  1. Would it be poor form to skip out on an interview weekend? I was invited to interview at a program, have a great fit in terms of research interests with the POI, but the interview is very late in the cycle and I'd really like to have made my decision as to where I will attend by then (I do have other reasons but this is one of the bigger ones). I already have offers from my top 2 choice programs, and I am 95% sure that I will end up choosing one of them. Of course I'd email the POI and let them know that I would no longer like to be considered for admittance, but will this reflect poorly upon me? I'm most worried that if I do not go, I will sabotage any future professional relationship I may have with the POI. But I also feel terrible wasting $400 of their funds on travel expenses if my mind is already made up about going elsewhere, and I don't want to take this opportunity away from someone else for whom the program might be their top choice. Would it be in future-me's best interest to just go even if I'm fairly certain I won't attend the program if offered a seat?
  2. I have the same fear!! I've narrowed my decision down to my top 2 choices but I'm terrified of picking the wrong one. I know at this point that there's no such thing as a truly "wrong" choice and I know that I will be happy in either program, but I'm worried that if I don't choose carefully, all of a sudden I will find myself five years from now going down an entirely different path from what I've dreamed of and envisioned for myself. Literally rip rip rip
  3. UW has already extended interview offers.
  4. Shake Shack
  5. I think I would work well with both of them ?
  6. Hi all, I wanted some input on a question that I've been mulling over as of late. Suppose you are trying to decide between two programs. The advisor who you'd be working with at each program is great and their mentorship style is exactly what you're looking for. Both faculty are doing research you are interested in, and you also like both programs pretty equally. Both faculty are publishing frequently and there are a lot of learning opportunities in each lab. Is it better to choose mentor A, who is older and more established in the field (a name that everyone knows), or mentor B who is younger, and is considered a "rising star" (don't know if that's true but that's what her students told me)?
  7. Does anyone have any advice for how to respond to being wait listed? I want to send an email thanking them for considering me but I don't know how to word it/what I should include
  8. Just got the email I was rejected from UIUC :/
  9. To clarify, NYU Steinhardt Applied Psychology interviews are this weekend (feb 9-10). They have invited an initial shortlist of applicants, of whom they will choose about 25% to offer admission to.
  10. Is it normal to have 3.5 hours worth of interviews in one day? I just received an itinerary for a visit coming up this weekend, and I'll be meeting with 7 people, for 30 minutes each. My poor introverted self will be ready to enter a deep, week-long slumber by the end of the day ? ?
  11. @pineapplemangoes @SabDelta If I were you I would invest in a pair of black ankle boots for the weather. But if you did really want to wear flats I think you could make it work if you had to, since I doubt they'll make you suffer through a campus tour in such cold weather.
  12. Do women usually carry purses at interviews? I have two options. One is a small cross-body bag that only has space for basics/essential items. The other is a proper purse large enough to fit a laptop, notebook, folio, umbrella, etc. I don't really like carrying a purse but I'd rather not be the only person without one!
  13. I'd read his most recent pubs but he referenced a 2012 paper! It was rough. I hadn't realized I needed to go that far back. Thank you for the advice on how to recover from that in the future
  14. Thanks! That's generally how I expected it to go, but I had an conversation last week where the POI seemed really unimpressed that I hadn't read a certain paper/was unfamiliar with a certain theory, which really made me question my whole approach to interview prep lol
  15. Do POIs ever ask questions specific to research they've already published? I know it's good practice to read some of their papers ahead of time but I'm going to be meeting with 3 different faculty and don't know how I will be able to keep all the different papers straight (I plan to read multiple articles for each faculty member).
  16. What do you guys do to make yourselves feel better after completely bombing an interview?
  17. I applied to UMN's Personality program. there isn't a personality thread in the forum but I just checked my online portal today and saw I had been rejected
  18. Finally received an email from my POI at NYU! Requesting an interview
  19. Some schools do not allow students to defer enrollment. Though I am sure that in a case like this one with the Visa ban, they would look upon it more favorably as it is completely out of the student's control. I'm sorry about this happening to you, @psycho.logical The US is a scary place for people of color right now. Do know I stand with you. Side note - as a student, I'm also terrified that federal funding towards organizations like NSF will be suspended (essentially continuing to spread from the NEA, NEH, and EPA) and none of us will receive adequate funding for graduate school.
  20. Thanks! And me neither, they just feel stuffy and I never feel confident in them
  21. Did anyone apply to the human development program at Cornell?
  22. and it's not looked down upon to be reading from a list when speaking to a faculty member?
  23. How do you guys remember all the questions you want to ask?
