    Great questions. I want to continue developing feminist critiques of state power and security. My work draws on transnational feminisms and black feminist theories of the human to critique state violence done in the name of nation-building.
    My dream program is NYU, because I've seen some work being done there on security and sovereignty which lines up with my work.
    What about you, @NoirFemme?

    Both of your projects make me think of Demonic Grounds: black women and the cartographies of struggle.

    @noirFemme thanks thats nice of you to say. I hope after this is all done some of us can meet up at ASA to share what we have learned from our programs lol. As a nontraditional student myself being a few years older than many I definitely hoping to do things to empower students and to facilate the PHd process being easier and more justice centric. And yes I would love to learn more about your research as well. I am always wanting to learn about things that are not in my wheel house especially as it concerns the African diaporsa as I have many gaps to fill in my knowledge.

    Carrying over from my start in Geography, I wish to study race, space and place in a primarily contemporary American context but understanding how these concepts are linked transnationally and historically to colonialism, slavery and capital accumulation through empire building. I privilege a cultural study based approach that uses popular culture to examine the intersects of race and masculinity hoping to eventually explore the tension between culture and economy. Additionally, I am foundationally interested in understanding how knowledges are shaped, validated and contested, how knowledge is affixed to bodies, places and abstract concepts.
    My dream programs are Michigan and Yale but I think I could make my project work in any of the programs I have applied to. And yourself?

    To get back on topic a bit--what work are you doing in American Studies that you want to explore at the graduate level?
    What is your dream program and why?

    The easiest way to figure out which professors are working in your field is to read academic journals and books. Do you have access to JSTOR? Search for your topics of interest and pay attention to where the authors teach or were taught.

    Hello! I thought I would start a thread for women's/feminist/gender studies applicants for fall 2017 to share stories, provide support, etc!
    I am so nervous... I have applied to four phd programs: emory, ucsc, ucla, and stonybrook, and 3 american studies phd programs: yale, harvard, and nyu. I really want to get in somewhere!! This application process has been so stressful, I'd hate to have to do it again. Where are y'all applying? How has the application process been for you?

    That's a good point, the regime is likely going to have more substantial effects on programs after its already been in power for a bit.
    Apparently trump's transition team has just asked the state department to report all info on positions, programs, and funding within the state department that are related to women's and gender issues: programs that “promote gender equality, such as ending gender-based violence, promoting women’s participation in economic and political spheres, entrepreneurship, etc.”

    Who knows what they're planning.
    @NoirFemme welcome!
