  1. Hey everyone! I'll be in the MFA program at SU in the fall. The info here has been very helpful but I have a couple more questions! In undergrad I had to find my housing for the next year the spring before. What is the timeline like for Syracuse? Do I need to go visit ASAP and find a place to live before all the good ones go or will I be able to find a place as easily next month? I have spent my fair share of time living with a roommate and would like to get my own place, ideally a one bedroom. Is it possible to find a clean, safe place walking distance from campus for $600 or under? It does not have to be anything fancy! I know of Orange Housing but are there any other good places to look for apartment listings? Any other general advice anyone has would be awesome! I def want something far away from any crazy undergrads Thank you!
  2. UAlbany- it is a state school in NY with a small interdisciplinary program. They offer 40% tuition discount and a stipend that covers the rest of tuition with a little left over. It isn't a well known art school but if you want a Masters degree for free you can get it here.
  3. Fellow photographer here- I would 100% choose Columbia. They have a fantastic photo program and IT"S FREE!! Who can say no to that!?
  4. Super good chance I'm going! Still waiting to hear from a few more places...
  5. Anyone hear anything from NYU?? Specifically photo? I'm just waiting to hear from NYU and Columbia now but I'm getting nervous that there hasn't been anything yet :/
  6. Thank you, I hope so too! The email they sent seemed super chill so I think it should be ok.
  7. @newman and @StarryNight_1 thank you! @John0000 Doug from the photo program at Syracuse University
  8. Would anyone be willing to share some interview questions they have encountered in past years? My first interview is tomorrow! Thanks
  9. Has anyone here had an interview with Hunter before? I am curious what kind of questions they might ask... they said there would be an email on Feb. 22nd about what we need for the interview. I had to sign up for a Skype interview because I am going to be out of the country for the in person interviews!
  10. Throughout my portfolio reviews, tours and meetings professors always asked when I graduated from undergrad (2015). Graduate programs want you to take time off to prove you can make your own work. Many people consider your undergraduate work and thesis as a product of your school. They want to see if you can produce work in the "real world" and what that work will look like. I bet your acceptance rate will be much higher in a few years. The most important thing is to just keep making work!
  11. I would look at NYFA and if you are looking for photo related calls check out SPE These might not all be local but they are great resources!
  12. I applied to Columbia photo as well and have not heard anything yet
  13. Hey everyone! I'm waiting to hear from Hunter, Columbia, NYU, Purchase, UAlbany and Syracuse all for photo. Already got rejected from Yale! Anyone know when these schools might be calling or emailing? Congrats to everyone that got calls/ interviews so far!!

    Statements

Hey everyone! Would anyone who has accepted to grad school be willing to post their statement? It would be insanely helpful to see some examples. Thanks!
  16. Hi Advice4MFA and everyone else!! I have a BFA in photo (graduated in 2015) and I am now applying for an MFA. My recent work has taken me in this slightly "untraditional" path of photography that I would describe as photo collage (think Charlotte Cotton's "Photography is Magic" for those photographers out there). I am very excited about where this work is going and I got great feedback at the national portfolio review day. I have come to understand that schools want to see some diversity in a portfolio, as in not 20 images from the same series or body of work. This is where I start to worry a bit. I am afraid that if all my portfolio images are digitally altered in some way that the schools will worry I can't take a good, straight, normal, traditional photograph (which I can). So my question really boils down to this- is it ok to have a portfolio in which all or the majority of all the images are digitally altered in some way? I never really knew until recently that successful artist's in the contemporary art world worked in this way so I still feel like I'm treading in uncharted territory. Anyone who has some insight on this I would love love love to hear from you! Thanks a ton!
  17. Hey there, I would check out UAlbany. Their program has recently moved to being very interdisciplinary. I spoke with several of the professors there who said you can basically do what ever you want when you get in. That being said you do have to apply through a specific medium. Also, one of the professors there, Adam Frelin, is an installation guy so you might enjoy his work. UAlbany is not super unique in it's interdisciplinary fashion but the main reason I suggest it is due to the funding. It is a state school so it's very affordable and even more so if you live in NY. Every student is given a TA position of some sort which includes a stipend and tuition remittance, so about 85% of your costs are covered out right, and it could be even more once you include need based. Downtown Albany is a fun and busy place and it is very easy to get to NYC from there. I hope this is helpful, good luck!
  18. I went to the one in NYC and it was amazing. I am a photographer about two and a half years out of undergrad. I have started working a new way rather recently and I have NO idea if I was on the right track. The review totally opened my eyes and many professors had suggestions of contemporary artist to follow. It also helped me cut some schools off my list which was way too long. Overall it was the best thing I have done in this process so far!
