As of last week a professor of mine who knows people there on the admission's committee said that they are still deliberating, and he wasn't given a prospective date for when they might be done. I don't know what exactly that is supposed to tell any of us, but at least it's information...

A reliable source tells me that HPS has sent out at least one acceptance, but I am not sure whether it is specific to the same POI who rejected that guy who posted (apparently they are doing personalized letters this year). But I don't know much more, and am also waiting to hear back. :'(

Hello everyone, my name's Colin and I was a 2016 applicant. Now, my M.A. is almost done, and it's time to reapply for Ph.D.

I've been through this process once, made some mistakes, hopefully learned from them, and am happy to offer you any help, advice, or assistance you need!

But first of all, who all is applying in 2018? How far along in the process are you?

Remind your friends who have offers too. Those who are most likely to sit on offers needlessly (opting to reply last minute or for the offer to expire) are less likely to see these pleas for help here. If you know someone who has 3 or more offers, tell them they need to be considerate of the admissions committee and for those who are on the waitlist.

Just a friendly reminder to decline your offers you know you won't take. I know for a fact that people sit on offers needlessly every year (or almost every year). Things get very, very complicated and frustrating, for both applicants and programs, on April 15th—best to alleviate that as much as we can!

It may not be on their website, but they have indeed had people go on to PhD programs in philosophy- I know they have alums at Berkeley (who got a good number of acceptances and waitlists), CUNY, Riverside... I believe they also have someone who's at Tennessee? Kansas? All within the last 4 years. Though note that most of the Bioethics students at NYU are not actually pursuing academic Philosophy long-term, so it's hard to tell what percentage of students who do want to go on to PhDs succeed.
*edited to add* they also have an alum doing a PhD at Johns Hopkins, though I think it's in Bioethics or public health

And others waiting on UNC: One of our current first-years was in the position last year where he had heard nothing from UNC up until the week of the 15th. He was about to accept an offer somewhere else when one of his professors encouraged him to email UNC. He did and was told that they were waiting on a decision from one other person and to wait out a little longer. I believe he ended up getting accepted the morning of the 15th. I recommend that if you have not heard anything you email UNC *close* to the deadline to get some sense of your standing. We do things a bit differently, and whether or not is the best way is really beside the point at this moment. Sorry, this process really does suck. Hang in there.

They don't have a page specifically for 'placement' history, but they do have a list of past students and what they have gone on to do. I looked through them and found that most people took the MA as a terminal degree, going on to do other stuff. Some went into law or medicine. The closest to (and the only one really relevant to) academic philosophy is someone who is doing/did a PhD in Bioethics at Cambridge (UK).
Still hoping for my Irvine waitlist to magically collapse into an offer - then I don't have to worry about all these other options!

I feel it's my duty to share this article with anyone who has been admitted to UC-Berkeley (or might be admitted off the waitlist). Not gonna comment beyond that since this article is my only familiarity with the situation:

Officially waitlisted at Irvine's LPS program - ~60 students applied, ~1/3 were offered admissions, exactly 21 students on an unordered waitlist. A 'small subset of applicants' from the waitlist might be offered admissions depending on how the offer holders turn out. May the quantum chances favor me...

I've been stumped by the practice of hidden waitlisting. You say it's because if these students were explicitly waitlisted, they would have to be offered funding for a prospective visit. I wonder how standard of a practice that is. My impression was that the majority of schools don't fund waitlisted candidates to visit. In my limited experience being waitlisted, USC doesn't fund all waitlisted candidates to visit, while Princeton does fund at least some. I personally would appreciate being explicitly waitlisted and not given funding to visit more than being kept on a hidden waitlist.
And, of course, if UNC has divided the remaining candidates into those who are on a hidden waitlist and those who are rejected, they could still send out the rejections (though that might ruin the hiddenness for those candidates that check these forums and such).
