Congrats! I am still refreshing email anxiously. Also just saw on Harvard PiN calendar that adcomm meeting is on 12/14.

applying to neuro here. I have also become a victim of constantly checking emails and discovering it just a spam.

Thank you for answering my question!!

I did not realize they will contact people via phone call and I will be out of the country duing the peak of interview notices (12/17-12/28). What should I do if I miss such phone calls and could not respond right away?

I think you probably won't end up needing all the plan B and C's but other things you can do is find a research tech job, which is what I have been doing to boost my chance. I will find out how that works out for me in the spring next year.

Amount of research experience (Undergrad direct to PhD)
cmykrgb replied to kinseyd's topic in Applications
I doubt PhD program view people directly applying from undergrad negatively as it has become common now. The only reason that could be hindering is lack of experience. That being said, it looks like you have sufficient research experience, assuming your other stats are decent or superb you will get into places. I am an applicant this cycle as well so everything I just said could mean nothing. It is based on my friends who applied directly from undergrads.- 6 replies

on the more depressing side, when do you start getting rejections? do you assume to be rejected if you don't hear back around that time?

As the title said, if there's an experience/ publication section in the application, but nowhere to upload a CV except for in additional information section, can/should I upload my CV there? I am asking because I have some works that are conference abstracts rather than actual publications. If i can't upload a CV, what are some ways I can highlight those? Thanks

A friend of mine said her PI told her. Granted there could be many other reasons than just a Trump presidency and we know that guy has very inconsistent policies. Also I am sorry everyone. This is not what this thread intend to be.

I am actually for real. I heard NIH has raised funding threadshold by 4% already.

also in light of this past election, is it possible for grad school to take less students due to possible funding cuts?

right, so if you are hoping that this experience to give a little extra boost to your application, applying this cycle is not gonna help because app's are due before you get anything significant out of it. I went back to look at your profile again, sorry that I only glanced it quickly the first time. I am a very optimistic person, and I think having a master and having several publications already makes you competitive for application this cycle as well. I did mention toefl being low, but on second thought if you do well on verbal gre that can be overlooked as well. Of course higher is still better, so do make sure what the cut off at schools you are applying to is. My conclusion is, it's really up to what you want out of this cancer institute. If you are only getting a job to be busy throughout this year's app cycle, then definitely apply this year. Saves you a year as well, which imo is always good. If you are hoping for a boost in your chance I will stay another year and applying next cycle so you can get more experience and improve test score.

I am not exactly comfortable making suggestions for you. As I said I am an applicant this cycle as well, so I have no experience in the whole process yet. I do know a international students with great stats(3.9 gpa from ivy league, 2 years experience in undergrad) still ended up being accepted in top programs (also rejections from tops as well). I don't think it will hurt if you apply this year, if you are willing to spend the time and money. For me, I am taking 2 years off for research experience to compensate my low gpa. In my opinion one year just to improve gre and toefl can only do so much for you without research experience. How much longer are you planning on staying that research institute? If you decide to wait, it would be much nicer to be working for the whole time until your acceptance than just a few months.

Thank you so much! This is exactly what I needed to hear. I have been looking through faculties and started to cross out schools based on that.

yea I am well aware my gpa is low largely due to organic chemistry, not sure if that matters just a little or screwed for life. Hopefully my research experience can compensate for it. Most my bio courses are in the B to A range. All of my neuro courses are in A range tho. cutting down the school list has been hard for me. All the schools I am interested in seems like either reach or super reach for me because of my gpa. The list is base on my interest in the program + parents' choice (they only care about names)+ trying to accomodate my gf who's applying this cycle as well. I see Icahn as a safety choice because I currently work here. Any thoughts on how I should cut down the schools?
