  1. Especially for those who had been there in prior years: do most waitlist candidates get notified after April 15th? And how does it work if one is on two waitlists and they have different timelines? Are there chances to get off the waitlist <nervous>? Would be grateful for any experience! And for those currently on waitlists: fingers crossed !
  2. I was wondering how the committees/professors look at people applying WHILE in the second year of MA (if the writing sample and references were already strong, as you've done the first-year coursework/papers/etc) ? Is a MA student viewed as "someone with a BA", "someone going to get a MA", or "someone with an MA"? Is it more preferable to take a year off after MA and apply then (to prove you've done "the whole degree")?
  3. Congrats to Columbia acceptances! Did you get e-mails from POIs or did your status change in the online application already?
  4. Not everyone gets automatically deferred to MAPH, and not everyone deferred gets in. They have a separate review process and it's still a success and something to be proud of to get through that. Maybe the program had a different reputation on gradcafe ten years ago, but I heard that current MAPH class is largest to date, so they don't "need" to accept everyone and there is no need to doubt their selection process
  5. Congrats to Yale admits!!! ❤️ Would you share your field of study (here or PM)?
  6. Congrats to UChicago admits! ❤️ Would you mind sharing your field?
  7. @DigitalHubris, I descended into the various regions of youtube, and the weirdness of the music depended on my mood (anything from Sound of Silence to Britney Spears - I did not neccessarily listen while writing applications because I prefer to do it in quiet, but afterwards)
  8. Hey! I minored in art history so I had more than 5 courses, but we had people entering from STEM backgrounds into our MA in Humanities program, so it's definitely open to students switching to/trying out different disciplines than the ones they had undergrad background in. I would also thread with caution about what peers online say and go directly into the websites of MA Art History programs you are interested in. Sometimes they say you should have at least 4 courses in Art History or so, but sometimes they don't require that - and you could always e-mail the program administrator to double-check!
  9. Hi! I am in the MAPH program at the University of Chicago and there are no pre-reqs about art history courses here, and you can get an equivalent of a MA in Art History through the program. So if you'd rather get into a degree program rather than take courses independently, you can consider it! I am from studio art background too, and it could even work to your advantage in the admissions process if you frame it well.n
  10. Did everyone hear from Williams??? I did not hear anything yet...
  11. I don't think it should be an issue :)...Call the ETS to double-check, but don't worry!
  12. Hello Rich! Thank you so much for helpful advice! I followed it and got 4 more points during my second practice test, with realistic test experience (same hour as my test). I am planning to do one more realistic-experience practice test before my GRE to see if I've improved!
  13. Hello! I'm taking my GRE in two days, on Saturday... and I start to worry about small stuff, like school selection for sending scores! I would be grateful if you could share your experience with me! 1. Do we select the schools during the exam, at the beginning? Should I come prepared with my schools' codes? Should I have them written down? I can only select three schools at the day of the test? Could I update my online account with additional schools right after the test, or do I wait for the results? 2. Will they let me take a bottle of water and snacks into the exam room? Or do I come empty-handed and get access to my things during the break? 3. I read on the website that phones are forbidden, did you leave your mobile at phone? Did you bring a watch and left it outside of exam room (they seem forbidden as well)? 4. Any strategy on what to do during 1 minute breaks, except for asking for more paper :)? 5. Do we receive an e-mail from GRE after our scores are officially online, or should we keep checking the website 3 weeks after the exam? Will the Quant and Verbal score show up right after the exam? And is it "prognosed" or fixed, and the only surprise with the official scores will be AWA score? THANK YOU!
  14. Hello! My dream program is PhD in Art History, so I need to take GRE with strong verbal scores. I'm not sure how important is math for them, but I don't want an embarassing score from it either English is not my first language, so I struggle with verbal a bit. I seem to be pretty OK with Reading Comperehension, but the "fill in" sentences are difficult for me. I studied quite a lot for about a month, then took a month break/less intense study (new job, summer...) and I've been studying intensively for the last 2 weeks. My test date is October 15th, but I also signed up for November 10th date in case I need to re-take and improve my scores. I might cancel it if I do well on the first test. I read awesome motivational posts on this forum, about people who studied hard and got 170 scores My intended goal is around 165 for verbal and ideally 160+ for math. I took a practice test yesteday and scored 154 verbal 154 quant, but I did it after the whole day of work and at night, so my brain was not working that great. Do you have any tips and strategies for me, how could I maximize my performance during the month of study until Oct 15th (and possibly another month until November 10)? Especially to improve verbal scores? I know that I need to review basic math for quant and hopefully that'll help, but I have no clue how to get better in verbal. I'm using: -Magoosh videos, questions and flashcards (I got 30day subscription until the end of September. I am not sure yet if I want to extend it to 6month subscription to have Magoosh until my second test's date...what do you think?) -Manhattan verbal textbooks -ETS Official Guide -ETS Verbal Questions Book Do you recommend using ETS essay grading software for 20$, or is it not worth it? THANK YOU!
