Congrats everyone who got into Irvine! If it wasn't a rejection for me before I'm sure it is now, haha. At this point I'm happy for everyone getting in, but also just waiting for all my rejections so I can get over it and work on improving my app for next year.

I'm already pretty sure I won't be getting in this year. I just want all the rejections in so I can have a weekend to mope and pull myself together instead of dragging it out.

@GreenEyedTrombonist that's true, I think there are any number of fields that I can pursue my research interests - sociology, literature, anthropology....  But after doing my MA in English and trying to research identity construction there, I just found the subtle differences in approach a bit stifling to be honest. I like how interdisciplinary Communication is. I feel like it will be a bit more flexible. Either way, awesome Buffy paper, here we come!!

Okay, fair enough.. Going through this cycle though, do you think you'll be applying for both Anthropology and Communication again if you're really done with this one? I really get a Communication vibe from your research interests (maybe because they're so close to what I like)... we could co-author a Buffy paper!! I guess we could still do that if you went down the Anthro path... but still...

I still don't know how notifications are sent out - I've been trying to see what the trend is, but I don't think there really is one, so keep up hope until you actually get the notification @GreenEyedTrombonist Some schools don't send out their admits all at once, it seems.
Seems like ad comms are finally starting to send out notifications in earnest now. So either way, we'll be done with this cycle soon enough and I really really really really hope that we will be happy with the results..!!!!

Got an unofficial acceptance to Irvine from my POI late last night! Offers to be sent out very soon! Crazy happy!

Congrats @ejpril88! That sounds like an awesome conversation. Overall, Davis's area of California isn't that expensive. More than many places in the US, but not bad for California. My sis and her husband actually live 20 minutes from Davis and have managed, as 2 young professionals under 30, to purchase a home in the area (brother-in-law is now 30, but they bought their home way before his birthday). I actually expect I'll be visiting the area quite often since my sis just announced her pregnancy.

I had an amazing conversation with a POI from UC Davis today  it was such a self confidence booster! He emailed me first, saying he would like to get to know me better and then we talked for half an hour over the phone.
This was my first direct contact with US faculty and I am absolutely thrilled. In Serbia I had to chase professors down the hallway if I had a question, so this was a really nice change. He repeated several times that he hopes I will accept their offer and I was honest with him about funding being a major issue for me. I should get an email with funding details tomorrow, can't wait!
The professor also asked me what other schools I've applied to and told me I was one of their top candidates. The Comm department accepts 4-8 PhD students every year and the majority of them are international, which I like.
So I guess I will have to wait and hope for the best. California is so expensive and also it will be so hard to choose between UC Davis and Purdue, which is a great school as well.
I hope this is going to be over soon. I am still waiting for 4 more answers. Good luck everyone!

Just got an email from the Chair at ASU's Human and Social Dimensions of Science and Technology (HSD) program! First acceptance! Anyone know a lot about STS programs or about this school? I applied on a whim.

From a social science perspective, I'd go with USC's funding. The possibility of censorship on research is just too much in my opinion. I also enjoy TA/RA jobs so that's not really a negative from my point of view, haha. I'd just be very gracious in how I refuse the government grant and you don't necessarily even need to bring up the censorship issue. USC is offering you more with more options to increase your funding and, when living in LA, that makes a huge difference.

So I may have an interview at UCL. I was contacted by my POI a couple days ago requesting my dissertation before having a Skype interview. Problem is, I'm currently writing my grad report, so I don't exactly have a dissertation to show yet. x]
I let him know that today and did offer to share my main deliverable which is written, but we'll see I guess.
Outside of academia, my sister finally publicly announced her pregnancy so now I get to tell everyone I'm going to be an auntie! *Dances*
Also, today seemed to be a good day. A friend offered to co-write a presentation with me, taking over as lead author, so that I can do 3 presentations at a conference instead of 2 (if all of my abstracts are accepted). All 3 are different presentation formats and I'm really looking forward to doing them.

@EvelynD Absolutely nothing. I do know things have happened for 2 of the programs I applied to (interviews at one, acceptances at another), but I haven't heard from either so it's probably waitlist/rejection for me at those schools.

I'm a high-functioning anxious individual, so it could be worse, but I'm definitely feeling the anxiety. I've stocked up on chocolate, haha.

I love NCIS. I love chocolate. And I know how you feel, I think we all do. Even seeing people being accepted into completely unrelated fields made me anxious and was a bit unsettling. But yeah, I almost went crazy... Let's worry about the career force thing after the fat lady sings.

As a US citizen, I just want to say I hope this gets resolved soon. Our borders should never be closed to someone because of their race, religion, country of origin, etc. <3 to all of you international applicants who are dealing with this on top of the anxiety of waiting to hear back from programs and planning out your futures.
