  1. Hey everyone! I'll be in the MFA program at SU in the fall. The info here has been very helpful but I have a couple more questions!

In undergrad I had to find my housing for the next year the spring before. What is the timeline like for Syracuse? Do I need to go visit ASAP and find a place to live before all the good ones go or will I be able to find a place as easily next month?

I have spent my fair share of time living with a roommate and would like to get my own place, ideally a one bedroom. Is it possible to find a clean, safe place walking distance from campus for $600 or under? It does not have to be anything fancy!

I know of Orange Housing but are there any other good places to look for apartment listings?

Any other general advice anyone has would be awesome! I def want something far away from any crazy undergrads  Thank you!

Could you all share the programs you know about that offer a full tuition scholarship + stipend? Looking for next year. Thanks!

UAlbany- it is a state school in NY with a small interdisciplinary program. They offer 40% tuition discount and a stipend that covers the rest of tuition with a little left over. It isn't a well known art school but if you want a Masters degree for free you can get it here.

So, uh, idk what anyone else is talking about but Columbia College is well known for their Photography program in particular.  Dawoud Bey is the head of their department right now, IIRC? Also, personally, I think choosing CC looks a little more "with it" on a resume; like everybody knows RISD is good, but Columbia College looks special.  Going to a lesser-known yet known-for-being-fantastic program vs. one everybody applies to by default?  I'm not sure if I'm making sense, and maybe this doesn't matter to anybody else.

As a photographer I'd have no reservations choosing Columbia College here, personally.  I think, however, RISD leans toward a very technological direction and has been doing this techie/green/science slant lately so if that's what you do then you're going to get a lot of great support to do that.

Fellow photographer here- I would 100% choose Columbia. They have a fantastic photo program and IT"S FREE!! Who can say no to that!?

Is anyone graduating from their BFA in June? I keep being rejected and am wondering if the fact that I am applying whilst completing my undergrad is working against me. Could this be a factor?

Throughout my portfolio reviews, tours and meetings professors always asked when I graduated from undergrad (2015). Graduate programs want you to take time off to prove you can make your own work. Many people consider your undergraduate work and thesis as a product of your school. They want to see if you can produce work in the "real world" and what that work will look like. I bet your acceptance rate will be much higher in a few years. The most important thing is to just keep making work! :)

3 MFA Photo applicants for Yale (among other places) in these here forums now... good luck to you and @Sylvieee!

I applied for Yale photo too!

  6. Hi Advice4MFA and everyone else!!

I have a BFA in photo (graduated in 2015) and I am now applying for an MFA. My recent work has taken me in this slightly "untraditional" path of photography that I would describe as photo collage (think Charlotte Cotton's "Photography is Magic" for those photographers out there). I am very excited about where this work is going and I got great feedback at the national portfolio review day.

I have come to understand that schools want to see some diversity in a portfolio, as in not 20  images from the same series or body of work. This is where I start to worry a bit. I am afraid that if all my portfolio images are digitally altered in some way that the schools will worry I can't take a good, straight, normal, traditional photograph (which I can). So my question really boils down to this- is it ok to have a portfolio in which all or the majority of all the images are digitally altered in some way?

I never really knew until recently that successful artist's in the contemporary art world worked in this way so I still feel like I'm treading in uncharted territory. Anyone who has some insight on this I would love love love to hear from you! Thanks a ton!

  7. Hey there, I would check out UAlbany. Their program has recently moved to being very interdisciplinary. I spoke with several of the professors there who said you can basically do what ever you want when you get in. That being said you do have to apply through a specific medium. Also, one of the professors there, Adam Frelin, is an installation guy so you might enjoy his work.

UAlbany is not super unique in it's interdisciplinary fashion but the main reason I suggest it is due to the funding. It is a state school so it's very affordable and even more so if you live in NY.  Every student is given a TA position of some sort which includes a stipend and tuition remittance, so about 85% of your costs are covered out right, and it could be even more once you include need based. Downtown Albany is a fun and busy place and it is very easy to get to NYC from there. I hope this is helpful, good luck!

  8. I went to the one in NYC and it was amazing. I am a photographer about two and a half years out of undergrad. I have started working a new way rather recently and I have NO idea if I was on the right track. The review totally opened my eyes and many professors had suggestions of contemporary artist to follow. It also helped me cut some schools off my list which was way too long. Overall it was the best thing I have done in this process so far!
