Happy to chat about this if you have questions - I have a MS in Criminal Justice and a JD. It really just depends what you want to do with your career.

I was admitted to a PhD program unfunded. My acceptance letter explicitly mentions that it is relatively common that funds cannot be offered initially, but often funds are available for at least the first year of the program. I have other applications I'm waiting on, as well as some other options I'm weighing. How long should I wait to find out if I'm going to receive funding or not before declining admission? How did you make the decision on when to decline based on funding (or acceptances to other programs)?

For everyone who got into GMU - have you received information on the open house yet, (outside of the RSVP link?) Have you been communicating with the professor you want to work with, or another professor? You can PM me! I'm just confused about what's going on over there.

George Mason decisions have started coming out.

At least for counseling, I think they've all been extended. I have no idea about clinical though.

The waiting game . . . how is everyone distracting themselves?

Question - Did your status update from "Application Complete - Ready to be Reviewed" to something else prior to getting an interview invite? I'm trying to figure out if they just haven't looked at mine yet or if I wasn't selected for an interview.

I applied to a different program there and it's something main office had to do! it'll eventually get resolved once they go through the initial processing in the graduate admin office before shipping off to the dept.

I'm only applying to one, but that's the only psych I'm applying to. Just hiding in the background here ?

Just wanted to add in a note that I applied to Southern Miss (counseling). I'm only applying to one psych program as I'm at an interesting point in my life where I know where I want to end up and can get there one of three ways. I'm also applying to a criminology phd program. I'm basically only applying to the two PhDs that are exactly what I'm looking for and if I get in, I can figure out if I want to follow either one of those paths instead of the one I'm currently on. If anyone's interested in more of my internal crisis, let me know BEST OF LUCK TO EVERYONE!

You should be able to tell by reviewing the info on the results page and see if there were interviews or not. George Mason doesn't do interviews from what I could tell. Also, wanted to throw my hat in the ring. I'm applying to George Mason - with a focus on correctional policy. If anyone wants my stats, let me know. I'm only applying to two programs this cycle (mason for criminology, and southern miss for counseling psych) because I'm in an interesting boat where my eventual goal isn't concrete and I could get there by one of three ways. @ElizabethIsGolden - I graduated with my JD and a master's in CJ last December through a self-created program I was able to work out with my school and one of my friends from law school is currently getting her MS in library sciences, so message me if you have any questions.

Hey Mopar, if you don't mind me asking, what policy program(s) did you applying to? I'm planning on applying next cycle and my interest is correctional policy related. As a side note, does anyone actually have a list of all the current CCJ PhD programs? I know sociology programs might offer it, but I'm still stuck on JUST trying to nail down all the possible CCJ programs. Best of luck to everyone on applications!! I hope you all get funded offers!

@topsailpsych I'm definitely worried about every aspect, especially GRE and research. It's a long process. I don't envy you for having to comb through that many programs. It's so tough making such a serious decision and I wish you the best of luck in narrowing your list!

@ellieotter @8BitJourney -- Thanks!!! I'll be sure to PM if I have any questions. I'm applying to Southern Miss as a bit of a "why not" moment in my life. I applied to psych master's programs prior to ending up in law school and got super frustrated with the process and ended up not following through with 2 interviews after I got waitlisted on my first choice. It was always my goal to end up in a correctional/forensic psych and JD was my fall back. Long story short on how I've decided to apply --- my JD pushed me into some work that really highlighted the issues I'd love to work on regarding correctional mh care (i.e., improving risk assessments, increasing the quality of care via alt methods like telepsych, targeted counseling for solitary, etc.) but I assumed I couldn't get into a psych program (b/c of research experience). After diving through and finding the options for correctional policy programs are pretty scarce, I spoke with a former prof who pointed out that I should be somewhat competitive for a PhD with a JD, sooo why not? I'd apply to more, but law school sucks and monetarily that's not an option.

Hi all! I know there's a general Fall 2018 thread, but I wanted to make a counseling specific one (since there's fewer of us). I'm only applying to one program (I know) - but my potential POI is in the exact geographic and subject area I'm interested in. Even doing some research that I've only dreamed about. Plus, I'm a bit of a transition student. I was psych undergrad but haven't touched it since. GRE: Average - 155+Q&V. Undergrad GPA - 4.0 Grad GPA (Masters in CJ) - 4.0 also, graduating from law school this December (FINALLY) around top 25% of my class. Too bad it took longer than first year to figure out I shouldn't have gone to law school. Tell me about you! Schools? Research Interest? Worries? Personally, I'm worried my JD will hurt my application, instead of hurt. My research interest is an intersection of psych, CJ, and law - but lawyers have a bad reputation.

It's officially started btw!!! I'm only applying to one program (who already has their 2018 application open..) I've had a bit of a complicated path, but I'm hoping that I'm still competitive. Now I just get to wait until Dec. to find out about an interview... Best of luck to everyone!!!

Hi all! Long-time guest viewer of The GradCafe. I'm also cross-posting this thread from Criminology since some universities have criminology/CJ topics included under their sociology PhDs. A little about me - I'm currently getting both a Master's in CJ and a J.D. (from a T1 school) and I'll graduate in Dec 2017. My Master's GPA is currently 4.0 with a law GPA right around the top 1/3rd of the class (3.4ish). My undergrad was a BA in Psychology and I graduated summa. I've figured out, like a few others classmates I know, that I don't actually want to use my law degree to practice law, but it's too late to drop out. Law school has pushed me into an area of study (through summer positions) that I thoroughly enjoy. I would love to pursue this field within a PhD program and continuing academia ,but I've found a road block. I'm interested in prison policy - specifically prison healthcare policy and potential impacts of bad prison healthcare on the community. So far, I've found very few PhD programs that have faculty in this area. After speaking to a mentor, he's pointed me toward focusing on public policy programs at schools that also have criminal justice/criminology faculty that have prison connections since this is an under-studied area. I've stumbled across one program so far that has faculty in their CJ department doing research in my area (George Mason). I guess I'm reaching out to you all to see if you've seen any similar areas of study in your search for a program or if you have any general tips about finding a PhD program. I have a list of all programs (I believe) that offer PhDs in CJ/Criminology, but adding in a public policy consideration aspect is a bit harder.
