  1. Hello all. I've been admitted to the PhD program at Texas A&M. Does anyone have information regarding placement?
  2. Hi @BrittanyA1701. I wouldn't worry too much about probabilities or building a model. The problem is the acceptance rates schools report aren't always what they seem. For example, I got an email from a school today that said (paraphrasing), you are on our shortlist for admission, please reply back if you're still interested. Said school now doesn't have to report offering me admission (and risking being turned down) unless they're fairly certain I'll join their program. Do you see what I'm saying? The numbers can be fudged a bit. Not that I'm saying schools are dishonest. They're just trying to play the game to the best of the department's interest. I echo @Innominate. Post a few more details (ranking range of said state school, math courses and corresponding grades, etc.), and I'm sure at least a couple of people on this forum would be happy to help guide you in the right direction. Also, I would suggest looking at past "admissions results" threads and weighing your profile against others/comparing schools they were admitted to/rejected from.
  3. It's shameful and reflects poorly on Wisconsin's stats department.
  4. Hi @garethalex. The good news is you still have plenty of time to decide. My only advice at this early stage would be to keep in mind that you can apply to a combination of both. Research departments and see if they have students who have been placed in the sector(s) in which you wish to work. Seems like Harvard stats has good placement in the financial sector, but I would check that.
  5. Unfortunately, it is possible. If you look at the results search the past couple of years, a few people posted that their admission to UW Madison was without funding. In my opinion, this seems to be a recurring theme. Did the email state outright that you will not be funded? Or was funding simply not mentioned?
  6. Looks like about 12 rejections and 4-5 acceptances have been posted for Michigan (PhD) the past two years. We're up to 8 and 3 so far this year. So, it seems like there will be a little bit more of both (hopefully more acceptances than rejections!). Last year there were a couple of waitlist postings as well. I have to say, I am more anxious about this result than any of the others thus far. There were so many results posted last week. I thought surely we'd hear something this week.
  7. @marmle Not all stats schools, but Michigan does and yes, I think there was a box to check. However, people in the past have posted that they were asked upon PhD rejection if they want their application transferred to the masters committee (whether said box was checked or not).
  8. This thread got quiet in a hurry. @marmle did you ever hear from Michigan? I haven't still. I'm thinking they are narrowing down the waitlist or maybe we're being considered for the masters program.
  9. Notice also that the email was received on the 9th (when the bulk of the others were).
  10. Good points all @marmle. Seconded on the no safety schools and the advice on biostatistics. I've had a lot of experience with code and had an internship using R (ggplot) to generate plots from SWPC data. My first research project was in high energy physics using the ROOT data analysis framework (C++) to analyze charge flip rates in Z boson decay. I've created an R package, etc. etc. No CS classes however. So, maybe that's a factor. I don't think I would say undergraduate institution isn't a factor, but it depends, right? My institution doesn't have a statistics department and is ranked low in math. That probably didn't do me any favors. However, coming from a department like that, if I had been admitted to a "top ten" I may have been over my head. So, I'm really happy with the schools I've gottten into thus far, and I think it all worked out for the best.
  11. @statbiostat2017 I have my calculus sequence (of course), discrete, ODEs, proof-based linear, Bayesian statistics, 2 semesters intro upper division statistics, mathematical statistics (1 sem), graph theory, Analysis (1 sem).
  12. The following is given under the assumption that you are applying to PhD programs: These aren't necessarily safety schools, but here are some schools you might consider. Some might be considered safety, some not so much (but still worth considering given your interests, size of departments, your profile, etc): Texas A&M, Colorado State, Iowa State, Michigan, Purdue, Michigan State Some general advice that I wish others had given to me: Apply to as many programs as you can afford. Also, I come from a similar undergraduate institution, and so I'll relate what I've experienced on that front. I am a female domestic McNair Scholar, had 2 years of research experience, a stellar GPA, great GRE scores (even in verbal and writing), fantastic letters of recommendation, and so far, have been rejected by all of the top ten schools I applied to, including Duke. I have however cracked the top 15. If I could go back and do it all again, I would have applied to more schools in the 10-25 range and fewer (or none) in the top ten (according to usnews or other ranking sources). Also, study hard for that GRE. I liked magoosh. It served me well. Some people may tell you great (perfect or nearly so on quant) GRE scores aren't that important, but go look at the results search on this site. A near perfect quant may not get you into a top tier school, but chances are you aren't getting in one without it. Do well (As) in your courses this semester, apply broadly, do your research on the programs you're applying to, and good luck!
  13. It doesn't look like @marmle (with a really good profile it seems!) has heard back yet either. So, maybe this is a good thing? Michigan is a little bit of a reach for me. I have been admitted to a school that is ranked a little lower but have not been admitted to any schools ranked higher (source: us news and others). We'll see what happens. Good luck to you!
  14. Michigan acceptances and rejections posted. Haven't heard anything yet. We kind of already knew this, but for future viewers of this thread, they definitely don't send out all decisions in one batch.
