2017 Applicant Profiles and Admissions Results
CoffeeFueledAnxiety replied to Dank's topic in Biology
It is still quite early in the application season. I don't know where are you applying to, but I think only few school have started sending invites. Most of the member here applied to those schools, though, so we see so many people getting invites here. I have not got anything yet, either. It seems that none of my programs started sending out their invites anyway. -
Someone is reading my application right now
CoffeeFueledAnxiety replied to DBear's topic in Waiting it Out
From last years records the programs I am applying to start sending out invites mid January. Knowing this does not help much with my anxiety what with so many people keep getting invites from so many other programs with the same deadline. I am thankful that I have a job keeping me busy during the day, otherwise I would totally be an anxiety-ridden mess by the time January comes. -

Unless the program has a rolling admission system, I don't think that would be the case. I submitted one of my application few hours before the deadline and would like to know if anyone believe otherwise, though. -

Ask questions about the PhD application process!
CoffeeFueledAnxiety replied to blc073's topic in Biology
Hi everyone, my question is a bit more technical. Since some programs put 500 words limit yet still ask for all research experience, I am struggling to fit everything into the limit and have receives some suggestions to use bullet points to at least remove some transitional and filler words smoothly. Is it okay to use bullet points to mention my research experiences with one or two sentences explanation for each? Thanks! -
Biological master with funding?
CoffeeFueledAnxiety replied to CoffeeFueledAnxiety's topic in Biology
Thank you for the information! I definitely wouldn't have found the program without your input. I've looked into it and it seems to be a good program overall. I'll go ahead and request more information from the admission committee regarding the funding opportunities. Thanks again! -

Mostly I am looking to upend my research experience. I have 3.6 GPA, I know it's not very high but I don't think I really need to fret over it much (correct me if I'm wrong, though). I am currently TA-ing for my undergrad advisor. It's a research experience but there is not really much going on in the research and I am thinking of getting experience within the US research scene. I didn't know that those lab tech job are also open for foreigners. I'd be sure to check them out. I don't have J-1 visa yet, though, since I did my undergrad outside of US. I currently only have B1/2 visa. Do you think those uni would be willing to take the hassle of helping me get my appropriate visa for lab tech position? I am also going to check Purdue's Master program, thanks a lot! -
Reading science literature to shape PhD program choice

I'm an international student and like you, I could not find specific classes of interest in my department. In my university I can not even take classes offered by another department. What I did was enrolling myself to online courses in places like Coursera or EdX. They have vast numbers of courses ranging through many different fields. Some of the courses that I found was even taught by very well known researcher and professors from very prestigious schools. They usually also let you know the journal articles or references that everyone with interest should read. Since money is an issue I mostly enrolled without earning certificate, but since the purpose was to know more about the subject, they are pretty much worth it. I don't know if there are any courses in your area of interest but you could try looking at them.
