied to only one school for CS program, although I know a lot of my colleagues, especially those interested in machine learning, apply to CS PhD programs. I am also curious how the life of CS PhD would be like.
  17. I failed to find the edit button so I will post the update here. This morning a staff at Duke's admission office replied my email (I really appreciate their efficiency), and told me that my application is still there. I guess maybe the blank page means nothing. Thanks again for all your suggestions!
  18. I do not think it will take five business days for ETS to send the score. I request the score report on Dec 23rd, and by Dec 28th almost all the schools showed that they received my official score report. And you need to minus the holiday. However, it may take the school several days to process the score reports, especially for those who manually update your material status. Sometimes it may take them another 5 to 7 business days or less to update your status. I guess you can always write an email to ask the secretaries if they have seen your score report, though I doubt if it would be necessary. Most of the time they will just ask you to wait for another week. And I believe most schools will let you know that your score report is still missing, and will ask you to send them a screenshot first, and then grant you one or two weeks to send an official one. (Yes, Purdue, I mean most schools, not you!)
  19. Have you considered stat master in biostat track at UBC? One of the new students enrolled in our department last year came from MHC as well, although I cannot recall if she is doing biostat or not. UBC provides fundings to master students.
  20. Maybe you want to try Canadian schools? A lot of programs offer fundings to master students. Not a lot though, barely cover your rent and food.
  21. Sorry :-P I am just too frustrated..... Hopefully they can restore the application material, though Duke is still a long shot for me. I thought there might at least be a box for you to check and say "Yes I confirm." or something like that
  22. I applied to NCSU, it's definitely my top choices! Unfortunately I didn't make the priority deadline. My supervisor didn't submit her LOR until Dec 28. Wish I can hear from them soon. I think they have their own system to check the status, and I logged in several times and everything seems the same... Not sure if anything will change later... fingers crossed.
  23. Hi guys, this is a stupid but kinda frustrating question..... I am applying for Duke's statistics PhD for 2017 fall. I accidentally clicked the "withdraw application" tab button when checking my application material status, and nothing appears on the web page except a blank page. I was wondering if my application is still there if I did not click anything else or it's already removed just by one-click? I already sent them an email, but would not expect them to reply in a few days. Totally freaking out now.... Is there any way I can tell my application is still there or not? Thanks in advance!
