Deleted because I just realized I'm posting in the religion thread, which I know absolutely nothing about. Sorry!

Hi all, just figured that since it's getting close to the end of February some Masters programs related to HCI are going to start releasing their results over the next few weeks. (Programs like CM MHCI, UW HCDE & MHCI+D, IUB HCI/d, Georgia Tech MS-HCI, UCI M.S. Informatics, UMich MSI, etc.) On the results page, I noticed that UC Berkeley's iSchool has already released decisions for Information and Management Systems, so I thought it might be better to have a consolidated thread for people applying to fields related to the topic to share results directly or talk about profiles since there doesn't seem to be a ton of us around. Are there a lot of engineers? Researchers? Designers? Curious what everyone's background is. A bit about myself: I'm hoping to do user research (with a focus on international UX/multilingual UI systems) if accepted, and just spent 4 years working in tech after doing undergrad in psychology. I can do some basic programming/design, but nothing fancy. Really hoping that work experience is emphasized in a lot of these professional/terminal masters programs, but I'd love to hear about the backgrounds of others interested in HCI/Information.

Do you think with the new presidency this year and immigration problems, adcomms have been trying to delay decisions/increase deliberation time in order to make sure they don't run into trouble with the number of invites they send out? Could be a factor for international students.

@bellis Honestly, both programs sound great but they have very different pros/cons. I've heard MHCI+D current and former students say they felt and/or heard HCDE is too slow/outdated, but on the other hand I've heard HCDE is highly regarded in research and much more connected with industry/academia in terms of faculty. It really depends which factors I end up making my decision on, like the fact that my SO doesn't like the rainy weather in Washington so 1 year might be better for us and that I'm mostly interested in user research/testing. One of the reasons I applied to both programs is because I saw myself fitting in with either format and haven't 100% made up my mind which one is a better fit. If I do get in, I'd choose to attend full time. Did you apply for just HCDE this time around?

Always good to meet other people in the same situation! Kind of hard explaining to people around me why I would go back to school because it's not a very common thing in Japan. Ugh I just finished traveling through China for a bit over the last several weeks, and not having internet access towards the tail end of the application season has made me an absolute mess. Not to mention the late night calls to the U.S. and everything... Really puts into perspective how tough it is for international students to apply to schools in a foreign country. I'm also lucky enough that I can apply as a native speaker of English (just in Asia for work), but I can imagine how harrowing the experience might be for people who want to study in the U.S. with the current political climate.

These are all great points. Really hoping that for MA/MS programs (I didn't apply for PhD programs) will focus on the fit aspect as well, since I understand these programs are often less about research fit with a particular lab or professor as opposed to future career goals, diversity, industry experience, etc. Also, part of me is hoping that they're still getting to the MA/MS applicants on the admission committee since PhDs (and deciding where funding goes) would probably be more important, but not sure if this is even a thing.

@bbobear I know how it feels trying to get in -- I'm switching from a different field also so I do have my own fair share of worries. I actually had a few UX testing/research opportunities lined up but I ended up dropping them to prioritize school. (Needed a break from work to be honest.) If I don't get in, there's always next year and I can find work for another year to keep me going. Let me know if you ever want to share resources about UX and stuff. Happy to chat and talk to another applicant!

I see! That makes sense, and I really appreciate you chiming in to relieve my worries. Luckily, I did manage to resolve my issue, and I can only hope it didn't put me too far behind the rest of the complete apps. I guess most schools put emphasis on making sure students get in all their documents, but it's just a fact of life that sometimes things happen with transcripts or LORs. I'm guessing that they might sort complete and incomplete into different stacks though administratively? I.e. A good candidate with an incomplete app might go into a separate pile from top picks / first round rejects, and probably dealt with on a slightly less priority basis than initially complete apps. Just a thought, and most schools probably do it differently depending on # of applicants and selectivity.

I think decisions for MHCI+D and HCDE will be coming out, at earliest, late February and early March judging by the results from 2016/2015 on this website. Best of luck to you two and I'm waiting on results from these programs as well @bbobear You mentioned working in UX already, mind me asking a little bit about what kind of stuff? IxD? User researching/testing?

@CaffeineCardigan Hello, fellow Japan-er! (Couldn't think of a better way to phrase that...) I totally feel your pain and frequently end up getting up way in the morning to check emails. I actually ended up having some application issues and spent a few nights calling schools in California... Staying up until 3AM to make calls is definitely not the most fun, but I guess that's what happens. Quick question though: I would assume most programs notify people by email or phone these days, so would snail mail actually be a factor for you? If the school is nice enough they might expedite the shipment, but I can imagine that being tortuous.

So the school that I felt I submitted the strongest app have said that they're still processing documents. On the application tracker, they're telling me they haven't received my official transcript (sent Dec. 2nd) which I confirmed was sent by my undergrad institution. Admittedly, they told us not to contact them for now but I did anyway since I was worried. They said it shouldn't be that big of a problem and I could send them an unofficial copy for now. Still, the application online says incomplete, and I've heard horror stories about committees not even bothering to look at applications that aren't complete. I've also heard of people getting in to with only 2/3 LoRs for similar programs (only applied to masters). Is anyone in the same boat or does anyone know people who have been in this situation?
