  1. I'm hoping the reason why @sylviecerise and i haven't heard back yet is hopefully painting & sculpture gets a shitton more applicants. Congrats by the way!!1
  2. Oh that's fucking awesome. So two years ago, there was a protest following the non-indictment for the cop that murdered Eric Garner. The next day, a fellow (not black) installed a sculpture of a KKK outfit with a security camera inside on the spot of the protest to gather reactions. With no context on the spot to explain the "piece." Traumatized black students who's initial reaction was the KKK has a prescence in campus. Refused to apologize and work with black student groups. And brought a lot of discussion about critical engagement in the dt department with no resolution. They also gutted the intermedia department this year, which was the first of its kind. Also was the only department that focused on critical engagement and theory. So.... Iowa def needs people like Tameka on faculty jeeeeesh.
  3. I went to Iowa for undergrad! Painting faculty is awesome, Susan White is my hero! David Ratcliffe is also an awesome faculty. Unfortunately Tameka Norris won't be there next year, but their Grant Wood fellows are always great every year. There's a bunch of bureaucratic bs and politics you have to deal with there tho.... I still live in Iowa City and having access to their art library post grad has been amazing.
  4. Checked Temple portal, says application is "complete and ready for review."
  5. Just searched the forums and looks like people were notified if they were finalists at Tyler around this time last year. My hr monitor is reading 120 right now as I'm sitting. *screams internally*
  6. Anybody else at an artists block and not making much? I've been drawing a bit and reading, just jfc since like May I spent 40-50 hours a week working, and another 30 in my studio. Just completely wiped and kinda want a normal life for a bit. Also the other day I got an email from Pratt and almost panicked, but it was one saying they were reviewing my application.
  7. Strong grad programs in Canada??????? Save me from this fascist hell
  8. Do folks believe that small painting/drawing would be an appropriate gift? Maybe a small plant too idk
  9. Cool, I think I'll check my application status on Tuesday and call or email to be safe.
  10. Also should we start hearing back if we get interview? I may have to turn off gmail notifications on my phone so I don't have anxiety attacks at work.
  11. Everyone that applied to Tyler, how early did you submit the Temple application? I didn't submit everything until the 13th, since the Temple application asked for a statement of goals (which I assumed was the same statement we were to write and attach to slideroom?) I sent my transcripts and my letters of recommendation are done but now I'm psyching myself out that everything wont be processed before they review applications.
  12. Finishing my Tyler painting essay right now, I'm so into that program I'd be psyched if I got in!
  13. Congrats to everyone who submitted to Yale! I submitted to Pratt and Hunter today, it was such a relief to just click it and all the stress (hahaha) be out of my control. On to finishing another essay...
  14. Lol one of my recommenders asked me to finish it so he could submit everything immediately. Another one told me she started, my third one hasn't responded to anything
  15. I'm only applying to three schools, thought I had completed essays for two of them (pretty burnt out to attack the next one) until my roommate pointed out I have a lot of grammar issues. I have two more pieces I need to photograph and add to my portfolio, I want to finish two more and add them before my first application is due if 4 days. Ugh quite a bit overwhelmed right now!
  16. Ah thank you! I was able to comb thru and now I'm just 3 words over, I'm sure no one will care about that.
  17. Anyone have any insight on how strict they are on word counts? Literally I am 25 words over I don't know how to condense it more without omitting some important statements fuck
  18. The faculty, the curriculum, the facilities, network opportunities etc etc. Like the schools I really want to get into, most of them are more affordable then some options but yes I will have to take out loans to go there. But I want to because they have faculty that make work that intrigues me and I really want to work with, they have great buildings and resources, are in good locations, have heavy theoretical curriculum, have a lot of well known visiting artists and critics and all these people you meet can really help you become a better artist and start a career. It just really comes down to the quality of an education you are receiving.
  19. Eh mostly I just have crushingly low self esteem. I probably will just because.
  20. Cool thank you for the recommendation! I probably won't apply to UM tho simply because I grew up near the Twin Cities/have a lot of family there and just need to get away.
  21. At the moment I am only applying to three schools, and I probably should more. My portfolio is painting, but I'm applying to cross discliplinary programs. I'm interested in doing research in mind body duality, gender and disability in relation to the technological age. I study a lot of Yayoi Kusama, Terry Winters, Bridget Riley and Julian Stanczak, along with literature and theory surrounding those concerns. Im flirting with Yale because of Anoka Faruqee, but resistant because i don't have any experience in gallery settings (I'm stuck in Iowa and thanks to class barriers can't really plop myself anywhere else.) Does anyone know of programs I should look at with faculty working in similar thought? Right now my list is Hunter, Pratt and Tyler. Heres a bit from my statement to help contextualize it idk. Two years ago, I began work on a visual narrative as a means of processing my struggle to maintain control over my counteractive mind and body. I approached their antagonism anatomically, studying medical images of MRI scans, chemical compounds of psychiatric drugs, cellular structures, and microbiology all the while, ruminating on escapism. My work has since transitioned from the physicalism of the human body to the human mind and its phenomena. I am especially interested in the contemporary psyche as it inhabits our technological landscape, contextualized by evolutionary history and biology. How has humanity formed from single celled life a separate entity? How do we experience and engage with a complex and global world given that evolutionary past? In my work I engage with this by looking to the internet’s potential to allow experiences beyond immediate physical surroundings and reflect on popular questions posed in the science fiction cannon. I am inspired by the human ability to create narratives to experience and escape our corporeal reality.
  22. I'm working on applying to Hunter, Pratt, SMFA and Tyler. I don't think my portfolio is strong enough to even get interviewed for Yale, but I study a lot of Anoka Faruqee and she is a tenured prof there, it'd be amazing to learn under her. Should I bother and pay the application fee?
  23. I know Hunter has in person interviews the 11th of March. I have a friend in first year at WashU and she wasn't interviewed for admissions, they actually don't do it!
  24. http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-fine-arts-schools/fine-arts-rankings I think that's pretty extensive. What are you planning to apply in?
