You're having an awesome week. Congratulations! Are one of the schools you've heard from a top choice of yours?

I got my first set of course evaluations back today. This is the first time I've ever taught a course as the instructor of record. The course consisted of me teaching two classes of 30 psych students how to use the statistical software SPSS. I'm not entirely sure how to determine how I faired. For my overall instructor score, I got a 4.61 and a 4.63. There weren't any awful comments or anything like that. At most, there were a few comments about having more grades in the class and making the midterm worth less. However, I don't have much control over how the course runs. Would these scores be considered good? bad? okay? I read an article that said professors shoot for above a 4.7, but I'm not sure if that's accurate. Any guidance on interpreting course evaluations would be helpful.

I think a couple of us applied for UVA's quant program. I feel you, it is difficult to enjoy time off while waiting.

Wouldn't it be fantastic to live in Europe for a period? Would it be a French pastry chef? You know, I've secretly (or not so secretly) always wanted to open a pub. I thought it would be the coolest place ever. I LOVE your restaurant idea

I like this idea of World Schooling. You're only young once! I had an advisor who didn't get into a Ph.D. first go around, and she taught English in China for a year. Talk about World Schooling!

Hi guys, I think we could go with some entertainment mixed in with some good advice. Therefore, I made this thread. I'm thinking everyone should identify their "best" backup and their "craziest" backup plans (doesn't have to be feasible in the slightest; in fact, it is probably better if it isn't) for if this application season is a bust. Hopefully, some of the crazy will be amusing, and some of the best will be helpful. Best: Take a position I've been informally offered as a predoctoral fellow for a health research center that my advisor's husband is employed at. Crazy: You know that movie where the guy gets rejected from universities as an undergraduate and he makes his own school, I'm just saying...

I'm starting to realize I didn't have enough Christmas plans. I decided to take a week or so off from working on publications and my thesis ( haven't had a real break in months), but I now have way too much time on my hands. What about you guys? Anyone doing something fun and exciting that is making the wait more tolerable?

Fall 2018 Psych PhD Interviews (not clinical)
Quantitative_Psychology replied to vallaboop's topic in Psychology Forum
Have you seen the school posted in the results survey? If not, I would try to avoid getting too anxious about it (I know, it is impossible). Most schools haven't sent out invites yet (an exception possible in Clinical though, they seem crazy on top of invites). I've only heard from 1/9 of the schools I applied to. -
Social, developmental, and maybe Health. Of course, UCLA has so many different areas in their psych department, it isn't all that surprising.

Anyone hear anything from UCLA yet? I know some areas have sent out invites already, but I heard other areas won't until mid-January. Other than the email I received on Wednesday about my application having been received, I've heard nothing.

Fall 2018 Psych PhD Interviews (not clinical)

I got that same email. I was both annoyed and relieved at the same time. It had been a worry that I hadn’t heard anything yet (historically they send invites by now), but with how nightmarish that Application was, I’m not surprised. -
That sounds like a great idea. It’s nice of your POI to give you a heads up on what he/she wants go talk about. I’ve heard it’s not bad idea to enlist a friend or mentor to do a mock Skype interview to make you comfortable with the format. I’ll probably do this if I get one.

How exciting! I'm really stoked for you. UNC is a great program!!! What are you doing to prep for the skype interview? I've never had one. Do you mind PMing me your POI from Vanderbilt? That's fantastic news! Congratulations!!! Are you doing anything special to prep for the skype interview?

I do think it is worth keeping in perspective that there have actually been very few schools sending out invites at this time. For example, I've heard from 1/9 schools, and I was shocked to have already heard from that 1. It is also worth noting that if they haven't reviewed their applications yet (or very soon) there will be a decrease in the number of invites going out until after New Years because the schools will take off.

Fall 2018 Psych PhD Interviews (not clinical)

I heard from UC Davis for Quant Psych, but I got the impression the different areas are doing their own thing. I'm also under the impression UCLA hasn't sent out any official invites for anything yet (although this might be my hopeful thinking). The little contact I've heard about from UCLA has been very informal skype stuff, not official invites. -
Hearing conflicting info regarding GRE scores
Quantitative_Psychology replied to Rtw12345's topic in Psychology Forum
If I were you, I would keep in mind that many of the people responding to you in these forums are in the same boat as you trying to navigate applications. Also, I would say take anything that is said on these forums with a grain of salt because a lot of different factors could influence the opinions expressed. 1) Some I/O programs care more about quant scores than others, 2) This could just be hearsay from different professors and mentors that aren't actually part of the admissions for these programs, and 3) There might be some other aspect of your application that could offset the scores that are not currently being taken into account. I'm not saying that the information you received from the forum is wrong (I personally have no idea), but I would probably put more stock in what the current graduate students at the program are saying. They would know more about that specific program than anyone. -

Just a heads up, I've received an interview invite for UC Davis (approximately 10 minutes ago). The email came from the Graduate Program Coordinator, and a majority of the information was not personalized. If anyone is curious who my POI is, I'm happy to PM. I'm so excited!

I finished my last final on Tuesday. Now I have plenty of time to sit around and think about whether I'll get any offers. Anyone else caving to the anxiety? Anyone hear anything from any programs yet?

I was going to wait until I get an invitation to prep for interviews. I have had a professor offer to help me practice skype interviews which are more likely to occur in December/January. I'll admit I'm pretty nervous about initial phone calls and skype interviews because I've never actually had one before. My master's program didn't require it.
