Carrying cash while travelling
CoffeeFueledAnxiety replied to virtua's topic in IHOG: International House of Grads
I have traveled abroad a few time carrying quite a bit of cash (within the allowed amount of course). One advise I'd give to anyone is to split your money and save them in a few different places eg. wallet, extra pocket in purse, passport pouch, etc. I haven't had any problem like losing my money or being questioned by officers, etc. However, it is always better to be prepared so that in the case of losing your wallet or any other unfortunate accident, there will always be a backup plan or at least money for you to survive the day. -

Stipends & Cost of Living - How to Compare?
CoffeeFueledAnxiety replied to muskratsam's topic in Decisions, Decisions
I also don't think COL is very helpful in terms of considering your budget. First, the COL will consider the whole city average but not specific area in which you would probably like to live in. If the city is quite big, the different areas COL could vary a bit. Second, I think the COL was built with consideration of a "normal" working families or households, which I don't think really fit the situation of graduate students. Third, it is quite hard to convert their index number onto a dollar based calculation. IMO the better way to consider this is either by asking the current student, or by listing your likely expenses then look for their average pricing around forums like citydata, reddit, or even craiglist. At least people talk in terms of dollars in those forums. -
USC Viterbi - Scholarship information
CoffeeFueledAnxiety replied to bsk's topic in Decisions, Decisions
You did not mention your field or whether you're applying for MS or PhD, so I am not quite so sure how to help. However, I think the best way to find out about this is by contacting the department directly. One of the university I applied to asks for financial information details and proof in the online application platform since I am applying as International student. I was not quite so sure how to fill the forms because I was hoping to fund my studies by TA or GA. I contacted the DGS of the program and she promptly replied me saying that the funding is guaranteed by the program and advised me to leave some of the fields blank. I also contacted the program secretary who then said that she will fill them out for me in the case of acceptance and not to worry about it. So yeah, contact your program's secretary or DGS for further information. They'll be the one who can give you definitive answer for your problem. Hope this helps- 5 replies

I think I've been scammed by World Education Services
CoffeeFueledAnxiety replied to thetons8785's question in Questions and Answers
I used WES few months ago and while their customer service is really just sh*t, I believe they are a legitimate service. Like @I_mix mentioned, they will automatically send one copy of the report to your address. However, if my memory serves me, they do charge you for it. The thing is, you want to be absolutely sure you have sent everything they asked you to in the exact way they asked you to do it. If you do, then you will only have to wait for a few weeks and your transcript evaluation will be done and sent to the address you put on their site. However, if there's any mistakes or if you missed any of their instruction, it could go very bad. Like I said before, their customer service is of no use for anyone. They only reply using generic email and you would get frustrated. The online review will only highlight your anxiety, too. I hope I can say something better, but all you can do if you have sent them everything they need is wait. If you still want to send the transcript to other addresses then just put them in and hope for no refund on the report you did not ask for that will arrive in your mailbox later.- 4 replies

Just finished a Skype interview with SUNY Buffalo and was surprised that it was very laid back and conversational. Now crossing my fingers and starting another round of waiting game. -
