  1. In most cases, PhD programs don't admit without some kind of interview (whether it be a formal interview weekend or phone/skype). I applied last year also and didn't hear from 9 out of the 10 I applied to until around March when I got the official rejection letter (i.e., after everyone had accepted their admissions offers and their new cohort was set). If your schools haven't specifically told you about a waitlist I wouldn't count on it. Heck, even after I interviewed at my one school last year, they said they'd let us know in two weeks, and I never heard about an offer or a waitlist until I contacted the DCT and he said due to the number of people ahead of me I should make other plans because I wasn't getting an offer. This of course is my experience applying to clinical programs, and social may be different, but I hope that provides at least a little bit of clarity. It's still early though, I hope one of your programs ends up working out for you!!
  2. Other than trying to strategically buy your plane tickets (e.g., google flights, day of the week, buying two one-way tix, clearing your browsing history/cookies or using incognito), I'm not sure there's a way around this. Personally, it's a situation where I have to bite the bullet so to speak and dip into my savings. One of my interviews is drivable which I'm very thankful about, but this process has been financially exhausting. Hopefully your programs offer housing with graduate students like mine do, otherwise I don't think I'd be able to go to all of them.
  3. I didn't know about this site until last year, while I was attending the one and only interview I was offered. All of the other applicants were talking about their schedules for all of their interviews and I felt awful because I didn't get any others, and could only suspect I wasn't getting more since none of my schools wrote to decline my application and I didn't know about this forum. Basically, radio silence from 9 out of 10 schools from December 1 to mid March. Obviously, I didn't end up getting an offer at that one school, so here I am, a year later, applying to an additional 10 schools. The difference is I've been through this before, I knew what changes I wanted to make, and I was able to add to my CV with an additional year of working. Like missfleur said, this forum is not as great as it might seem...you don't know all the details, people aren't necessarily forthcoming (nor do they have to be) about how they got to a point of having x many interview offers, and everyone's path is going to look different. I'm not sure of "most," but a lot of people have to apply during multiple cycles before they find their golden ticket. I can't stress this enough: the application process for psychology PhD is idiosyncratic at best. Even tremendously qualified students will get rejected because there simply aren't enough spots to accept all of them. Your figure of 6 schools doesn't really matter so much as the quality of fit between you and that school and the professors you identified as potential mentors. Above all else, fit is the most important factor and personally I feel that is the difference between my first set of applications and my second. Furthermore, this is a really classist process and not everyone can afford to apply to 10-20 schools. Personally, I think this process needs an overhaul. Now, it sounds like you still have a couple more schools left. Your luck may change! All you need is one interview. If, however, that doesn't happen, it's gonna suck, but just know that there's always next year! If this is what you want, you'll make it happen.
  4. All I've heard from them was that my general GRE score was missing even though they had my Psych GRE, and that they then received it from testing services. This was on January 3rd, so their review process must just start later than the others I applied to. Not the end of the world but frustrating nonetheless!
  5. Just out of curiosity, does anyone happen to have an idea of when SIU-Carbondale may be sending around interview invites? It's the last school hanging over my head and I'm itching to have a sense of closure on this part of the process!
  6. School: University of Houston Type: PhD (Clinical, Adult) Date of invite: 1/9/18 Type of invite: Email from POI, with a phone call made the following day Interview date(s): 2/9-2/10 School: University of North Carolina Greensboro (UNCG) Type: PhD (Clinical) Date of invite: 1/10/18 Type of invite: Initial phone interview with POI, followed by an email two days later with an invitation to the formal interview days. Interview date(s): 2/7 or 2/9
  7. The volume of posts asking for POIs is a little bit of a deterrent for me, but I still did want to share some info. For NIU folks, I got an email from POI with an interview offer. However, attachments included a letter from DCT and info for travel arrangements. Whether or not all POIs made decisions/sent them yet I can't say, but the program did set their deadline for notifications for next week. Emails could still be going out this week https://teamup.com/ks952632ef38687f3e I posted this somewhere in the forum previously but here it is again, if it helps anyone. Unrelated, but I've heard that interviews for UNCG could be going out as early as this week as well. Good luck everyone!
  8. I'm not entirely sure about "overly" excited, but you should definitely be enthusiastic and engaged, but still composed. All about the balance! Regarding the marathon interviewing, part of the game is always having to be "on." Even in informal settings with grad students, they can and will report back anything you do. If you're a great guest that can help, but even though this should go without saying, don't do anything egregious! Prepare ahead of time so that you aren't fatigued or mess up your sleep pattern, especially if you're traveling. Bring protein bars and take a bathroom break when you can and recompose yourself. Be yourself and let your personality shine through! And remember, these weekends are for you to get to know the program, lab, and students/mentors, so you should be asking questions. Plus, that's a good way to deflect if you're feeling nervous.
  9. I can't even begin to express how important this is. Imposter syndrome starts in immediately. I actually felt more comfortable with current grad students and in interviews than I did with other applicants. Tune it out best you can.
  10. Hi folks... Would you guys be interested in having a separate thread for people requesting POI information? I know everyone (myself included) is antsy about hearing from their chosen programs but this thread is starting to get a little cluttered now that interview offers are beginning to roll in. What do you think?
  11. School: SUNY Albany Type: Clinical Psychology PhD Date of invite: 12/19/17 Type of invite: Voicemail and email from POI Interview date(s): 03/02/18 - 03/04/18 (actual interview day is 3/03/18) Feel free to PM me if you have a question
  12. The fact of the matter is you can't be two places at once (unless you know something I don't!). I have not had this experience as an applicant, but I will offer you an anecdote from the other side: The hospital I work at has an APA accredited internship whose director I helped with some administrative tasks as a favor... One candidate was offered an interview but it conflicted with a different interview, so she outright declined. Another applicant was offered an interview; she responded that she was unable to make those dates but she was really interested and was there any way a phone/video interview could be conducted, and so the directors interviewed her by videoconference. It is my experience that at this level, everyone understands scheduling conflicts, particularly for competitive applicants. What you do is ultimately up to you, but there are two things to keep in mind: 1) how you frame your response matters and 2) the only other alternative to maybe being at a disadvantage by a long distance interview is taking yourself out of the running altogether. The important thing here is that you got these interviews, and that's something to be proud of! Congrats
  13. Could I second all of these? Any info about Toledo, Wyo, and/or Kentucky would help. Please and thanks! Also, not for nothing, I found this calendar that CUDCP schools use, so I'm hoping I still have a week for Toledo: https://teamup.com/ks952632ef38687f3e Hopefully it's useful to anyone who might not have seen it yet.
